The Perfect Insider

Dec 19, 2015

*This review is spoiler free*
Overall: 6/10 (Slightly above average) - The Perfect Insider is a seemingly cerebral mystery, at least at first. While it is clever at times, some of the "pieces of the puzzle" are very niche and not something that can be figured out by most people regardless of intelligence. The characters are good, though they are somewhat secondary to the plot. Overall, it's worth a watch but it isn't anything spectacular. Recommended for: Fans of mystery, particularly if they have a mathematics or computer science background. At only 11 episodes it isn't much of a time... See full review

Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie

Nov 15, 2015

This review has no movie spoilers, but some minor spoilers from Arise may be present. I recommend watching Arise or Arise: Alternative Architecture before the movie anyway.
My Arise review: http://www.anime-planet.com/users/SixShooter/reviews/21346 Overall: 6.5/10 (Good) - Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie is the high-octane conclusion to Arise and is noticeably better quality than the earlier series. While it is still largely presented as a loosely-related reimagining of the original Ghost in the Shell canon, it manages to hold enough interest and in-jokes to be a fun watch for fans of the... Ghost in the Shell: Arise

Nov 1, 2015

This review has very, very minor spoilers in regard to one minor subplot. Overall: 5.75/10 - Ghost in the Shell Arise is less of a canonical prequel and more of a different take on the series altogether. While the old team remains similar, significant changes were made to Motoko's character (the main character) that I didn't think were good. The story is a bit disjointed and inconclusive. Animation is stellar in the action scenes, but issues with animating Motoko's face can be very apparent at times. Music is mediocre at best. That being said, plenty of action makes for an entertaining watch and those... See full review

Gangsta.

Oct 7, 2015

This is a spoiler-free review. Overall: 5.5/10 (Mediocre) - Gangsta is an anime that had tons of potential. At first glance there's a lot of new and unique concepts and ideas thrown in. To name a few, an interesting desert city setting, a deaf main character, more mature female character designs, and a unique take on "superpowers" I've been dying to see for a long time. Not to mention it stood out as a grittier anime among a sea of ecchi comedies and light-action harem. For several reasons, perhaps spurred by Manglobe's insolvency (now bankruptcy), Gangsta fails to deliver much more than a... See full review

25th review! This is a spoiler-free review. Overall: 8.3/10 - Cowboy Bebop is stylish, fun, and has a little bit of something for everybody. While it lacks enough focus in the story to make it a true masterpiece, it is very unique in almost every way and every anime fan should take the time to watch it.  Recommended for: Any anime fan should watch this at some point, for the sake of learning about the heritage of modern anime if nothing else. Baccano!

Sep 17, 2015

This is a spoiler-free review. Overall: 8/10 - Baccano! is fast-paced, action packed, and very unique. The characters are incredibly entertaining, the story is engaging, the sound is excellent, and the animation is impressive. That being said, the way it is structured feels unnecessarily convoluted and the whole thing is quite confusing until about halfway. I can't help but feel that it could have been better with a different structure. Recommended for: Any fan of horror, mafia, and... See full review

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

Aug 31, 2015

This is a spoiler-free review. That being said, there may be some spoilers related to the original 1995 movie. You should watch the movie anyway before viewing SAC.
This is going to be more detailed than my usual reviews due to my potentially controversial opinion. Overall: 8.25/10 - Ghost in the Shell SAC is a series that still lives up to modern standards despite its age. Animation and sound are well above most series and the overall story is excellent. The society is entirely believable and the atmosphere is great. That being said, it is not without flaws. Cyberbrain hacking crimes can get... See full review

Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet

Aug 31, 2015

This is a spoiler-free review. Overall: 6.25/10 - Gargantia on the Verduous Planet is essentially fun science fiction fluff. While not thought-provoking or particularly engaging, it is nevertheless an enjoyable enough series to watch. The story is predictable, characters are good but not great, and the animation is nice. It's a good series to watch if you are looking for something light. It's also a good pick for watching with family as long as you aren't too worried about light suggestive themes. Sword Art Online II

Aug 19, 2015

*My reviews are free of spoilers* Sword Art Online II has great ideas that are held back by poor plot structuring. If it had been done right, it would have been a great sequel to the awesome fantasy world that was the first Sword Art Online. Instead we are left with a reasonably entertaining, but poorly executed show. Recommended for: Sword Art Online fans, if you're in it for the characters. In my opinion the first arc is worth it for Sinon alone. Overall: 6/10-Slightly good. Story: 4.5/10-Slightly poor

Sword Art Online

Jun 8, 2015

This is a spoiler-free review. Guess this came out more fanboyish than I thought it would, but I would highly recommend seeing this series for yourself just to make sure the critics are right. Overall: 9/10 -  While the premise of being stuck in a video game seems interesting, it's been done and the truth is that you don't get very far with that alone. SAO did an amazing job of focusing on characters and keeping things fresh. The characters really do make this anime what it is, which is an engaging and memorable series based on a somewhat cliche premise. Animation and art is beautiful. Overall... See full review

Death Parade

May 13, 2015

This is a spoiler-free review. Overall: 6.25/10 - Good- Death Parade is a memorable and interesting series that will grab your attention. While you might expect it to be a thriller or horror, it turns out to be more of a drama. The characters are quite good and the sound and animation are also a step above average. Unfortunately, it is primarily episodic all the way until episode 8, which leaves little time for the overarching plot. The overarching plot, while touching, is quite simplistic. Overall, I would recommend giving it a watch. Recommended for: Any fan of drama. A memorable series for anybody and... See full review

Parasyte -the maxim-

May 8, 2015

*My reviews are free of spoilers*
Parasyte -the maxim- is an outstanding anime, with excellent character development, engaging battles, suspense (without cheap cliffhangers), and a well-expressed moral struggle throughout. Though the first two episodes feel kind of silly, it gets very good very quickly. Probably one of the top animes of all time and definitely the best recent title. Future Diary

Mar 30, 2015

This is a spoiler-free review. Overall: 5.5/10 (Mediocre) - Mirai Nikki, while it had a lot of potential, doesn't seem to know what it wants to be. Extremely dark topics such as rape, child abuse, and mass murder alternate rapidly within the same episode with absurd, entertaining, and theatrical enemies. In addition, the two main characters are, quite frankly, terrible people who barely develop during the vast majority of the show. The plot is largely sequential and has some significant errors in it. That being said, Mirai Nikki is still entertaining, unique, and somewhat emotional.  Recommended... See full review

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Mar 24, 2015

*My reviews are free of spoilers*
Neon Genesis Evangelion is a shounen mecha with a psychological/metaphorical twist. Despite a lot of promise, the story goes from being a repetitive and episodic "let's shoot the bad guys with our giant guns" thing to being completely insane and rushed. Every other aspect of the show is decent, but not great. It tends to ride the fine line between pretentious and brilliant, with some truly great metaphors at parts and excessive, seemingly pointless symbolism at other parts. Nevertheless, it is a unique show that will leave you thinking even if it... See full review

Deadman Wonderland

*My reviews are free of spoilers* This review will probably be pretty similar to what thecrimsonclaw said, as he nailed it well.
Deadman Wonderland is overall a somewhat entertaining but otherwise quite poor anime. The story is a complete mess, with basically every screw up you can have in a plot. The characters are mostly tropes, with the MC basically being even more annoying than your stereotypical shounen protagonist and the only interesting character getting almost no time. *My reviews are free of spoilers* For my review of the first Psycho-Pass go here: http://www.anime-planet.com/users/SixShooter/reviews/17874 Some applicable sections are copied from the first review.
Psycho-Pass 2 presents an interesting new villain and somewhat new plot that is more interesting and unique than the first. The music is significantly better, perhaps being one of my favourite soundtracks of all time (especially the OP and ED). Sadly, the conclusion is not particularly conclusive (and feels sort of like a backtrack), a couple of new characters are mediocre at best, and character... See full review

Paranoia Agent

Nov 24, 2014

*Going to be rewritten soon Paranoia Agent is perhaps the epitome of all things Satoshi Kon. In essence there is a crazy amount of symbolism and the lines between reality and imagination are very blurred. You never know if what you are seeing is reality, imagination, insanity, or symbolism.  These techniques are good at keeping the audience grasping for straws in an attempt to find out what is going on, but in the end it turns out to be something relatively simple that almost nobody would guess. I can't say too much more without spoiling it, but suffice it to say that the theme is created so well and... See full review

The story is non-linear and it is very difficult to discern what is real, what is not, and what person's eyes you are seeing through before the ending makes it all clear. It is this part that particularly stands out, as it is possible to figure out every single mystery and they are presented in a way that is convoluted and brilliant. Animation is about average. The problem is that it falls short with characters because they are almost never portrayed outside of combat situations and only a couple have development.
