All-Time Favorite Anime Series

1 Mushishi

Mushishi

There's simply nothing else like it. The tone of the narrative might be more low-key than action or comedy fans are used to, but its maturity is a breath of fresh air in a medium dominated by teenagers and high schools. Mushishi offers coexistence with nature rather than conquering it, no matter how strange it may be or what form it may take.

2 Ergo Proxy

Ergo Proxy

The quest for truth sets Re-L Mayer out into a destroyed world, looking for its secrets. It's not pretty.

3 Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

Continuing in the tradition of the manga and films, Stand Alone Complex challenges the audience with transhumanist philosophy, ethics, and the dangerous implications of merging technology with the human body.

4 Cromartie High School

Cromartie High School

Meet a school whose student body is anything but normal. Some of its attendees include a kid with a prehensile mohawk, a Freddy Mercury look-alike, a robot, and, well, a gorilla. Their antics would suggest they barely have a brain-cell to share between them. Hilarity ensues.

5 Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt

Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt

Now here's an anime that is positively gushing with style in every frame. The catchy soundtrack and "give zero fucks" attitude of its main charactes make this one a must-see for comedy fans, though viewers who are sensitive to dirty jokes or frequent profanity need not apply.

6 Squid Girl

Squid Girl

You gotta be squidding me! You've never heard of Squid Girl, the emissary of the sea here to inkvade the surface world? Well, where the gill have you been?

7 Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu

Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu

If you like the main series Full Metal Panic, but wondered what it would be like without all the mecha and super-serious stuff, then this is for you.

8 Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

For a series that's all about young girls in frilly dresses, it lays on the drama pretty thick. Madoka completely subverts your expectations of what an anime about magical girls is.

9 A Certain Magical Index

A Certain Magical Index

This action anime creates an interesting world where ESPers are not only normal, but measured, examined, and classified. In a world where it seems everyone has some kind of amazing power, one boy finds his complete lack of it can work to his advantage.

10 A Certain Scientific Railgun

A Certain Scientific Railgun

A spin-off of Index, this one follows the "Ace of Tokiwadai" Mikoto Misaka, the Level 5 electro-master. While having a generally lighter tone and fewer action sequences than Index, it's still another fun adventure through Academy City.

11 Gun x Sword

Gun x Sword

Gun X Sword is a straight-forward tale of revenge, but it's the main character Van you should pay attention to. Everything from his insistence to always wear his wedding tuxedo, to his awesome flexible sword thing, to the link he has to his mecha.

12 Scrapped Princess

Scrapped Princess

This anime is the tragic tale of a princess who was thrown away at birth, as commanded by the kingdom's god. This series seamlessly blends disparate elements of fantasy and sci-fi as if it's completely believable and can exist in the same world, while also telling the very human story of a girl who desparately wants to be accepted.
