Both of these anime follow the actions of a small military unit caught up in a large war. With the focus on a very personal level, they are primarily character-driven, and show the struggles of regular soldiers. Both feature squads consisting of a few mecha pilots supported by mechanic, communications, and other support personnel. The plots are different enough to avoid seeming repetitive, but the series definitely give off a very similar feel.

The lead female character in both stories is has a similar voice and personality.  They are both about a war against a superior adversary using giant mechas.  The style of anime and flow of both stories are kindred.  Both unit commanders have similar personalities and a history with various people in power.  Pilots of mechas in both shows form strong rivalries with a competitive or enemy pilot.  The worlds in which both stories take place in look synchronous.  Tactics in both stories are also similar where the unit depends heavily on one giant mecha or one or two soldiers as well.  The girl and her mecha in Heavy Object bear the brunt of combat but her two friends form a kind of covert behind the lines secret weapon against enemy mechas that either destroy enemies or gives her a signficant advantage over them but her mecha is at a technical disadvantage.  The girl in Argevellon works to maintain the mech or improve it to give them a technical advantage.  But the main character's faction in Argevellon depends heavily on him and his mecha for combat advantages.  Entities in both shows works both sides of the war.

While Argevollen doesn't really deal with magic, the mech and pilot are rather expectional and pull off virtual miracles.  In both cases, the mechs are either modified or generations ahead of others.  We have not seen what Ernie will use but we have already been given the foreshadowing he will build the first new model in over 100 years and that means it will be generations ahead of the rest just like in Argevollen.  The worst monsters in Argevollen are humans who were subjected to dangerous experiments and engulfed by the changes.  In both series, we see at least one battle where the good guys are badly outnumbered by enemies or monsters and have to pull off miracles to win.
