I do this too! I like to check out the anime lists of other people and then sort by rating and then check out the anime titles they have listed as most highly rated. But I have to be careful, because finding interesting titles to check out can get WAY out of hand. I mean, I already have 276 titles on my Want to Watch list. And I already don't have enough time to watch as much anime as I'd like - I don't even get to see anime every day, although I -do- try!
