I've recommended a lot of stuff based on craving gore, or wanting badass characters, but that recommendation is based on the actual topic: medieval war. Not much blood, maybe, what was memorable is the characters: their strugges and their bond. So I remember it fondly.

Seriously I could add any animes to watch instead of Drifters. But that one has a similar topic.

Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan

When Sakura’s not dodging her spiked bat Excalibolg, he’s fighting for his life on river escapades. And when he’s not quick enough, Dokuro-chan’s catchy incantation brings him back to life! Drifters is trying to be a cool bloody comedy. But even this cute girly stuff did a better job at it. It's much funnier, and much MUCH more bloody. One of the bloodiest anime that I have ever seen. If you think that Drifters is the best anime ever made, then you overlooked a lot of better ones. Because even that girly anime satisfied my thirst for gore better than Drifters did.

Akira

Akira

Following the disaster wrought upon the world by a mysterious being called ‘Akira’, Neo Tokyo is now in social and economic turmoil. In such a decaying city, feisty Kaneda and his shy friend Tetsuo survive by running around in a biker gang, chasing local rivals and generally evading the police. Everything changes, however, when Tetsuo crashes into a strange-looking boy during a bike chase and the military ends up taking him away. When he eventually returns to his friends, he’s no longer the same weak little boy they always knew – in fact, a military experiment has turned him into something beyond human imagination. While the military is intent on reclaiming its specimen at any cost, Tetsuo is sick of being bullied around and is about to show everyone, including his friend Kaneda, exactly who is boss.

The coolest thing I've found in Drifters is the Black King's power.

SPOILERS: He hurts healing to hurt... really badly.

The idea that healers aren't just helpless servants seemed revolutionary... But then I remembered that I've seen healing gone wrong before...

Akira did a much better job at it. I consider it to be the first anime that I've watched. You should too so it can give you some perspective on what a good anime is supposed to be. Akira offer freaky mind blowing stuff. I still don't understand it much... but I sure as hell enjoyed it more than Drifters.

Using famous historical figures to defeat other-worldly enemies.  All centered around Oda Nobunaga (In one form or another.)  Plus a fair bit of adult humor, although one more than the other.

In both anime Japanese military crossover to a Tolkien-esque world. In Drifters, only a handful of legendary fighters from the past and several notable figures appear. In Gate, a massive modern military force invades with the goal of seeking peace. Despite such a goal, glorious OP bloodbaths still ensue.

Castlevania and Drifters are both violent series with similar gothic fantasy tones. There is also a connection between the legendary historical figures in Drifters and the variety of vampires from different world cultures as well as Dracula, who needs no introduction.

If you liked it because it retraces the technological evolution of humanity from the beginning. Both animes gradually add new technologies from new eras. The difference is that Drifters connects technologies with magic while Dr. Stone is more realistic.
