Tower of Druaga: the Aegis of Uruk

Jan 28, 2024

Really enjoyed Aegis of Uruk. The story was slightly above average but the music was great and I loved the characters. They were fun, they all interacted with each other, and had a unique background that you see manifest in their behaviors. Very seldom do I see an anime with an ensemble cast that all have depth and are are all so enjoyable. Looking forward to the next one.

Eden of the East

Oct 21, 2023

Damn. This is good. It is not often you get to see a story with a protagonist like this. I'm not a literary major. But I know there are certain archetypes, that though we couldn't name, we recognize when we watch anime. Naruto, Goku, D. Luffy etc., are heroes in the mystical/legendary sense. They achieve great things and are generally singularly oriented toward a specific goal, and they happen to be nice guys. But these characters don't necessarilly think through the ramifications of their decisions, they just run through walls (and I do enjoy these characters). The protgatonist in Eden of the East is... Wicked City

Oct 16, 2023

This was made in 1987. Let's point this out straight off. Also, I can't believe this was made in 1987! 80% of the reviews say Wicked City is bad. I can confidently say that it's not bad. Is it good? No. It's not good. However I suspect that this is colored by what I've seen growing up way later than when this movie was made. I can see how this would be a pushing-the-envelope piece in its day. I'm curious about how it was received back then. It's borderline pornographic and the violence is tremendous even by today's standards. The story was decent. Don't feel like I wasted my time... See full review

Overlord IV

Oct 15, 2023

Disappointed. That's the word I'd say most accurately describes how it feels finishing this fourth season. I watched through twice just to be sure because most of the other reviews are positive about this season. Even saw one review that said this is the best season yet. Just not feeling it. What's worse is the next chapter doesn't come out for another two-ish years. Bummer. So it's fair to say that Overlord IV started out pretty good. Ains is posed the question: What kind of king do you want to be? And for two and a half episodes we get to see what kind of king Ains might be. He goes off on his own for a... See full review

Attack on Titan The Final Season: Part II

Apr 28, 2023

SPOLIER WARNING: I don't get it. I just don't. There is no way anyone can convince me that this was the intended plan when this story started 10+ years ago. The path that Eren takes makes no sense when you look at who the character was through most of the series. First I dislike Eren because he seems like such a crybaby, and then when he seems to have finally grown up, he dismisses any empathy for his family (the ones he grew up with) out of nowhere, and acts irrationally. He starts acting completely out of character. Not only that, we are supposed to believe that all this was destined and that future Eren... See full review

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders

Sep 28, 2022

This review covers JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (2012) and Stardust Crusaders. Sorry. This show is lame. Having said that, I understand that I am the outlier. Everyone seems to love this series. Was very excited to watch JoJo, especially after noticing that it was the first ever positive review I'd seen by ThatAnimeSnob (https://www.anime-planet.com/users/ThatAnimeSnob). Now I'm fully convinced he's just a troll. OK. That all aside, why I can't stand it: It's not the levity, it's not the goofiness of it that bothers me. Usually those things make a series better. It's the episodic nature of this series that... See full review

SPY x FAMILY

Aug 6, 2022

Truly a wonderful story. There is so much I liked about it; not quite sure where to start. While the protagonist may be the spy Twilight, the one that steals the show is his daugher Anya. Anya presents the adult world through the innocent eyes of someone not yet affected by its harsh realities. Even in the prep school she attends where the headmasters want to prepare its students to take on the world and consequently, must be more adult-like, Anya stands in stark contrast to what adults view as important. Anya highlights how cruel humans can be towards one another because of spite, jealousy, greed, rivalry... See full review

Kill La Kill

Jul 30, 2022

Started this show years ago...and I stalled out. I don't know what it was. Maybe I was in an Anime hangover. But I am so glad I picked it back up. This story is nonsensical. But the animation and colors are splendid. The levity it brings is something sorely needed today when you just want to check out and laugh. I love it.

Fairy gone: Part II

Mar 27, 2022

This review covers all 24 episodes. This is a mostly spoiler free review, but does touch on some things that are revealed later in the story: WARNING THIS REVIEW CONTAINS minor SPOILERS.   Not since Chaos Dragon have I watched this poor a story (I may go change my rating of Chaos Dragon just so that I can rate Fairy Gone lower than that series).  In short, it's the definition of poor story-telling with even poorer characters. Was determined to drop this series after episode eight (and was ready to drop it even earlier). But sometimes one has to stay the course to... See full review

Black Cat

Mar 24, 2022

A story that seems reasonable... But, I can't. I just can't. Stuck it out to the end just because I thought there has to be something more. Most of the reviews seemed good. This is presumably an assassin's redemption story. Except, from the start there is no moral ambiguity. The assasin just decided they weren't going to kill anymore. So this is really a 20+ episode story about an assassin that is pure of heart and genuinely concerned for the lives of his fellow mankind (while simultaneously uninterested in anybody...like a cat). There you go. That's it. And the main character is never... See full review

A Certain Magical Index

Nov 26, 2021

Listen: I'm all for quirky harem light episodes. But this got a bit tired. It introduces itself seriously, but seems to lose sight of whatever the original story was...almost is if it didn't know where it was going to begin with. Characters are cast aside chronologically as new entrants take the screen, relegated to the intro and outro sequence and sparce comedic asides. Started out interesting and quickly faded away.

Ping Pong The Animation

Mar 21, 2020

In short: I love it. The animation is brilliant. Animation goes a long way; but the animation wasn't a vehicle, it WAS a piece of the story. The characters have depth. The characters evolve. I love it.

Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom

Jan 11, 2020

This sucked me in right quick. Absolutely love the characters. The story reminded me of The Professional, but that didn't matter. The only gripe I might have, is that it went one story arc too long. But even the "Finale" was entertaining. Recommend it.

Tokyo Ghoul:re 2nd Season

Nov 17, 2019

As a fan of this series, I was not prepared for the beginning of the 2nd Season of RE. It blew me away. This was as close to unexpected and aluring as Season One of TG...at first. Somewhere along the way I couldn't remember who was who and what their individual objectives were. I stopped caring about the characters because it all seemed so rushed and jam-packed. The abiliities and scaling were so convoluted it felt like I was watching Dragon Ball GT. I'm over it. Finished it to see the story through. That's it. I love the orginal characters but this was too much too fast and it felt like we are missing... See full review

Saga of Tanya the Evil

Feb 4, 2019

This was a fine, short romp. The Main's moral ambiguity and maniacal desire for revenge against Being X juxtaposed with the desire to stay away from The Front was fun. Was particularly pleased w/the animation of the aerial battles and with the music.

Amagami SS

Feb 1, 2019

Amagami SS was one of the toughest series I've kinda almost really liked but could not wait for the story to be over. The protagonist is heartbroken after a Christmas break-up. The story begins from this break-up and takes on a Groundhog Day-like series of what might have happened next. The slow development between the broken-hearted main and his might-be future soul mates is wonderfully crafted to portray how true companionship/love comes to be. It's a mostly serious story with the right amount of playful, yet awkward situations. However, by about the fourth "reset" of that... See full review

Highschool of the Dead

Jan 25, 2019

HS of the Dead: This was a casual/random watch. Was not recommended; just came across it and had zero expectations. Plot? It's just another zombie story and has been done before. You could draw direct lines from any zombie book, movie and say "this seems very familiar." BUT, this was still fun! This is harem, but makes sense why it is. This is fan service, but not just because...it is applied appropriately. And finally, even in a 12-episode arc, the characters are loveable.

Nura: Rise of the Youkai Clan - Demon Capital

Sep 13, 2018

Gave this 2.5 stars, but it was a strong 2.5. The story is about average and the characters were meh. But I really enjoyed the sound effects (sometimes distorded and dischordant) and the music. The characters were drawn exceptionally well and the locations were beautiful. I had a hard time ripping my eyes away from this one.

Saiyuki Reload Blast

May 18, 2018

Where to start...admittedly I feel as though I should wait to write a review for this. Just finished watching not more than two minutes ago and have not yet sat to reprocess the series. But I can't wait. First off, I knew nothing about Saiyuki prior to watching, and hadn't realized that this is a long running manga & anime. Second, since I've never read the manga, nor watched the prior anime, my take will probably differ from dedicated fans (please forgive). Alright, (get to the point already)... this WAS AWESOME! After slogging through countless of semi-entertaining, assembly line, same... See full review

Nabari no Ou

May 17, 2018

Nobari no Ou was good. The story was well done. One could see similarities between this show and others, but that goes for many a series. Nabari no Ou opens up hot, then cools down, warms , and chills. It has a good combination of human drama and folklore, with little dashings of action. The animation is both gritty and light. I could watch this again.

The Familiar of Zero

May 13, 2018

Zero no Tsukaima...it is not good. From less than ten minutes into the first episode, I knew this was going to be bad. The scenes seemed forced, almost as if cramped for time. There are weird transitions from scene to scene, almost as if the producers decided on using the powerpoint "transitions" feature for...for...for what I can't possibly imagine. I'd not yet seen something so ridiculous. Consquently, I could not stop watching. And then about six episodes in, I fell in love with the characters, and the typical archetypes, and repitive gags. This is likely because my brain was turned to mush by... See full review

May 7, 2018

Honestly, this was a straightforward good little romp. Having read the reviews on Aoharu x Machinegun prior to watching it, was prepared to be disappointed. However, I don't know what's not to like. If one watched anime for music, one might critique that (and I suppose I just did). But, I don't. This was fun. This was different. And it's worth watching.

Log Horizon

Nov 25, 2017

This was an unexpectedly terrific series. This is a unique take on what reality is, and how we can either shape or be shaped by it. Log Horizon brought a nice blend of comedy and seriousness. And while the show is always bringing in new characters, it does so in way that keeps the story fresh, and we never forget who the story's central figures are. Great stuff.
