Cross Days

Yuuki Ashikaga is a high-school freshman at Sakakino Academy. While working as a student librarian, he grows enamored of Kotonoha Katsura, a girl who frequents the library. Unfortunately, Kotonoha is already dating Makoto Itou, another schoolmate. The situation is further complicated when Chie, Yuuki's older sister introduces him to Roka Kitsuregawa, her kouhai in the basketball club. Roka becomes interested in Yuuki, who only has eyes for Kotonoha. In order to make him jealous, Roka lies and claims she already has a boyfriend, her former classmate Makoto Itou. Unfortunately for all of them, Roka's lie sets off a chain of events no one could have predicted...

If you thought Itou Makoto was a jerk before - wait til you see him in this short series that takes place at the same time as the original series. While the manga doesn't follow Makoto, we get a much darker insight into his motivations and character, which will eliminate any pity you may have felt before for him. Quite opposite to Makoto is our actual protaganist - Yuuki, who is in a relationship turmoil of his own too - but he is a much more righteous character and is appalled at makoto's actions. The series is a similarly well-written work and a nice view of some of the background events of school days. If you enjoyed the first, you should check this out too :)
