Die

Omurqi's avatar
Feb 3, 2010

Die shows the reader a suicide note from a girl to her brother, in which she describes what she thought of her life, who she loved, but most importantly, what drove her from leading a normal life to the end of her road… In short, Die is a deep, psychological One Shot. It's disturbing, and by not being very graphic about it, the power of imagination hits you all the stronger. While it won’t be the most emotional thing you’ll ever read, partly because of the mere 13 pages of content, it’s most definitely worth your time if themes like appeal to you.

The Female Fridge No. 1

Omurqi's avatar
Feb 3, 2010

I’m really unsure what to think of this one. It certainly left some kind of impression on me, a combination of laughter, bore and uneasiness. As anyone would get from reading the site synopsis, the premise is entirely ridiculous. The story starts out pretty funny, with nearly orgasmic and heated descriptions about filling the shelves of the fridge. Soon however, the story takes a turn for the worse when other people start entering the pages. Before long, the initially funny tale turns into a combination of angst and a rather ridiculous horror-fest, one drawn so painfully undetailed that it... See full review

Comedy manga are plentiful. From shounen novels full of funny quirks, to whole series with the sole purpose of making you laugh on for hours. However, never before did a manga succeed at making me laugh out loud from the second page on, all the way to the end at page eight! That’s right; Children Can’t Choose Their Parents for me is a highly successful “boost of laughter”. It’s rather crude and not relatable, but who gives a flying chicken, it’s super short and incredibly funny!

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: Yoko no Obeso-hen

izunadrop510's avatar
Feb 3, 2010

There isn't really much to this manga. Its basically taking all the characters from Gurren Lagann and putting them into a lot of funny situations. Whether it is remembering Kamina, or battling the Anti-Spiral, Yoko no Obeso-hen will probably make you laugh or get really mad. I enjoyed this manga but it lacks the spiral power that Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann delivers. If you know nothing about Gurren Lagann then you would be kinda lost because most of the jokes revolve around the Gurren Lagann universe.

Kandachime

Feb 2, 2010

Kandachime is your typical shounen manga; good fights, a bit of fan service, a hint of romance, weak male protagonist + weird power + gaining strength over time, slightly weak plot development... you know the drill, and with not much to set it apart from any other manga in the genre, it comes a cross as decent, but nonetheless average. The story can feel forced at times, the odd conveniently placed enemy at just the wrong or right time is a little too perfect, though most of the time you won't notice it. Lets just say, this isn't a manga with a massively strong story, though it keeps your interest pretty... See full review

Kashimashi: Girl Meets Girl

Omurqi's avatar
Jan 30, 2010

After having read a couple of gender-bender manga, both good and bad, it seemed like they had, without exception, ecchi written all over them. Bracing myself for another flesh-fest, I was pleasantly surprised by Kashimashi’s focus on non-ecchi comedy and romance, all while keeping the gender change as a solid central theme. Story When Hazumu awakes after a surreal alien-encounter, he finds himself in surprisingly good shape, with one exception: he’s no longer a “he”! After this bizarre event, you follow him around as he tries to cope with his new body and all the effects... See full review

Story: 8.5/10 I’ve always been a bit of a tomboy; as a child I would be in the garden playing with frogs instead of hosting a tea party for my dollies. Now in my mid-twenties, while I no longer try to pet any unwilling amphibian in my path, I am still more likely to be diving headfirst into a sea of shounen goodness rather than weeping my way through romantic dramas. However, one lusciously ladylike love story manages to break through my many boyish layers and tug at my very heartstrings. It’s clear that Emma is something special. The plot revolves around the straightforward premise... See full review

The Godfather of all fantasy manga.  Berserk is considered one of the most enjoyable, mind-expanding, creative pieces of art introduced to the manga world.  There is hardly any analogy I can think of that could compare to its greatness.  Well it’s like Candyland made real or a real money tree growing in your yard.  It's one those things that just takes the words out of your mouth, if you catch my drift.  Alright! I have much to say about Berserk so this review might be a tid-bit lengthy. Story 10/10   Insane!!!  Few manga can compare to the pure imagination... See full review

Although the manga is veeeeeery short, it is still a beautiful and touching classic love story where a boy loves a girl who loves another dreaming boy who has a girlfriend. But, the girl Konno reallises her love was in vain and after the other guy catches a cold and is absent from the part-time job they're both working at, she sudenly realises his affection and decides to give him a chanse. There, I spoiled the end for you. But the whole manga is actually pretty seen-through if you're into these love triangles anyway, so I don't think I gave away that much. Story 7.5/10 Sometimes, the source material really is better than the anime. In the case of Kashimashi: Girl Meets Girl, this statement rings true. As I stated in my review of the anime, this straightfoward gender-bender love-triangle offers both a touching love story, and a feasible look at gender identity (as feasible as a story involving aliens and overnight sex-change could be). Instead of re-hashing my review of the anime, I'll point out why I think the manga does a better job. To put it simply: pacing and plausibility. Where the anime... See full review

She believes Lelouch was killed while walking through the getto of Japan; now called Area 11. The power she is given grants her the ability to see the lines of the future; (as of used in the anime during the last few episodes). Fall in Love Like a Comic was definately one of my favorite [mangaka] based genre. The art was definatly cute, adorable, and over all pleasant to look at. The story was basically the typical plot for a manga based around a slightly overworked mangaka with minimal if any experience in love. However this particular story by far exceeded my expiations. After watching the anime OVA version of Lament of the Lamb a good while ago, I looked a little into it and quickly found out it was actually an adaption of the manga. I read the whole Volume One of Sunshine Sketch, and not once did it make me grin, let alone smile or laugh. Which is a shame because I found the art and the characters to be cute. The characers antics were just stupid and brought out a 'so what?...next' attitude. Sure, in some of them the characer did something silly, but it wasn't  funny. Sugar Princess is drawn slightly different than the mangas I normally read. The main character Maya's face is slightly more rounded than a girls face in a typical shojo. Over all the drawings were different but very pleasing. However the thing that is most entertaining about this manga is that it's about a sport that not many manga's or anime's feature. The story though seems to sorta end like there is going to be a 3rd volume but it's a definite end at 2 volumes :[Recs:Both Sugar Princess(Manga) and Ginban kaleidoscope (Anime & Manga) feature a rare genre in the manga/anime world, figure skating... As a one-shot, Angel Sky isn't given much room in which to develop its characters, but it does a fine job of making you feel for the lead duo, and feel their special bond.  The ending wasn't expected, albeit a bit stereotypical.  I suppose that can't be helped, considering the narrow possiblities.  All in all, it's a good short read sure to delight any romantic-hearted manga lover.

I usually hate anything and everything with an environmental theme (way too preachy), but I thoroughly enjoyed this. It reminded me of Isaac Asimov's "The Last Question", the plot and tone were along the same vein. The art was attractive, especially the couple of full-color pages in the beginning. It's pretty short (one-shot), so there isn't much more I can say, but I recommend it! (Didn't get full marks because the brief chibi-humor felt weird, and I wasn't quite pleased with the ending, but everything else was great)

It's very cute with agnsty males that think about the "he likes me he likes me not" type of stuff but it's still highly entertaining to read and see what happens at the end. Even adds in a cute brother complex that is sure to make shounen-ai fans drool at that thought.

Browsing through a lot of Seinen mangas I stumbled upon Love Roma. Slightly curious about this story I sneaked a peek and almost gave up on reading this. The art is ugly, and that's a downer for a romance (I usually mind it less in battle mangas, since they can get some more points during fighting scenes). I decided that if I have to drop it because of the art,  I'll at least sit through one chapter - that sounded fair. To my suprise, after reading one chapter instead of dropping it I've read whole 5 volumes. Good story managed to overcome the art hurdle. Story - 7.5/10   One day, during a... See full review

The story is of Sebastian Michaelis as he works for his young master; a 12 (to 13) year old boy named Ciel Phantomhive. But their is more to this duo then meets the eye, Sebastian is actually a demon that is under contract to Ciel, working for him until the day that he can claim the boy's soul. (I'm stopping their I do not wish to give much away if one has not read it yet.). The story if very interesting, with side trips of humor, and tradigy flowing through it as the story progresses. It really has one begging for the next chapter to come quickly as soon as it stops. Most shonen manga's I read are just to... See full review

Bitter Virgin

Bitter Virgin, while a fantastic manga, does not leave you with a happy feeling after reading it.  Emotions are heavily involved as you find out Hinako (the female lead)'s past and how Suwa (the male lead), after learning her secret, tries to protect her from her fears. The story itself is fairly original and the characteristics of the characters were fairly realistic.  You could say that if this scenario were to happen in real life, you would expect people to react in the ways that these people did.The art was also pretty good, although nothing too amazing.  Very shoujo-esque, as expected of... Kamichu!

Kamichu! is one of my favorite anime, so I decided to check out the manga version. The manga did a good job of fixing continuity issues from the anime series (the anime came first, I believe), and taking out the stories that I felt were the weakest from the anime. Unfortunately, even though improvements were made in the story, I still preferred the anime, bacause the world and all of the cute spirits are just more charming in color. Also the manga added quite a bit of fanservice-y bits (bath scenes, weird "camera" angles, etc.). I can't figure out how some of those middle school girls got such... See full review

Battle Angel Alita

It's been a while since I've read it as it was my second manga ever read which has been almost 10 years ago or something like that. But what I remember is fantastic characters and their development.Alita herself is my favourite character. Her pure strength and will power that keeps her going to find herself and help others around her is just amazing. Her journey is a interesting one in a cyber punk world with people fighting for survival. The way this manga is drawn it's totally breathtaking. I wish I could draw like that haha. I can't only drool over my thoughts of it in colour. This manga has a movie... See full review

This is a hilarious cute story of revenge. Oddly enough it has a Kill Bill feel to it so if you liked that movie a lot you'll enjoy this read. It has the typical Japanese weirdness to it that definitally adds to the story with some romance thrown in there. Short and sweet you'll be page turning so fast to see what happens!

Mars

This manga has to be one of the best shoujo mangas I have ever read.  In terms of my personal rank, this is definitely number 2 on my list (Skip Beat being number 1 of course ^^).Story: The story of Mars is by far one of the most intricate and complex of which I have ever seen.  You pulled into the world of pain and darkness of the characters but at the same time, you see hope and a will to live and overcome their pasts. I was totally drawn into the story.  Some parts I was giddy with joy while other parts I was ready to cry as my emotions went on a roller coaster ride.Art: Absolutely... See full review

Uzumaki: Spiral into Horror

STORY "A town haunted by a spiral pattern? Really Mr. mangaka? Really? Well alright, I'll read it anyway, if only because it's rated so highly." And really that's the story in a nutshell. Spirals are taking over the town (egad!) in a myriad of ways (oh no!). Soon after picking this up, I had a flshback to the first time I watched Rocky Horror Picture Show. Before watching/reading, I knew next to nothing about either of them, except that they loudly proclaimed to be "horror". And then quickly turned out to be ridiculously campy. Don't get me wrong- it's an entertaining read, it just... See full review
