Cat Soup

Cat Soup

Cat Soup is an extremely abstract, abnormal, and at times, disturbing adventure, from the director of Nadesico. This 30 minute OVA follows two kittens through what seems to be the underworld, as they search for one of their lost souls. Along the way, they encounter new (edible) friends, scary situations, and even the end of the world! Will these felines manage to return unscathed? Or more importantly, avoid becoming the main course for dinner? Confusion abounds in this quirky OVA.

Cat Soup and End of the World are perfect recommendations for each other. Both possess a certain "oh my god, what the hell am I watching right now??" quality that will leave you clueless and scratching your head, while laughing. Randomness and craziness abound in each of these shorts, though Cat Soup is undoubtedly the darker of the two. If you liked one, I simply cannot believe you wouldn't like the other.

Rar Rar says...

Both End of the World and Cat Soup are as colourful as they are surreal - the abstract landscapes matched by equally strange, almost grotesque events. If you enjoyed the apparent simplicity but appreciated the dark humour of one, you may enjoy the other too.

r2kordmaa r2kordmaa says...

If you find yourself liking End of the World, you should watch Cat Soup.  Both anime are pure definitions of surrealism; if you liked one, be sure to watch the other as well.

Omurqi Omurqi says...

Cat Soup and End of the World have just about the same "WTF DID I JUST WATCH" value. They are about an abstract, bizarre journey through a strange world with very little clue what's going on. Understanding is overrated, if you enjoyed the bizarreness in one of these, you'll love the other.

FLCL

FLCL

Naota Nanbada is a boring young boy who leads a boring life in a boring town. His older brother has left for America, and the closest he comes to any excitement is when his deadbeat dad has too much sake. But things change one day when a bizarre girl zooms up to him on a scooter and smacks him in the face with her guitar. What's more, once Naoto returns home he discovers that this strange woman has arrived ahead of him and moved in! Not only does she constantly engage in perverted activities with Naota's father and flirt with the young man himself, but she also claims to be an alien who is searching for the ‘Pirate King.' Now, Naota must learn to live with this new intruder, deal with an odd government agent who sports exceptionally large eyebrows and the mysterious Medical Mechanica, and come to terms with the fact that there are a variety of robots and weapons emerging out of his head - amongst other things. Perhaps boring wasn't so bad after all...

EofW and FLCL are both spastic mindf*ck anime, and allow for a wide range of viewer interpretation of what's going on in the anime. Both anime see the protagonists try to save the world, and both include a living robot companion that fights alongside them. The way in which both anime end are also arguably similar, including the theme that they both portray. Luckily, both EofW and FLCL are short anime, and thus checking either one out won't be such a waste of time.

Omurqi Omurqi says...

Both FLCL and End of the World are shows that take place in a strange, colourful world and are driven by a completely random plot. You'll get vague hints about what is going on in both shows, but not enough to make you actually understand it. Fans of randomness rejoice! These two are a perfect fit for each other.

hamletsmage hamletsmage says...

A robot companion, aliens, and some really abstract mindf*ckery. Both anime also include a normal human getting involved in some interstellar battles.

Noiseman Sound Insect

Noiseman Sound Insect

In the town of Cahmphon, an experiment of Dr. Franken's goes terribly wrong, creating a monster called Noiseman. Under heavy oppression, a group of young people rebel against this creation, to save the town, and the sound from being literally vacuumed away.

Rar Rar says...

End of the World and Noiseman are both short, sharp assaults on the senses. The simplistic character designs are offset by crazy, colourful worlds and even stranger plots, if you enjoyed the ride through one, the other should keep your need for speed satisfied as well.

SirNiXXon SirNiXXon says...

End of the World is shorter than Noiseman, but both drink from music, videoclip language, media culture, strange-colorful-and-distorted-animation, along with unusual stories. The similarities are even greater when comparing the second half of End of the World with Noiseman.

Extra

Extra

What do you get when you cross a robot, a baby, a parasol, and a homicidal personality? Just one of the players in a futuristic and violent game of life and death. Children with guns, demented astronauts, slick shade-wearing badasses, robots gone wrong and more clash in a bloody and frantic experience through the streets of a dystopic city.

Got a few minutes to kill? These two are short enough that you can watch it and be done in minutes. They both posscess studio 4C's strangeness, and unique graphicwise.

Omurqi Omurqi says...

Both Extra and End of the World are very short, very confusing works. They both have their share of violence and definitely share their wierdness factor. Want to watch something random and violent for a couple of minutes? Give this one a shot!

Digital Juice

Digital Juice

From the minds of six directors comes Digital Juice, a Studio 4C collection of six shorts that border on the unusual. From chicken's insurance to trips to the moon, to a wine glass that might be... pregnant?! You can find it all here in one confusing and abstract twenty-minute package.

Now, I'm not recommending these two for each other just because they are both by Studio 4C. Rather, one of the shorts in Digital Juice reminded me a GREAT DEAL of End of the World, and vice versa. Craziness all the way around. You should like it.

Eternal Family

Eternal Family

In a world where reality series are in high demand, an experiment was concocted: take regular folks who have dropped through the cracks in society, brainwash them to believe they are a real family, and see how they function as a family unit. The regular populace was so interested in the idea that this family was put in their own reality series, of course! Living in a closed environment and unaware of the outside world, this dysfunctional bunch do everything they can to remain sane... that is, until they accidentally escape!

End of the World and Eternal Family share more than the same studio that created them. Both are very, very weird and random, with a spastic type quality that is stronger than most series out there. Beautiful animation in both as well, highly recommended!

Genius Party

Genius Party

Seven stories are told in seven very different ways. In a Dahli-esque Serengeti, a tale of a hunter and hunted unfolds. A young boy finds a useful device and is sucked into a futuristic battle. A slow-paced train ride takes two delinquent school children for a ride to the beach and down memory lane. And a baby travels through his dreams because of the ‘Happy Machine’ – amongst other tales.

Omurqi Omurqi says...

Bizarre, experimental and yet not completely nonsensical, End of the World and Genius Party combine interesting artstyle with stories that are incredibly weird at first glance, but hold more to them than what you initially see. If you enjoyed one of these, definitely give the other a shot!

Paprika

Paprika

In Japan, a team of scientists have created a medical breakthrough: a device that allows the wearer to enter the dreams of a patient, for the purpose of healing. The talented Paprika is a master at her profession, but complications have now appeared in the form of a “dream terrorist” – an unknown foe who inserts nightmares into the minds of those who use the device. The victims are swept up in a ghoulish parade of dolls, kitchen appliances, and musical animals, and are reduced to a vegetable state – or worse. Now, Paprika and the team of scientists must delve into the minds of those affected to figure out the source of the tampering before more people, including themselves, are damaged beyond repair.

Both series will entertain the veiwer with some unique visuals and will at times confuse the viewer with it's plot.  Granted End of the World is much shorted than Paprika but both series do well in their overall story and create an enjoyable experience for just about anyone.
