Five minutes into one,  you could tell both were animated by studio Shaft. Everything from the visual artwork to the camera angles, might i add the impossible turning of the neck as one speaks, all the way to how the story is presented takes a role similar to the other. The only major difference that i was able to pick up, other that different plots and characters of course, is that mekaku city actors is a little less reliant on word play than bakemonogatari, hell, they even have a semi sidekick character( shinobu/ene ) included in the package. So its a given that if you like one, you will definitely like the other.

If you liked Bakemonogatari, you will clearly like Mekaku City Actors too. Bakemonogatari held my old "record for weirdest anime ever", but mekaku city actors is clearly much weirder. If you like getting confused, having no idea what you are watching, and having questions answered with new questions, then these are the animes for you!

SamIchi SamIchi says...

Just like atlas7 said, at the beginning of the show you could tell it was made from the same people, the creepy neck turning too (lol) I recommend both ways!! You've got to see the other if you liked either, I'm a big fan of Bakemonogatari and I've got to say, same vibe and everything while watching Mekakucity

Zilverwilg Zilverwilg says...

I found the art and the slow pacing in Mekaku City Actors had a lot of similarities with Bakemonogatari from the beginning when I started watching. The shows have both characters possesed with mysterious spirits.

In Bakemonogatari is it more in episodes different stories and in Mekaku City Actors is it all one story, but how the characters get introduced are all different stories.

I think if you liked Bakemonogatari like I did you also like Mekaku City Actors, and those who liked Mekaku City Actors go check out Bakemonogatari because these shows all look a like very much.

But I need to say don't expect an master who gives help in Mekaku City Actors, like in Bakemonogatari.

krukky krukky says...

Yep, it sure does look a lot like Akio Watanabe's adaptation of VOFAN's style of the Monogatari series, but to me unfortunately it looks like an imitation... and not a really good one at that. I don't mean to be negative about Mekakucity Actors, since I haven't still finished the series, but well into it, I can't help but being disturbed by the ways of wich it resembles Monogatari and yet is not as satisfactory as them... Sorry 'bout that.

Noriko Noriko says...

Very similar style, angles, and vibe. If you liked the animation and story telling in either Bakemonogatari, I'm sure you'll like Mekaku City Actors and other way.

YuiYui YuiYui says...

Soooo. these two anime have the same sort of story layout (completely all over the place) and both ended up being pretty confusing. They both have supernatural elements and both animated by the same studio (Head turns Shaft T_T). Well I think that if you enjoyed the storyline of one (if you could find some) then you should enjoy the other. So if you enjoyed the weird nature of one, check out the other.

boxdragon boxdragon says...

As mentioned multiple times by others both have Shaft's signature style, similar pacing and wonderful dialogue.

Aikoto Aikoto says...

Yep. Exaclty teh same stark colors, weird cutaways, random nonsense. It's like TV static- the anime. Basically, if you like one, you'll probably like the other. If you hate one, avoid the other.

The visuals are so good and if you love vampires and romance that anime will be best for you but I recommend you to watch Diabolik Lovers before watching Bakemonogatari

Durarara!! and Mekaku City Actors have a very similar art styles and plot. Both are about people with supernatural/bizarre powers living in the same city and crossing their paths even when at first they all seem to be independent stories.

Starletka Starletka says...

Both Durarara!! and Mekakucity Actors are filled with action and the supernatural. They start off with a bunch of unrelated characters and stories that all come together in the end. The two even share some of the voice actors.

CoolStoryBro CoolStoryBro says...

The art style is a watered-down mix of Bakemonogatari and Durarara!! in a nondescript To Aru Majutsu No Index setting, with the animation budget of a spinoff OVA filler.

If you are a fan of Durarara or Bakemonogatari you may or may not like Mekaku City Actors. Personally I found it to be nowhere near the level of quality of either in any aspect.

Both take place in a crowded city, they have characters who have secrets and special abilities and as the story goes, the plot gets bigger and bigger. They both have a similar vibe to each other.

exZachly exZachly says...

These two series involve supernatural abilities and a large group of interesting and important main characters (both stories are told from multiple POV), who are more connected than it seems at first glance; both are also crafted with a story that intertwines the characters lives that ties into the city they reside in.

Similar dark, mysterious atmospheres based around urban heroes.

There isn't too much similar to both anime, but they both have various characters with special powers and their own character color!

Nothing is as it seems and they both really do well with the storytelling and plot twists, they both also have the concept where not everyone may be good and not everyone may be bad...you just have to watch the next episode to find out what happens! As episodes go on, it just gets crazier and crazier.

There's also the fact that.....

==Slight spoiler beware!!!=

They both have a time loop effect going on.

Annalyn Annalyn says...

Both of these anime play with your mind in more ways than one. First, there's the visual. There are times when the backgrounds, shadow effects, or most other things about a scene go against everything you know about reality. Second, there's the story. It doesn't play out in a nice, clear manner. Reality within either anime is ellusive. It's all rather postmodern.

What else... both anime are filled with supernatural characters and happenings. If you loved either of these, the other is worth a try. Just be sure you watch beyond the first episode of Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica before you make any judgments.

YuiYui YuiYui says...

So this may be a weird recommendation but I think that these two anime are pretty similar in the sense that they are both dark themed anime, darker than you would expect. Plus they are both animated by the same studio and both follow a group of 'not normal' people. So I think if you liked one then I think you should enjoy the other.

Young people with powers gather into one group. Lots of fun quirky personalities. More going on than meets the eye. Combo of comedy and action. Cool animation (at least until Haratora's budget was, like, gone). While MCA is a better anime, they were both enjoyable watches and if you liked one, you might like the other.

They both start with some mystery regarding the superpowers but are later in the storyline revealed, you never get bored watching one of these.

Both anime are about a group of teenagers to young adults, working as a team to reach their goal.

They both have many main characters, as well as both having a concept with death. With Angel Beats, they are dead and in an in-between Heaven and Earth world, where as in MekakuCity Actors, the characters die or have near death experiences and revive with a magic ability. They also share a story that is not what it seems, as there is a major twist in the enitre story and you learn that not everything was as it seemed.

Overall, the ending episodes of MekakuCity Actors just had an Angel Beats! Feel to it.

Also, the opening song for Angel Beats and the ending song in MekakuCity Actors, are both sung by Lia.. which gives each anime a similar feel to them.

kathmom kathmom says...

They both lean on the drama + comedy side and feel very similar in terms of emotions. As in they become rather gloomy at some point.

Both are stylish, colorful series that use symbolism and sureallistic visuals.  The plots of both series (though different) are complicated, bizarre, and seem rather random at first (though things do eventually start to make sense towards the end of both series).  Both series also have plenty of funny moments as well as more serious moments (as well as moments that make you go WTF).

Both these shows are like Bakemonogatari. The plot is in comprehensible, the scenes are random and strange, and nothing ever makes sense. If you like one, you'll like the other and vice versa.

-Mekakucity Actors and Kiznaiver both include characters who are very different and would not normally associate with each other, connected through a fantasy-esque phenomenon.

-The protagonists of both come off initially as quiet and weak, some even match up similarly in roles and character.

-The main character also have some memory of the female lead that gets realized later on.

-Colorful cast of characters and similar art style.

cherrystarbear cherrystarbear says...

these shows really make me think of one another, the art style and the story are somewhat alike!

both are about a group of people linked by some kind of power or ability, the characters are very unique and colorful with each their own backstorie, their fate intertwine and they all face challenges and form friendships or in some cases develop deeper feelings for each other.

i really liked both shows, mekaku city i recommend watching if you like a unique and interesting animation style and cool musics, and kiznaiver i recommend if you want something more centered on the relationships forming between the characters and a bit less on the mystery side.

Both series unravel the possibilities of multiple universes, and how different decissions can end in a totally different outcome that ends changing all the wolrd. The main character and the villian of both series have very similar personalities (one that accepts current events as they come and another who denies it and wants to change or stop the time flow by repeating the same time frame again and again).
