The Snow Queen

Dec 29, 2023

Endearing, a moving re-telling of the timeless classic. I have always adored the spiritual devoted love story at the heart of "The Snow Queen" and this anime captures and represents it beautifully. Even with the inclusion of notable fairytale characters from other recognizable childhood stories, the series still exudes the exquisite and encouraging aura of this Coming of Age adventure-and the unbreakable power of true love. The screen and character writing are richly done and the traditional animation style truly makes this a hidden gem viewers of all ages can appreciate and be touched by... See full review

Trigun Stampede

Dec 29, 2023

Breathtaking, movingly written, and sweeping reimagining of the epic story. As a fan of the original series, I was very intrigued to see this along with the new characters, plot lines, and other elements included in this version. While the CGI anime style differs from the traditional 2D in the first series, it is nevertheless visually enveloping and awesome to immerse yourself in. The well-rounded complexities of every character was richly conveyed and touched me just as deeply as in the first anime adaptation, albeit on a deeper level. Though not as comical as the former, it has a lot of heart and feels to... See full review

Shenmue the Animation

Dec 27, 2023

A pulse-pounding and deeply in depth anime version of the amazing video game series! The style is fantastically smooth and retains the drama and internally-driven grit of the original storyline. The characters were just as intriguing, rich, and complex as in the games and I was very pleased how they were written in the series, really made them all the more interesting. Both emotional and spiritually engrossing aesthetic with an intriguing air of mystery that makes Heroic Journey stories such as this one so resonant.  A shame it was not renewed for a second season, I really was eager to see the story... Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

Jul 7, 2022

Probably one of the best anime of it's category if not the best. Gorō Taniguchi is an amazing director and you clearly can see how much heart and brain he puts into this series. Engaging story, hero's journey and conflict of ideals is top of the tops, complex and well developed characters, epic crazy action that tries to simulate real life politics and physics as much as tech allows it... this anime is one that reflects themes and subjects prevalent through human history that I for certain will be watching it over and over again. This anime undoubtedly is a gem on par with previous mecha/war-themed... See full review

School Days: Magical Heart Kokoro-chan

Jul 6, 2022

Ridiculously funny while mocking classic superhero teams, kanji and zombie cinema. I honestly preferred this OVA more than Valentine's Day and the main anime series as the central characters actually come off as more relatable, funny, and easy to like (except for Sekai personally to an extent). The original series would have been a lot better in terms of the characters had it portrayed them in the light of this OVA- Makoto Itou was more likable in this for sure. Katsura I loved as Magical Word and would loved for her to have had the same outgoing and brave persona in the main series as her alter ego. The... See full review

Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar

Jul 4, 2022

Thrillingly entertaining, over-the-top, lewdly funny, mecha epic... and no doubt one of my favorite titles in the Tenchi Muyo franchise. While it is a stretch apart from previous series, I loved how there were subtle references to the original story despite the absence of characters we all know and love, it still retained the overt sexual humor and charm its known for. Also enjoyed this one as it had a more serious tone in contrast to the preceding series and while a number of the female protagonists were to an extent infuriating and annoying, they did have their redeeming qualities and helped... Prison School

Jul 2, 2022

One of the most shockingly lewd, thrilling and mentally-twisting anime I have seen to date. Hardcore, perversely hilarious and psychologically trying. The trials the five guys go through literally feel so relatable, it is almost as if you are in the same prison with them and fighting to survive, physically and internally. I have read and watched different mediums of fiction where women in positions of dominance is the main premise, yet this anime practically explodes full force with it. To say the least, it is a whirlwind of an anime that sends you on an emotional and creepily sensual roller-coaster ride... See full review

School Days: Valentine Days

Jul 1, 2022

Admittedly I enjoyed this OVA a degree more than the initial series mainly for the ridiculous, creepy, and wild comedic air at the center of it, plus the fact Itou Makoto is more likable and easy to sympathize with (as far as tormented harem protagonists are), especially with his female peers each forcing him to accept their chocolates (not to mention Taisuke). The story certainly made for a cute extra episode though still could have gone into deeper depth I thought. Actually would have preferred the original series to have had the same amusing tone and writing as this without the convoluted drama. While I... See full review

Labyrinth of Flames

Jul 1, 2022

Not bad for an early 2000s anime. I found this one mildly funny although it kind of left more to be desired in my opinion. The plot was more or less basic and most of the characters were entertaining hilariously, still it did not grab me for some reason.  The main male protagonist was okay yet Natsu and her aunt were the only two characters who I really liked. While I love Samurai-themed anime, this one did not excite me as much as I thought it would but made me laugh when the humor was well struck. It's not terrible but at the same time kind of meh.

Umisho

Jun 30, 2022

Heartfelt Slice of Life comedy that captures the drama and misadventures of sports teams plus the struggles of adolescence beautifully. This anime was suggested to me by a friend and while sport-themed fiction is not really my forte, I love how it addresses young love, teamwork, overcoming self-doubt and doing ones best regardless of the odds. While the main love story between Kamane and Amuro is one that is all too familiar, I nevertheless enjoyed it along with the craziness their fellow teammates bring about. The passion, outrageous hilariousness and relatable air blend together well making it a joy to... See full review

I watched this anime on suggestion from a friend and am DEEPLY IN LOVE WITH IT. I have seen different robot/cyborg themed anime before (primarily action super hero ones) yet this was something special. A Slice of Life Romantic Comedy with the right amount of heart, humor and harrowing moments that draw you in wanting to see more. The relationship between Hideki and Chi is so endearing and really hits deep as do the other central characters bonds with persocoms. They make the viewer think about what it means to truly be human and the love that transcends real and artificial lines. Hiroyasu is my favorite... See full review

School Days

Jun 26, 2022

This anime is a very mixed bag. On the good side it illustrates well how confusing, emotionally tepid and trying love-especially young love can be merged with unresolved emotions and sense of true devotion while on the bad, exploring the consequences of infidelity. Although I wish it defied and steered away from certain established and over-used tropes present in the Harem, Ecchi and High School genres. It was watchable and engaging up towards the sixth episode where the Love Triangle really began to get convoluted. All in all, I would not put it on a ranking as the best anime of its genre, yet is good as a... See full review

Death Note

Jun 5, 2022

Smart, pulse-pounding and beautifully exciting and tragic series. "Death Note" is that enveloping mind-bending anime that excels viscerally and intellectually while telling a classic and contemporary tale illustrating the battle to attain divine power, the consequences in seeking it and how despite ones cleverness and ambition can be their own downfall as a result of their own hubris. The balance between the supernatural and real worlds was well done along with the rules in using the Death Note, which beings in neither are ever truly able to avoid and cheat.  Say what you will but I love and... One of those classic anime that wins you over even when you don't think you will enjoy it at first. That was exactly my first standpoint on this anime before I eventually relented and watched it. A unique ode to both Dystopian and Western fiction that strikes a chord with the viewer. There is always an allure I find to traditionally drawn anime such as this which as a 90s kid is not hard to appreciate. Also, the just outlaw character is one from my childhood that appealed to me greatly and Vash's character is a great embodiment of that blending both childlike innocence with badass courage.  Truly an... Le Portrait de Petit Cossette

May 11, 2022

Literally one of the first anime I have ever seen that both scared, captivated and broke me to a significant extent. The plot is a basic one however it draws upon and pulls at ones psychological and emotional heart strings as the viewer is also seemingly lured along with Eiri, by Cossette's seeming innocence and endless torment. It could have focused more in part on the female characters who fear for Eiri's physical and mental wellbeing and made them more active players in helping him fight the false femme fatale evil the Cosette created by Marcello truly represented.  The torture Eiri's... Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!

Humorous, engaging, relatable and immersive slice-of-life anime with a diversely interesting array of characters and beautiful blend between reality and imagination. It's in-depth focus into the exciting and often contentious world and life of an anime artist is truthfully represented and its portrayal of characters of non-Japanese origins was great to see and endeared me more to the story and the Eizouken's goal as they juggled teenage life in between being creative. Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? III

May 10, 2022

Exceptionally thrilling, passionate and intriguing season that surpases the previous two as it tests the characters limits, raises the stakes and addresses the subjects of prejudice and how it often takes one person to make a difference when there's heated division between two opposing ends. The plot of this season was definitely more explosive and action-packed in contrast two the first and second season while still maintaining a gripping, dramatic yet heartfelt tone to it as Bell and his familia face their most dangerous trial yet. Fels of course was my favorite side character in this season as the... See full review

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? II

May 8, 2022

Entertaining if not in-depth second season for an anime of this genre. Definitely found myself amused by the plot lines centered around the conflict with the Apollo and Ishtar familias. It does deviate slightly from the adventuring path Bell and his comrades take but nevertheless made for an interesting, harrowing, and hilarious storyline that still retains that Fantasy RPG world feel to it. It was great to see the Hestia familia tested more in this season despite not having as many expeditions to the dungeon itself. The balance between dramatic, romantic and fun is taken up a notch in this one more than... See full review

Wonderfully enjoyable, deeply heartfelt and screamingly funny anime with a rich belnd of drama, comedy, and a resonance that reaches out to the adventurer in the viewer. As a lover of world Mythology and passionate Dungeons & Dragons player-this anime had me ecstatic from the moment I started Season 1. It's epic and endearing with stunning animation that really captures the setting of the world it takes place in and what an andventurer's life involves. Godzilla Movie 3: The Planet Eater

May 8, 2022

This third and final film in the trilogy certainly was a degree more harrowing, spine-tingling and emotionally gripping than the previous two films. Even though the reimagining of Godzilla and Ghidorah were sort of intriguing yet at the same time unusual and took away from what made those kaiju incredible when they were originally conceived. The main characters certainly displayed more emotion and depth (especially the main protagonist) as opposed to the preceeding movies, still there is more that could have been done that would have made this trilogy more engrossing and noteworthy in the franchise. Godzilla Movie 2: City on the Edge of Battle

May 8, 2022

This CGI film trilogy certainly is not a version the famous kaiju deserved and this sequel to the first film despite having some promising ideas really did not improve in terms of character and plot development. Epic though it was, how it completely changed Godzilla from the creature fans know and adore was both odd and really confusing. Had it improved upon the errors prevalent in the first film, it would have been better and made the plot, setting and characters motivations more sensible. While the movie is watchable, it is not one to critically acclaim. I would much rather watch one of the many classic... See full review

Godzilla Movie 1: Planet of the Monsters

May 8, 2022

As a longtime Godzilla fan I found this reimagining of the kaiju not quite impressive, awe-inspiring or central to the plot compared to previous screen representations. Having Godzilla appear as a naturally-formed being and not a flesh-and-blood creature made the character seem entirely different and alien to what a lot of fans know and love about him. While the plot was intriguing, it could have been handled far better than it eventually had been told. CGI Anime films I am not opposed to yet for a Godzilla movie it almost did not seem like an appropriate fit. Also the characters could have been flushed out... See full review

An epic, thrilling and emotionally gripping anime that touches deep on the heart focusing on the powerful bond between father and son, self-sacrifice in the belief of ones friends and overcoming ones own self-doubt and fear. As a fan of the 1960's live tokusatsu version, this was of special interest to me having grown up on mecha anime. The additional fantasy elements in the anime made the story more unique and interesting.  Harrowing with richly complex characters, engrossing narrative, and a "retro" style which being a 90s kid I wholeheartedly appreciate. This anime vaugely reminded me of another I remembered from my childhood and while it's not as popular as other mecha anime, it does have enjoyable aspects to it. While the plot is basic and most of the characters are far from admirabble, still it does present a heartfelt, and engaging story concerning wrestling with personal desires and duty, prejudice towards different races and all the drama culminating in between. It's a fun watch for lovers of 80s anime. While I personally prefer the Gundam franchise more, this one is not without its perks.
