These two eighties anime movies were both directed by Mamoru Oshii. Both are largely serious films inundated with dream imagery. Beautiful Dreamer is more normal and contains quite a bit of humour - while Angel's Egg contains little more than a handful of lines of dialogue - but fans of Oshii's films should try both.

If you are a fan of Mamoru Oshii and his famous Anime work for the thing about Urusei Yatsura Beautiful Dreamer and Angel's Egg is probably made by the same director Mamoru Oshii himself for Urusei Yatsura Beautiful Dreamer is probably more of one of the Urusei Yatsura anime films because Urusei Yatsura Beautiful Dreamer is a follow up to its predecessor follow up sequel Urusei Yatsura Only You but for Urusei Yatsura Beautiful Dreamer it was released in 1984 but for Angel's Egg however it was released in 1985 which is within a year after Urusei Yatsura Beautiful Dreamer was released that makes sense.

Both 'Castle of Cagliostro' and 'Beautiful Dreamer' are films based on a popular TV/manga franchise by directors who subsequently became famous in their own rights - Hayao Miyazaki and Mamoru Oshii, respectively. Each film has that director push the franchise in a direction similar to his later pictures - 'Castle of Cagliostro' downplays Lupin's lothario nature and gives us a typically Miyazaki heroine, while 'Beautiful Dreamer' sidesteps Urusei Yatsura's comedy to give us a brooding, philosophical work that is very Oshii in feel. If you enjoyed one for being an early work of promise for an anime director, you may also enjoy the other.

So for the reason about this anime recommendation feel between Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro and Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer is that Lupin the Third The Castle of Cagliostro is directed by Hayao Miyazaki but for Urusei Yatsura Beautiful Dreamer is directed by Mamoru Oshii because these two Anime movies is for those who have seen both the anime TV series such as Lupin the Third and Urusei Yatsura in the similarity between the connection of anime movies.

When you take the cast of a beloved series, and place them in a unique situation, that feels right out of a Twilight Zone episode you get these two movies.

The animation is higher caliber, the story is complex and tight and there is a mystery in both.

Do you need to see the series to understand them?  Not totally. Would it help? Kinda, BUT

Only in the case for Suzumiya. In the case of Urusei Yatsura, just understand it was a much zanier comedy than the movie beautiful Dreamer is. This is why the incidents seem so odd to the cast.

If you watched either Urusei Yatsura Beautiful Dreamer or The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya because those anime movies are alot very familiar and its own little Twilight Zone feel on how seriousness and Melancholy feels in both Urusei Yatsura Beautiful Dreamer and The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya it's probably one of those like anime movies that helped if you have seen The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya anime series or the Urusei Yatsura anime series it's probably part of the recommendation for both of these anime movies in general especially the ones that are based on the manga as well as when it was adapted it into an anime series in general both of those movies are probably very similar to the other anime movie in general.

Both are movies about dreams (and not only), created by famous directors (Mamoru Oshii and Satoshi Kon). They are quite different when it comes to story & atmosphere, yet their dream settings and general irreality of things still make them a fine match.

Twilight Q

Twilight Q

From the depths of the human imagination comes Twilight Q, a Twilight Zone-style set of two tales based upon the paranormal and supernatural. In one story, Mayumi and Kiwako find a camera that supposedly came from the future, with very interesting film and already-taken pictures inside. Secondly, a tale by Mamoro Oshii which chronicles a strange occurance of planes turning into carp in mid-air, much to the dismay of private investigators and the media alike.

The second episode of Twilight Q and Beautiful Dreamer are both Mamoru Oshii's works that execute essentially similar scenarios to describe our life as a recurring dream. Both are thought-provoking & surreal to the core.
