Both have a protagonist who wishes to atone for past mistakes. They each fall under the shonen category, and have battle subjects for much of their episodes. Both Kekkaishi and Fullmetal Alchemist is about accomplishing a task that is considered by the protagonists friends as impossible. And each have a main character who can get offended by a snide remark from another party. If you like one you will surly like the other.

Both exceptionally well told stories, FMA and Princess Mononoke feature interesting characters making hard decisions while learning about themselves and their respective worlds (while kicking major butt). Sweet, heartbreaking, and intense, both FMA and Princess Mononoke focus on the complexities in learning the nature of family, truth, trust, and growing up.

Though "Kino's Journey" is a short, episodic series and "Fullmetal Alchemist" is a epic drama, the themes of and impulses behind the two are strikingly similar. How and why people choose to live in their respective worlds and how they interact with one another based on wildly variant values are explored through the journeys of adolescent protagonists trying to make sense of it all. In both shows, the travelers (who initially don't want to get involved in local business) visit several unusual towns with fundamentally flawed and/or amusing gov'ts, traditions, values, etc. only to heavily affect and/or be affected by the town. Both beautiful, funny, and sad (or heart-wrenching), FMA and Kino's journey explore dark themes through thoughtful storytelling, compelling characters, and great animation. In many ways, Kino's Journey is FMA-lite; likewise, FMA could be a much more complex , tragic, Kino's Journey.

In these series two characters seemed completely alike: Atsushi Otani and Edward Elric. If you liked at least one of them you'll definatelly like the other one. Both are short, hate to be called midgets, have a explosive atitude, but sometimes can be really serious and make really smart decisions. So although the themes of these two animes are different, Lovely Complex is about school romance and Fullmetal Alchemist is more fantasy-like, but the jokes surrounding those two main characters are really alike. So if you want to laught a lot - watch them both :)
