PSYCHO-PASS: Providence

Dec 16, 2023

Psycho-Pass - Watching Guide Providence is the prequel movie of Psycho-Pass 3.  It is the final movie project in the series and will provide a continuation of the previous season's storyline. This movie is ok, just average, the major problem is the lack of tension in the story. While we see a lot of people get killed, most are masked soldiers and unknown characters. There is no buildup to the... See full review

The latest movie from Science SARU, plagued with their usual crazy antics & iconic animation style bursting with imagination. Is perhaps an unofficial sequel to The Heike Story, and is created by the same author and directed by Masaaki Yuasa. Although... See full review

Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs

Mar 18, 2023

This was a surprising find, an excellent kids' movie with a nice message about not judging people by their appearances, think something similar to Shallow Hall. The movie is also a parody of several classic Fairy Tales, similar to Shrek in that sense and mood. And although all of this has been done before, the execution of this movie is very good with ... Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun

Dec 19, 2022

This season has received some bad reviews, but as I read through them, the majority are about people who didn't like some characters or were hung up on the disgusting parts of the story, unable to move past them. But made no mention of what the story was trying to say and how good it was at conveying the message.  So let me be clear, this is a thinker's anime, if you only care about being entertained, then this show is NOT for you! You'll be better off watching... See full review

This is a good story, which prompts us to think by ourselves and question why we do things in a certain way, rather than just follow orders blindly. It also warns us not to follow people by their glorified status, but rather pay attention to their actions and always seek the truth. Bare in mind that this is a Donghua (Chinese Animation), and as such, this follows Asian culture and beliefs. It will be helpful to know a little about ... See full review

Smile Down the Runway

Sep 30, 2022

What's special about this anime is the Fashion Industry setting. Having said that, working conditions and the environment still use the old classic cliche from the Fashion Industry about how rude they are to treat each other, full of tantrum prima-donnas. I'm not involved in the fashion industry, nor do I know much about it, and the last thing I saw related to fashion was The Devil Wears Prada from 2006; so I'm not sure how accurate is this for the current state of the industry, but it seems absurd for... Ranking of Kings

Sep 20, 2022

In the beginning, this anime uses as a base many elements & structures from classic fairy tales like Snow White & Cinderella, but it has enough variation to create its own story in its own right; and will keep surprising you with the plot twists and how these elements are utilized through the story. This is a story with something to say, mainly "You shouldn't judge a book by its cover"; this theme runs throughout the anime putting your own preconceptions to test. If you are too quick to judge a character then you'll be probably wrong to do so without all the facts and getting to know... See full review

The Girl From the Other Side: Siuil, a Run (2022)

Aug 13, 2022

A perfect example of what anime as a medium does best; visual storytelling that is capable of manifesting the imagination into our reality. In this case, creating a dreamlike world (or perhaps recreating the mystic memories of a distant past). And does this, through the use of different art styles, colors & contrast, that help convey the emotions that the story is telling at each point of time. The story is simple but very good, it may be a little hard to understand if you don't pay attention to the details (in which case I rather recommend you watch this a second time). There is a lot of... See full review

Blade of the Immortal (2019)

Mar 25, 2022

At the moment of this writing, this anime is seriously underappreciated on the rankings of this site! Probably didn't reach the right audience due to the level of violence, realistic approach & vulgar language; and yes, if you are squeamish about that then this anime is not for you. Nevertheless, this is a masterpiece! Despite the supernatural elements, this anime feels extremely realistic, although I'm not sure how much historically accurate it is? It really feels like a window to an era of the past when the law barely protected the people and justice needed to be carried out by your own hand... See full review

Wish Dragon

Oct 5, 2021

This was a surprisingly good movie for the whole family. The story is pretty average adapting from Aladin in a Chinese setting but there is enough variation to keep you entertained. And while the story is just the latest iteration of a classic tale making a little predictable, everything is executed really well and that is what brings this movie to life. I enjoy many of the changes like the addition of martial arts and mythology, is a good twist that sets it apart of so many variations of the Aladin tale. The characters, the comedy, the excellent 3d animation, and especially the music work... See full review

This is a decent Cultivation Donghua. These types of shows are pretty standard with the story, just about becoming more powerful and outsmarting your opponents, even if you have to use deceit to get an advantage. What makes this show stand out from the rest is the use of strategies & tactics, which most of the other shows lacks.  If you don't like Cultivation Fantasies, then this is not for you. If you are not familiar with the concept then I recommend you watch something like ... See full review

Astra Lost in Space

This is an excellent adventure and as you would expect, you get to explore different planets in each episode. They really added a lot of details for each world going as far as to explain how different ecosystems work (or could work in other planets). All this detail helps to bring the different worlds alive. However, the exploration of these worlds and the adventure itself are not the only aspects that make this a good show. This is also a story with many ... See full review

This is a Tom & Jerry type of show but with only the characters and some objects being animated over the "real-life footage". Just like the majority of the reviews say, this Donghua (Chinese Animation) is much better than expected and not the generic story that you could expect from the first episodes. The show starts episodic but beginning with Episode 3, the cases they investigate take 3-4 episodes (see the note below for the special), finally revealing that there is a main storyline that ties everything you have watched. This is not a review but rather an advice: Watch Between Episodes 2 & 3. This is advertised as Episode 5.5 as I assume that was the order it was released between Episodes 5 & 6, but this story couldn't possibly happen at that point in time, so I recommend you watch between Episodes 2 & 3 where it fits better chronologically and also because the story on Episode 6 continues immediately after Episode 5, so it makes sense to watch that way. This story will be referenced again in Episode 6.

The Promised Neverland 2nd Season

Apr 18, 2021

I was very excited about this season. I haven't read the manga, so for me, the story was good for the first 4-5 episodes until one of the main characters re-appear. I think that could have been handled better. From there on, everything feels rushed, characters went "out of character" and I had this feeling that they just wanted to reach the finish line. Then I read that: "Season One of the anime series substantially follows the manga and covers the the story up to Chapter 34 where the children escape from Grace Field House. Season Two is an abbreviated version of events which take... See full review

This is a good sports anime. It has a typical sports story with a tiny but talented protagonist competing in a sport that favors tall people, and their team is made of students that more closely resemble ex-convicts rather than high-schoolers. The story & setting makes it very similar to Kuroko's Basketball, but while Kuroko's Basketball starts realistic and then every player develops a superpower changing the focus of the story from sports to a fantasy ... The Rising of the Shield Hero

Mar 26, 2021

This is a Fantasy Isekai that blurs the line between light & dark. It is light because it maintains a light-hearted mood and the characters are rarely under imminent danger, but it's dark because it contains mature themes including controversial issues like slavery, defamation, alienation & psychological abuse. I think this is one of the best-executed animes in these genres. Despite having all of the common tropes, some are... See full review

In/Spectre

Feb 14, 2021

I have mentioned this several times in my reviews, in a work of fiction (especially sci-fi & supernatural), a lot of times what is important is what you "read between the lines" and the analogies you can make to the real-world! If you are just watching this show expecting to be about action, human vs. monsters, comedy, or romance; then you'll be disappointed.  For me at least, the great thing about this story is the magnificent examples it provides regarding how the media can manipulate the truth of an event and fabricate details that are logical but a complete lie. It shows... See full review

Kokkoku: Moment by Moment

Jan 28, 2021

This is by far one of the most underrated and underappreciated animes of the last few years. Most complaints are from people who didn't understood the plot, but if you are paying attention to the story then you'll be able to figure out everything important. Innovation, when it's too out of the box, often pays the price of being quickly discarded for not conforming to the norm, perhaps because there is nothing to compare to. It happened to Van Gogh, Monet, ... See full review

This is primarily a Psychological show, where the protagonists' use their powers to get into the minds of other people. Similar concept to Inception, but not exactly like that, as the rules are different. This is not explained very well at the beginning, which makes the story quite confusing and hard to figure out what's going on, but if you stick to the end everything will be explained in full. Dec 18, 2020

This was a surprisingly good anime and one of the best Donghuas (Chinese Animation) stories that I have seen so far. The story is really divided into 2 timelines about the same characters, one in the present and one from the past that tells their backstory. They alternate from episode to episode beginning in the present in Episode 1 then to the past in Episode 2 and so on. This anime started great and it was on its way to awesomeness until the last case, at which point it just comes tumbling down to hell and left me wondering if someone was up to sabotage the story and I can't understand why they decided to throw everything away and stomp on their own work as a piece of trash. The series' story is divided into small arcs called "Cases": Case 1: Los Angeles Connection is Episodes 1-5 Case 2: Singapore Sky is Episodes 6-10 Case 3: Snow of London is Episodes 11-14 Up to here, everything is almost perfect. Children of the Sea

Oct 12, 2020

This is a surrealist film with incredible graphics and artistry, even the movement of the characters serves to portray that surrealist feeling. It's also a very subjective film and as such, open to different interpretations depending on your point of view and what catches your attention. So if you don't like those types of films then you may be better moving into something more "conventional", although you'll miss some incredible graphics. Chines Animation has come a long way, especially when it comes to movies. This is a good slice-of-life, but it will mostly appeal to people who love that genre. I'm not fond of it myself, but I still found it a good movie thanks to the animation alone, which is outstanding. It reminded me of The Garden of Words, although is not at that level of quality yet, however, considering the lower budget, I can only praise the animators for this quality work. They blend 3d... Saint Seiya: Saintia Shou

Sep 17, 2020

This show is ridiculously bad! So bad that perhaps it's good for the laughs! Honestly, I'm not sure how to rate this show, it completely misses the mark so much that it just becomes hilarious!  It works well as a parody, except that is clear there are no comedy tags and the creators were totally serious about the plot and mood of the show, but it's a parody all right!
