After a covert mission goes wrong, Mobile Suit pilot Amuro Ray and his comrades are stranded on a remote island. The battalion was sent to a land called the Island of No Return to clear off any enemy forces, only to find a group of children and an enemy mecha attack. Now Amuro must find a way for them all to escape this mysterious land, but not before meeting a strange man—Cucuruz Doan.
Notes: The film is based on the first Mobile Suit Gundam TV anime's 15th episode of the same name.
I went into this with no expectations, I mean it was a remake of a much derided bog standard episode of a 1979 anime. That's why I'm glad to say I was blown away. This story, while not grand, is top notch. It has a lot of heart, and really brings Gundam's anti-war theme to the forefront in a refreshing way. The characters it presents while not explored in depth, are fleshed out enough to enjoy watching. The animation is glorious. Much like Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, it uses the 79 style in a modern way. My only complaint is in the CGI used for the Mobile Suits. Not that it's bad CGI, mind you, I simply just would've preferred a 2D look. The MS action, while sparse and scattered, is very fun. It balances comedy with the White Base crew and awe with the Zaku team. While none of the MS designs are necessarily new for Gundam, I appreciate them all the same. If you want a good, old-fashioned, Gundam story. This is for you.
Such a light and enjoyable movie, truly left me with a warm feel on my chest, good for cheering people up even though the premise is war lmao. To be honest I think it actually helped the plot a little, now we know why the interest in a random island full of little kids The art style and CGI are the same as Origin, i personally enjoy it, but if you previously didn't ... well, expect more of that. WARNING SPOILER LOADING... ?) My only let down is that for the big hype they builded with the announcement for the High Mobility Char's Zaku II it was only shown for like 3 seconds top, i couldnt even process the fact that it showed up before it was gone, but oh well i guess it was expected keeping in mind that Char had 0 business there.
