Allright. It's been a while since I've done something like this so bear with me as I try to find my way again.I did quite a lot of them in the past on a different website which you can find here: http://legendsofsatura.net/index.php/forum125/6-reviewing-guild.html ....They probably aren't very good though but please do stop by if you have the time and inclination. Originally the site was for writers, mostly original but also fanfiction. Also I'm Dutch so there will be spelling errors. If you find them annoying give me a shout and I'll try to fix them. Oh, I will try to keep spoilers to a minimum but there will be some. Usually the worse I rate an anime the more spoilers this will contain. You have been warned So, you have probably already read what the animation is about in the discription given by Anime-Planet, which is the same as on the box. I will therefore try not go into the story that much unless I'm ranting about something (spoilers). ART: Well, that was certainly something different. I like. There is something to said for experimenting with the medium instead of giving us the standard fare in the art direction. While not completely off the rack it has a very unique feel and the visuals match it perfectly. Just have a look at the DVD cover because that is rather distinctive for what you get in the anime. SOUND: The music is fast paced and this also suits the anime. There is quite a bit of action so the fast music is fitting. Voice acting is pretty good but I have very few complaints in that department anyway. CHARACTERS: Main character is Ogura. By accident she discovers that she is a e-gene holder with the ability to fight off the alien invasion that hit the Earth. At first hesitant about the power and its responsibility she eventually embraces her fate. It helps that she is a huge guns nut and has a passion for the military. DOGOO is an alien whos world was destroyed by the invading aliens and came to Earth to help humanity. To do this he collected the DNA of distinguished people and used it to create the E-gene holders. Only these E-gene holders have the power to fight off the alien invasion. STORY: We have all seen alien invasion stories before where the main character is the only one able to fight them off. Usually because only (s)he can use some sort of mecha or because of some strange power that only they have. This is not the case here. Sure Ogura is very important in the story and the main focus but she is not the only E-gene holder. In fact she is one of the last found and she was discovered by accident because she was in the right place at the right time. No, her importance comes from her tactical sense. As she is the E-gene holder of Oda Nobunaga she inherited his sense of tactics and passion for guns. This gives her a superior ability on the battlefield that makes her presense really important. Not all is good though and this had to do with the pacing of the anime. This pacing problem could have been fixed though by changeing one thing: The order of episodes. I'm not sure how it happened but the creator thought it a good idea to have Jack the Ripper as one of the E-gene holders. Adam is the first E-gene holder she meets and he carries the genes of the infamous British serial killer. But E-gene holders are good guys and we can therefore not have old Jack being a cold hearted killer. So a way had to be found to make him one of the good guys and they did. The problem is that they did this in the middle of the final battle. Yep, the final battle was put on hold midway to tell the back story of Jack the Ripper. Just so that he could pull a Dues ex Machina move in the final episode and help Ogura save the day. There was no real reason to wait so long with this back story for Jack and they could have done it much earlier in the series. To do it now rips you out of the action and really don't care about any of it. The way it is now I would have prefered it if they left the entire episode concerning Jack out of the series. I liked the E-gene powers in the series as it is linked to the original. For instance Jess is the E-gene holder for Newton and her powers are gravity based. This brings some added depth to the powers and it means that every E-gene holder has a different ability. There are no doubles either. There is one holder for Nobunaga, one for Newton, etc. Not all holders are offensive and some don't fight at all. Every team consists of an even ratio of support and attack holders. In Oguras' team she and Adam are offensive while Newton is mixed and the final member is purely defensive. Some holders don't go out into battle at all but remain at the base as generals overseeing the overall battle. This makes Ogura, with the combat experiance of Nobunaga, a valuable field commander whp often changes the course of a fight because of it.
At certain times the animation is so cool. Main girl is dippy and really into army accessories. She would flip during battle and have a blood lust for killing, then as soon as she went back to "herself" she became a nerdy, freaked out about everything little girl. As a main character, not very enjoyable. There is a ton of side characters that aren't very interesting without much depth but the story will follow them around for a while. Jack was the coolest but it doesn't really focus on him or his history until literally the last episode. I hated the people running the organization. Plus her training is done without explanation and quite suddenly. Pacing of story overall is fast so that's good at least. Sound design annoying.
Secret Santa Reviews 2015 The story is about a highschool girl called Ogura. While visiting Taiwan, they are suddenly attacked by strange creatures, that we later find out are called Evolutionary Invasion Objects (EIO). During this attacked she learns that she is an E-gene holder, where she has the power of Oda Nobunaga. Only E-gene holders have the power to defeat these EIO and the the genes are from various famous figures throughout history with their power being influenced by them. Eg, Oda Nobunaga gave Ogura the power of guns. After the attacked she manipulated into joining an organisation called DOGOO to fight the EIO along with other E-gene holders. The music throughout the anime was pretty good and the opening song being will suited. The animation was very good, with a different take on the art of the locations and characters. Made it more worth a watch. The characters were all nicely varied, with some having two types of personalities (this is explained as to why in the anime). The overall story wasn't too bad but it didn't really stand out, which is a shame as there was much going for it but this was the only aspect that let it down.
