Both anime are about high school boys who are passionate about the sport they love. There are lots of different personalites and different approaches to the sport. From seasoned veterans to newcomers to those who don't care about anything but the sport they love. Both have a mix of humor and melodrama.

These are essentially the same anime, just Iwatobi is guys and swimming, Bamboo Blade is girls and kendo. Both involve a group of students and their club advisor trying to ressurect an old sports club in their school. They spend their time teaching a member or two who's new to the sport and preparing for tournaments. There's a rivalry with another school in both and even the characters are similar. Kirino and Nagi are the cute enthusiastic ones who never shut up, Haru and Tama are the quiet prodigies, Satori and Rei are the bespectacled brainiacs, you get the point. The biggest difference between the two is that Free! has a lighter more summery happy feel. Both are light and happy, but Free! is a little more so.

While they have different plots, both series contain themes of friendship and plenty of hot pretty boys.  Both contain plenty of "manservice", which includes naked (or half-naked) boys and BL-ish undertones.  Free! is a bit more grounded and serious, while CHEDCL is a parody and more comical.  Still, if you like series with hot anime boys then you may like both series.

They both regard a group of friends and their experiences in life. Whereas Nijiiro has romance, free! focus more on friendship and swimming. They are both carefree animes that make you feel warm inside.

Both Free! and Yowamushi do an incredible job at representing their respective sports, while creating a fun, often over-the-top, show that pulls you along with its own force. With an interesting and diverse cast, there'll be moments of laughter, tears, and you might even find yourself cheering on these fictional people as they aspire to be the best they possibly can, even if that means straining their bodies to the limit.

Kabukibu and Free are shows about underdog high school clubs which lack resources & experience. The club members come together and make big things happen with passion and a strong will to succeed. Both sets of characters are extremely likeable, and will have you cheering for their success.

Just trust me on this one. IDOLiSH7 is basically a sports anime with singing, and the exact same kind of sports anime as Free!: boys forming a team and working to reach their goals while also working through their personal issues (one of which involves one of their rivals who won't even have a normal conversation with them). Oh yeah, and let's throw in a bit of ship baiting for good measure.

Both anime have that team effort where they work hard to become really good at something. Both have examples of rivals from rival schools.

Later in the Free! series, more side stories appear which is also present in Ensemble Stars.

There is also lots of competition that gets to higher and higher levels.

The swimmers and singers are all male so you have lots of similar male connections.

Don't know how to explain it too well, but these two anime just really seem to be similar to each other.

Backflip!!

Backflip!!

Dedicating your life to something you love during your fiery days of youth...of course, there is frustration, and fights, but see how these boys work together as a team towards a similar goal in this drama about sports and youth.

Backflip!! and Free! are both sports animes featuring characters with very similar vibes and relationships, like the way that they all get along and the friendship dynamics between them. The fanservice in both is also present, I mean, Free is a swimming anime so that couldn't be avoided, while Backflip is a gymnastics anime, both sports involve more skin showing than other sports like soccer or volleyball would.

Also- the art in both animes is SO similar...and I don't mean art style, I mean the way during a swimming/gymnastics competition or a breakthrough during training a character has this deep artistic vision inside their mind. In Free, Haru envisions water, swimming freely through it, like a dolphin, while in Backflip, Shotaro & other characters envision a bird, flying freely through the air.

The symbolism in both animes is immaculate!
