Best Animes From 2005

I only included the animes I have watched over over these years. I'm not including Sequels when quality declines or when the story started in previous years. I am including Sequels where it makes sense to keep watching, in order to complete the story.
1 Noein: To Your Other Self

Noein: To Your Other Self

This is an excellent show for sci-fi fans and brainiacs, although I think anyone can enjoy the show and everything will eventually make sense, as its well explained with examples through the story.

'Noein makes use of several interpretations of quantum physics, particularly Hugh Everett's Many-Worlds Interpretation, which views the universe as branching off into an infinity of possible states of varying probability. It also draws from the Copenhagen Interpretation, which suggests that an observer or measurement is important in determining the decoherency of the probability.' -Wikipedia

In addition to the interesting plot and setting, there are also lots of action and fights, with interesting character designs for the enemies and even slice of life moments.

The dub is good.

2 Basilisk

Basilisk

Few things are as brutal as a Ninja War, as they'll use anything to destroy their enemies, including deceit. These fights are not just physical, but psychological as well. And the line between good and bad is blurred for both sides, where does the real enemy lie?

There is a lot to say about this anime with excellent graphics and even romance between the brutality of war.

Don't miss this anime, unless you really despise gore and violence. This is not for the faint of heart, your mental state will not survive!

The dub is ok.

3 Blood+

Blood+

One of the best things about this anime is perhaps, that the plot is always moving forward, passing through many settings and challenges, keeping the story fresh, despite the length of the anime.

'...Blood+ still retains its distinction from other anime titles for being extraordinary. It is a fantastic drama that has more ups and downs than you could ever imagine... it is a serious show from beginning to end' -Swimmer64

The dub is good.

4 Black Cat

Black Cat

This is a fun action anime with some serious notes at the beginning of the story and a theme of 'taking control of your life' with the help of your friends.

'Black Cat is a unique Shounen anime that seems to have found a way to display action without pushing it over the limit. It's this that has made Black Cat one of my favorites. If you are looking for uniqueness, drama, and action all-in-one, this anime is for you.' -fononhaze

'The storyline is unique and nothing I have ever seen before (FACT). I loved how it all started and although at first I was a little hesitant my friend advised me that IT WILL GET WAY BETTER. It did get way better, I mean REALLY better SO good that I got hooked and watched the last half of the anime in like 1-2days :D.' -TallyCrow

The dub is good.

5 Speed Grapher

Speed Grapher

This anime has an original setting, if not an original plot, including sci-fi elements and maybe not so welcome sadomasochism fetiches, as the protagonist is investigating this kind of club.

'Surprisingly I never would have thought they could pull off ANY anime with a photographer and camera as the main character, but they did. Its a hell of a note to, action-packed, mass ecchi, and a ridiculous yet compelling story of a retired war photographer who meets a young girl...

Overall the anime is something that took me awhile to get to, but when I finally did I had to tell the world about it.  Its very well written plot with plenty of non-stop chase action, superpowers, corrupt govt, and explicit content to keep any person amused for 24 eps.  With all that said and done, it's an anime for the brave, its an anime for those who can't get enough of that dark underground atmosphere that we call society.' -TheMajor5

Except for the female main protagonist, the dub is pretty good.

6 Eureka Seven

Eureka Seven

This anime is not perfect, but it does shine on its good parts! On one side, the pacing is one of its flaws, with some episodes feeling as 'fillers' and a mixture of genres & themes that are well balanced through the story on its good side.

'One of the most prevalent themes in the series is racial and religious tolerance and harmony, which is carried throughout the characters' relationships as well as the series' conflicts. Some of the other more global themes that the series covers consist of issues such as allegories of real-world conflicts and wars, current political climates from Japan and abroad, depictions of various subcultures and related musical movements that span several generations, and ties to environmental movements. The series also covers other more personal themes such as parenting and family' -Fandom

The dub is good.

7 Solty Rei

Solty Rei

This anime starts slow, you can completely skip episode 5, which is more of a filler, but after that, the story keeps getting more and more interesting with the emergence of more sci-fi elements as it progresses.

'I was pleasantly surprised by the way Solty Rei turned out. At first, it seemed like it was going to be a typical Android/bounty hunter procedural... but still the series proved to be a top-notch show that found a way to continue to rise till the very end and not peak somewhere in the middle.

I'm glad I took the time to watch Solty Rei despite it being hidden in categories that are packed with much more successful and touted shows. Its appearance may seem a bit kiddy at first, but the story is really worth your time, as it's very well thought out and is filled with twist and turns. One of the best parts of the show is it doesn't treat its viewers like idiots, it makes you think and is filled with moments of real gut-wrenching plot. It has it's few flaws with forgotten plot points and incomplete characters, but it's easily overlooked as the story and writing are very well done.' -Rbastid

The dub is good.

8 Mushishi

Mushishi

Very few series are as original as Mushishi, almost creating its own genre and in an episodic format, which is usually disliked to tell a story, but in this case, it turns out the perfect medium.

This show is immersive both visually and musically, as the sounds and music play an important role in the stories. The stories itself are mind-blowing and an open invitation to creativity and imagination. More than a show is an experience, that you should try for yourself.

'...for one thing, Mushishi is completely different from anything else that I've seen, anime or otherwise. Everything about the show, from its leisurely pace to its beautiful animation, seems to be on a separate wavelength from just about anything else out there.' -vivafruit

'Amazing anime for the soul, the atmosphere is amazing and there are a lot of meaningful stories within each episode.' -Teka123

The dub is great!

9 Mushishi: Hihamukage

14 One Piece Movie 6: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island

One Piece Movie 6: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island

This is a great One Piece movie that does not quite stick to the formula. First is set apart with a distinctive art style with creative camera angles and a bright color palette and then, while the movie starts full of comedy it becomes much darker, with the main theme of What Luffy would do if he suddenly loses all of his Nakama (friends)? The story is similar to the Davy Back Fight, only that the setting is darker, and the events bigger.

"...unlike the previous movies, this is by far the darkest, saddest, scariest, and most psychological of them all. It is also the most unorthodox of all the movies, as it was quite different from the overall feeling of the main series...

Another thing is the animation style which is quite artsy most of the time. During the peaceful moments it looks cheery and normal with rather a minimal shading and fluent animation, but during the dangerous scenes it changes to this gritty, colorless, rough outline style, which is quite creepy and unorthodox." -roriconfan

"This has to be my most favorite One Piece movie. I would never have thought that such a lighthearted and friendly anime/manga could be depicted as so creepy and chilling. Well, this movie proved it can be done." -eeveepkmnfan

This anime deserves a Dub!

15 The Old Crocodile

The Old Crocodile

With beautiful minimalistic ink strokes and great use of silhouettes, this short dark story is mesmerizing in its art and storytelling.

16 Pale Cocoon

Pale Cocoon

This is a good short about the importance of knowing our history to understand where we are at today, but with a sci-fi setting, which makes the story all the more interesting.

'Science fiction is hard to execute, and is doubly demanding when in short story format. Science fiction is about creating a world and breathing life into it, and in twenty three minutes, Pale Cocoon manages a smashing success at that. Breaking it down to the elements that make it work is silly. What really matters is that in a short period of time, there is immense impact, and a ride that manages to convey both darkness and wonder, through the eyes of people who want to dream in a reality where dreams have no chance of fruition.' -Gzerble

17 Akagi

Akagi

Despite its abrupt, incomplete ending, this is a great anime you don't want to miss if you like gambling and people who live on the edge.

'Truly, Akagi is a fascinating, overwhelming character. He is born with natural talent and senses for gambling, he is smart, he is a fantastic strategist, but those aren't his greatest attributes. First, he is depicted as a devil in human form. He is amoral, shady; one cannot guess if he is good or bad. Second, he is fearless. Even though he respects himself and what he can do, he does not feel fear, nor does he care about his life. In addition to this, what makes him so intimidating is how he actually plays Mahjong. He is described as having godly senses; Akagi never makes mistakes. But what's actually terrifying are his psychological games with his opponents. His observational skills are divine, he learns so much information about one person through a single move. He analyzes this data, and manages to manipulate his enemies without them even noticing.' -fallenangel97

This anime deserves a Dub!

It also desperately needs a continuation, as the story is just cut in the middle of the last battle!

18 Eyeshield 21

Eyeshield 21

This is a good sports anime with great character development and a good balance of comedy and action. Very few fillers in between matches and every player get its own time to shine. Attitude, determination, self-confidence and talent vs. effort; are some of the themes of the story.

This anime deserves a Dub!

19 Glass Mask (2005)

Glass Mask (2005)

One of the few animes with acting as the main theme. The story is designed to get you interested in acting and even implanting some lessons through the story and the rivalry of the characters.

Although this is a remake of the 1984 anime, many reviews place this version as the better one. The manga story is still ongoing, so I should mention this series does not have an actual ending yet.

This anime deserves a Dub!

20 Guyver: The Bioboosted Armor (2005)

Guyver: The Bioboosted Armor (2005)

This remake is a closer adaptation of the first 10 volumes of the manga, which is to this day, still ongoing. But since it started in 1985, this anime still has some elements that seem a little old, both in the design of the monsters and the characters personalities. Even so, the animation itself is good and the story is superb, especially in the way it develops challenging situations that really put the heroes with their back against the wall. Also, the sci-fi elements and the mythology of the story is pretty unique and was really ahead of its time.

'...I must say that it far surpassed my expectations... The storyline was not lacking, everything played into something more.  The characters stayed true to their actions.  Meaning there were no characters changing their personality to fit the story.  There is something for everyone, from blood and gore to action, drama, suspense, mystery, and a small play on romance.' -splight

The dub is ok, not great.

21 Steamboy

Steamboy

Directed and co-written by Katsuhiro Otomo, author of Akira

'The story isn't the greatest, but there's an abundance of sci-fi eye candy to compensate.' -Rotten Tomatoes

22 Capeta

Capeta

This is a good sports anime if you like racing, it follows a typical sports story with a kart racing setting, which is what sets it apart (Which kid wouldn't like to drive those fast little karts?). It has likable characters and an easy-going feel aimed at younger audiences. One of the topics of the story is that money is not an impediment to follow your dreams and do what you want.

The story is divided into different arcs that follow the development of the protagonist from childhood to adulthood, exposing all the struggles he faces in order to advance to the next step in his career.

'The best part was the story!  Instead of the usual battle against other competitors, Capeta's real battle was with poverty.  Since the beginning, Capeta's biggest challenge was trying to earn enough money to compete in races.  For me, and also for a lot of others I'm sure, it was an aspect of Capeta that was very easy to relate to.  Watching him struggle against it and not give up was inspirational.  Again and again, Capeta triumphed against it and found other ways to race.' -happicat

'I've been a sports anime fan for nearly two years now and I cannot believe I never gave Capeta a try before now ... I'm so ashamed of myself! I honestly didn't think much of it from reading the description or from the screen shots I saw but they really don't do the anime justice! This was a fantastic anime! What a rush! I had the time of my life! Wish they do another season one of these days so I can see Capeta and Naomi race each other in Formula 1 cars! That'd make my day!...' -duchessliz

This anime deserves a Dub!

23 Karas

Karas

This may not be for everyone, and it will be appreciated by those who like action, violence, and supernatural themes (with Japanese mythology).

'In general though, the story and the way the story was laid out was fantastic. It shifts from character to character, scene to scene, in a fluid manner. Rarely do I feel so immersed in an anime world; Tokyo Godfathers was another movie that was designed and executed so well that you felt like you were watching a real movie, not something animated. If you are looking for a violent, badass and dark story, you can’t go wrong with Karas....the animation in Karas is freaking gorgeous. If I had to choose my top 3 impressive anime, visually, Karas would hands down be one of them...

Overall Karas is an absolute treat to watch. I came into it expecting nothing and left highly satisfied. The dark, violent and gorgeous nature of Karas make it a perfect recommendation for fans of Batman Begins... All in all this is probably one of my favorites now, and rarely do I score anything this high. I’d recommend Karas to almost everyone... well, except those out there who only like magical girl or ecchi series. Otherwise, for a wonderfully dark and violent masterpiece, check out Karas immediately.' -sothis

'My biggest complaint is that Karas feels very sporadic initially. Karas is an anime that prefers to show rather than tell. There is little dialogue, so viewers need to piece the parts together themselves as the series goes on. This is fine, however, the first couple of episodes just throw random-ish scenes and snippets of dialogue at you. It's not until the midway through that things start to make some sense.

Thankfully, everything is explained in due time. The series leads to its conclusion quite nicely and with all questions answered. Karas manages to do this without resorting to drawn out, lecturing dialogue.' -quacker

The dub is ok.

24 Peach Girl

Peach Girl

'This show has a lot of mature themes such as suicide, rape, depression, bullying, etc. This really sets it apart... The characters feel more alive and real because of their flaws.' -xenokitten

'Peach girl does drama well... It makes you hate/loathe the main 'villain' who without fail each and every episode does everything in her power to interfere with Momo's happiness...

The story has hot button issues too like rape, teen pregnancy, abuse, teen-suicide, and peer pressure. While it might seem like a cute little love story on the surface, it actually has some heavy topics.' -whiteneko

The author tries to exemplify different relationship pitfalls through the story and how some people can try to get in between. I have not seen any other show that does that up to this year at least.

25 The Snow Queen

The Snow Queen

This show is a hidden gem. Although the animation looks like it belongs to the 1970s, with lots of still frames panned on the screen, the story and stories within the stories still comes through and are based on the works of Hans Christian Andersen author of fairy tales including 'The Emperor's New Clothes', 'The Little Mermaid', 'The Nightingale', 'The Snow Queen', 'The Ugly Duckling', 'Thumbelina', and many others.

The character's personalities shine on these stories, especially Gerda, but secondary characters are also unforgettable, like The Little Match Girl.

This anime deserves a Dub!

26 Hotori: Tada Saiwai wo Koinegau

Hotori: Tada Saiwai wo Koinegau

'For only 40 minutes, this anime packs a punch.  It didn't have much time to get its message across - and it definitely could've dived into some deeper subjects that happen later on - but it is definitely a short film worth watching.  After all, it's only 40 minutes and it won't be a waste of your time whatsoever.' -jypsyjulia

27 Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children

This is a good 3d movie, but the type you'll either watch just for the action, since to completely understand the story and who is who, you'll need to have played the video game first. Even so, everyone can enjoy the action!

28 Xenosaga

Xenosaga

This one is not perfect, but its a good anime for sci-fi fans, if not for fans of the game, as it seems most of the criticism is due to a compressed story with less detail than the games. Having not played the games myself prior to watching this anime, I can say I enjoy it and didn't feel anything missing to understand the plot, as it often happens with animes like this.

29 Worku

Worku

This is a good short about a traveling man that is looking for a better place to live. Similar concept to Kino's Journey.
