The main characters of both anime become a being/monster and even though at first they are scared and confused, they overcome it and become pretty badass. Who thought recomendations have to be atleast one hundred characters long, like that is so annoying. Ayways, if you liked Tokyo Ghoul, you'll like Ajin and vice versa.

Both shows are about a guy who becomes a monster and has to learn how to handle their new abilities as well as to try to not get captured (or killed in Tokyo Ghoul's case). Both are also action-packed and, while I liked Ajin more than Tokyo Ghoul, fans of one will enjoy the other

Ajin has a very similar feel to Tokyo Ghoul and there are parallels between the two story lines. Both are compelling stories with intriguing characters. However, in my opinion, there are signficant differences between the two that give each a unique and gripping narration.

PurpleCatAngel PurpleCatAngel says...

Like Ajin, Tokyo Ghoul is about a boy who is treated as human in the beginning, but then gains a power that's supernatural to humans so he's treated like a monster. Also, like both series' both boys learn to train and control their powers until they get used to it and they come to accept who they are.

pdraven pdraven says...

Often dark anime featuring male main characters who find themselves changed into humanoid monsters who end up battling others of their new type. Frequent explicit violence, government agencies trained to fight the monsters, and maintenance of friendships (or at least attempts at such) with humans also factor into both series.

Hutai Hutai says...

Dark world where humans and and "monsters" live in the same society. ( Ajin (demi-humans) and ghouls). Both protagonists are living normal life, studying in school when accident happens and they find out that they're not humans anymore. Both main characters are being hunted by the police forces and special ops. Both MC's experience a lot of pain and are subjects of experiments and insane abuse.Lots of action, violence, gore, fight between humanity and ajin/ghouls. Psychological, questioning morals of what's good and bad/right or wrong, and humanity. Good soundtracks

onecookie onecookie says...

Even though they are very similar in nature, with both main characters leading normal lives in the beginning, then becoming "monsters" and being hunted by the police, both characters experiencing torture and abandonment, they examine the same situation from two different view points based on each character's personality.

KhaosEmerald KhaosEmerald says...

The core of these anime are dark with compelling supernatural bases too unique to be cliche.

The main male protagonist of each, though intelligent, must learn more about themselves as the series progresses and learn to harness their powerful abilities.

Conflict sparked by societal fear between these "other-wordly beings" and police.

ellagilligan35 ellagilligan35 says...

These two anime are very much alike, though Ajin is more realistic.

-Both have main male mc with dark hair who becomes something other than human but wants to live a normal life

-Both mc have a friend with Blonde hair

-Both mc must hide from an organisation run by regular humans

Replace Ghoul with Ajin and you almost have the same premise, plus the atmosphere is similar. Levels of morality come in to play.

Rascal Rascal says...

Two very simple horror anime with something to say about the human condition, also contain the very same tropes and character types; a main character becoming the feared species in society, an evil corrupt member of his kind trying to kill a lot of humans, and all of the ajin/ghouls have edgy looking weapons that aren't very well-explained so that it can be a fighting seinen.

koij koij says...

BOth share similar themes, and a deep sense pf phsychological thriller. With lots of turns and twists they are a delight to watch. You will not be disappoin ted. Give it a go.

FriendlyDemon FriendlyDemon says...

What could happen when humans are no longer at the top of the food chain? How are the "new humans" viewed by society? Violence or friendship, what is the correct conclusion? And what really does it mean "to be human"? Both anime try to come with an answer so if you've watched one, see what the other has to say.

Parasyte -the maxim-

Parasyte -the maxim-

In secret, alien parasites drift downwards toward Earth. Their directive: to take control of a human body and thrive in secret. When a parasite attempts to take over Shinji, an ordinary high school student, he stops it in his arm to save his mind. With the strange power of amorphous muscle, the curious parasite strikes an uneasy truce with Shinji: it will keep him alive and strong so that it may continue living, and will help protect him from the other parasites that might not take kindly to Shinji's mind still actively working. Can Shinji gain the courage to face the parasites and protect humanity? And would it even make a difference if he did?

Similar themes: young people coming to terms with a strange power that separates them from normal humans. Both are serious, complex, and well-written.

Epimondas Epimondas says...

There are quite a few similarities between these two from the psychological to the huge part of the story taking place in the woods with a tough adversary or two.  Both main characters discover one day they are inexplicably or have become something more than human.  Both are essentially distrusted, feared, and/or hunted by both humans and beings similar to themselves.  Both the enemy entities in these animes hunt or kill humans like they are nothing or nothing to be concerned with nor as if doing so matters or has any consequences.  The color of the animation, direction, camera movement, and anime art are similar though the style to Ajin is a bit more 3d/cgi ish, both are filled with pretty realistically proportioned characters and light and shadows.  Both main characters feel isolated from friends and family or literally are and thus often feel alone though Shinichi has Migi.

Hutai Hutai says...

Dark and cruel world. A fight between humans and parasytes/Ajin. Both anime have a school boy who's pretty much innocent and naive, and finds himself to be the parasyte/ajin. Lots of action, violence, gore, fight between humanity and ajin/ghouls. Psychological, questioning morals of what's good and bad/right or wrong, and humanity. Shinichi has Migi, Kei has IBM ( Invisible Black Matter) who fights and protect them.

Niviva Niviva says...

In a world where parasytes with unknown origins take over human bodys and eat humans our main character is forced to cohabitate with one of these parasytes. What will he do and how will he live now that he knows about the existence of these parasytes that feed off his fellow humans.

Attack on Titan

Over a century ago, mankind was devoured by giant beings of unknown intelligence and origin known as Titans – creatures that eat humans alive indiscriminately and for no apparent reason. The remaining population has managed to survive the last hundred years only by building a multi-walled city capable of keeping the Titans at bay, training military recruits to patrol the perimeter and gather intelligence about their mysterious foe. Eren and Mikasa have lived a relatively peaceful life behind the city's walls, but when a massive Titan appears, smashing the outer barrier and unleashing a wave of terror, their lives are brutally changed forever...

In both series we have people fighting against creatures (Demi-humans in Ajin and titans in Attack on Titan), who clearly are stronger than humans themselves. The two main characters from these shows soon discover that they're actually part of those creatures, and join forces with the other humans to aid them in combating those creatures, using their respective unhuman abilities. Also, it is worth mentioning that both series have a dark setting.

If you like fighting. Explicit violence. Mysterious plot. Cunning war tactics where both the good and the bad guys use their smarts. Ajin tells the story of a species of the same title that had been tracked down in Africa. Ajin are said to have immortality along with supernatural powers, but behave just like any normal human being. Since its first discovery, more and more Ajin have found their way into the present world, and Kei Nagai is one of the characters who encounters one in a tragic way. After walking home from school, Kei is killed instantly by an oncoming truck, but is revived by a mysterious dark matter. After rising from the dead, the towns people immediately targeted him as an Ajin, and from there the action begins. The anime tries to express some complex truths about life and death, while showing us the more dark side of human nature along with it.

Kei and Ken suffer at the hands of another by some tragic event, which leads them into a world they never asked to be a part of. They both have transformed into a completely different being, allowing both protagonists to revive themselves after being killed. They both must now use these new forms as defense mechanisms to help put an end to the constant terror that threatens their city, but to also protect the ones they care about. Neither characters posed a threat to the world prior to their curse, which was undeserving, but now are both targets by humans because of their accidents.

I'm kind of surprised no one has recommended these two as being similar. Both are CG anime by the same studio with the same character designer, so visually they are very similar. The stories aren't that similar but both are a bit dark and deal with the supernatural (aliens are supernatural right??) and focus on a male main character. Both deal with immortality as well.

The main reason for this recomendation is the visuals. If you like the character designs or are looking for another good CG anime then I recommend this. (Although somehow, Sidonia managed to make the character movements appear more natural despite being made before Ajin....what's with the regression.....although the difference isn't that big)

Ajin and Inuyashiki are decent sci-fi thrillers with a main character who becomes non-human in a world that won't accept him, and he must learn where he fits in. The main element that these two shows share is the siimilar power that the main characters have, which is being able to summon monsters to control in order to do the fighting for them.

In both of the shows, the monsters are animated with CGI, yet Ajin has its whole animation done by CGI while in Fairy Gone this is only present in the "fairy" designs.

The settings are quite different from one another as Fairy Gone is set in a European-like country while Ajin just takes place in present Japan, yet the two shows emphasize the challenges that the characters that are able to control these monsters have to face in order to fit in their respective society.

Epimondas Epimondas says...

Both involve giant shadowy beasts that are always with the user but mostly stay invisible.  Though there's a a hint or element of magic in their existence, most fighting is melee oriented.  Both stories feature major characters that newly acquired this special ability.  Though the circumstances, reasons, and methods were different, both anime involves human and monster experimentation and modification.  Both styles of anime are visually similar and are not far different to  when they were made.  The atmosphere in both are comparably grim though for different yet somewhat similar reasons aka: terrorism for Ajin; and the after math of war for fairy gone.  Fairy gone feels slightly more easy going and hopeful than Ajin.
