A browbeaten and mistreated daughter is cast out of her family home and sent to audition as a bridal candidate for the heir to one of the most powerful families in the land. Considered nigh worthless for having failed to inherit the superhuman powers of the bloodlines into which she was born, Miyo Saimori lives her days unwanted and unloved. She is treated as a servant by her half-sister who, unlike Miyo, is blessed with unusual powers, while her step-mother and very own father have little time or love for their eldest daughter. Ultimately seen as nothing more than a nuisance and a drain on the family wealth, Miyo is packed off to the Kudo house as a bridal candidate for its heir, Kyoka Kudo. But whispers abound about the Kudo clan, the most powerful in all the land. Still, will the allegedly cold and cruel house into which Miyo aims to marry prove much warmer than the family she left behind?

* Contains spoilers * At first I was mesmerised by this anime - the animation was beautiful, pretty original ( which I'm very fond of ) and the opening seemed to really give off the atmosphere of a romance anime, it's just perfect; delicate, simple, slow but catchy. Unfortunately everything came crushing down as soon as I saw the characters designs - very stereotypical and overall boring. Just one look at them gave away everything and Gods, have I wished this anime wasn't going in the direction I thought it was, but it seems as though I'm not in Fortune's favour, because this anime is just one, big, better animated, less cringey adaptation of every single GachaLife mini-series/movie called "The Hated Child Is Secretly A Princess/ A Powerful Goddess etc." Of course, since I am me, I decided to give this anime a chance to redeem itself and I watched it until the very last episode… it, in fact, does NOT get better. As I said the characters are very stereotypical and boring, even their personalities are mundane. Miyo is just this typical, fragile, damsel in distress and the way in which this story is shown, gives her this "I'm not like other girls" vibe, which is unberable. Her trauma was also shown in such a boring way - seriously, there are so many better ways in which this could of been shown. It also got dealt with too easily - we're talking about years, YEARS of psychical and mental abuse and yet she gets rid of most of the trauma responses in like a few days, ( months??).Let's not forget Kiokya who, really, is not that great, he was literally just doing the bare minimum. The only good thing about him were his eyes.Ms. Yurie - she's precious, and should be protected at all costs. The story? - literally the ONLY thing that made it a little bit interesting was the plot with those Grotesquaries, which gave me hope - I'm not gonna lie - but it died just as quickly as this animes chances of being original. The plot with the Usuba family, also, could of been shown and explored in a better way, instead we got some sorry-ass family reunion and drama that got solved in like 0.2 seconds - very entertaining. I'm greatly disappointed in this anime and the only things that saved it were the animations and opening.

My Happy Marriage is lovely and in so many ways. Miyo has grown up in a family where she hasn't been shown love. She's used to living like this. She doesn't see value in herself and just goes along with life, going through the motions. But then, when she's at her lowest, she meets Kudou. He shows her that people do care for her, that she deserves to live a happy life and that she has worth. Kudou has had other engagments in the past, but they had all just tried to use him, and eventually they all left him since they couldn't get what they wanted out of him. This made it difficult for Kudou to place his trust in someone, but when he meets Miyo, she doesn't try to use him. And instead, the two of them are able to develop a loving bond. This isn't all of what the anime is about though, there's a compleling story going on throughout all this. I won't spoil anything, but throughout the anime there's a mystery. This mystery is really exciting but also sort of leaves a sense of dread since I really don't want anything to happen to Miyo or Kudou. With all of these elements combined, it creates a really emotional, compelling and sweet story. The characters form connections, Miyo faces trauma, she learns of care and the value that she has. I really, really love it. The animation is gorgeous, the colors are so pretty and soft most of the time, but when something needs to be exciting or grim, the colors able to covey that as well. The animation is smooth and really well done, and the same goes for the sound. In all, I think My Happy Marriage is amazing. Miyo's journey of learning about love and life is incredibly delightful.
