Yakumo has much to teach about the art of rakugo, but both he and his ward Konatsu- a hot-headed young woman whose father was also a famous storyteller- are difficult people with a shared dark past. Yakumo refuses to train her, claiming that the world of rakugo is no place for women, and Konatsu has vowed to kill him, claiming that Yakumo murdered her father!
It's summer vacation, and the delighted Chiaki, Nodame, Mine and Masumi are on their way to the Nagano Music Festival. Chiaki begins his training as a world-class conductor and, in typical fashion, is quite successful; yet on the other hand, Nodame struggles as she starts to seriously learn about music for the first time. However, even though the two have worked tirelessly to meet the demands of their newfound musical lives, their relationship continues to progress slowly and frustratingly. Can Nodame and Chiaki balance both their new careers, and each other?
Chiaki and Nodame are still in Paris, ready to take their music-making to the next level. Nodame especially begins to display an unprecedented motivation for the piano, but she learns that with newfound progress comes newfound obstacles. Continuing to taste both frustration and triumph, she slowly realizes that the road to pianistic stardom seems more arduous and distant now than ever before. Everything is rising to a feverish pitch -- will her maturing relationship with Chiaki help or hurt her?
