These could almost be set in the same universe. A world of amazing technology, but where human life seems to hold little value.

Both Mardock Scramble and GitS paint a bleak view of our future, were transhumanism and technological advances do very little to alleviate the suffering for those at the bottom levels of society. Both movies feature a female main character who are 'rebuilt' using technology, and the stories revolve around police officers working a case.

Both are incredibly visually appealing movies that deftly creates a compelling future, and even though they were created 15 years apart they still have a similar feel as far as aesthetics are concerned. Fans of either would do well to check out the other.

They both exist in a dark future where technological modification flurishes. Both focus on the struggles of modified female leads trying to define their humanity and the value of life in society.

This feels almost like a combination of the gritty complex beauraucratic, violent, philosophic world of GiTS or more so Gits:SAC and the more soul searching symbolic/personal journey world of Ergo Proxy.

The technology, especially the technology of one of the main characters is in some significant respects very advanced compared to Gits, but the nature of it in the society is similar.

If you like cyberpunk and liked one of these films then there is a good chance you will like the other. This applies to all three Mardock films too. They are quite different from each other once you get past the setting but both offer wonderful cyberpunk, cyborg goodness.

Booth of these movies feature a mostly cyborg female main character in a good cyberpunk setting. Mardock focuses a bit more on the action than Ghost in the Shell does.

They have similar themes. A grirl is revives as a cyborg by a doctor, and finds herself in a life and death struggle against monsterous beings.

Dystopian cyberpunk stories with female protagonists who were near death or already died once and had their bodies restored/rebuilt for a second chance in life. They confront the bad guys while also attempting to cope with the cruelty of the world they've been forcefully thrown into.

PSYCHO-PASS

PSYCHO-PASS

In the future, a system called Sibyl presides over the country and provides order to every facet of life. It dictates which job fields citizens should go into based on aptitude tests, and can even read each resident's mental state and predict which ones are likely to commit crimes in the future. Fresh from exams, Akane Tsunemori is beginning her career as an Inspector, a specialized police officer who works to apprehend these latent criminals and stop crimes before they happen. But not all that get caught are eliminated or jailed, some join the police force as Enforcers to provide insight into criminals’ minds, and Akane is warned not to get too close to them, as they're considered little more than hunting dogs. Though skeptical of this advice, and Sibyl's judgement, Akane is determined to work together with her Enforcers to protect the peace of her city and its inhabitants.

Riveting thrillers, both of these works will keep you on the edge of your seat. Both pertain to justice and crime in a future world where corruption is the norm. Both of these anime contain beautiful visuals and also graphic violence. If you liked one you will definitely like the other.

Psycho-Pass and Mardock Scramble are both fresh and stylish entries in the cyberpunk genre. The three-part Mardock Scramble movie series is definitely more style than substance, but it is entertaining style; it is a pleasure to look at. They are similar when it comes to investigation, with Psycho-Pass definitely having a police procedural feel to it. Both also feature handguns that are more than simple firearms, but rather are compelling aspects of both shows and in Mardock Scramble very much a character. For all of Mardock Scramble's style, there is little it does to bring anything astoundingly new, or add depth to the cyberpunk genre in general. I'm happy to have watched it once, but I don't see myself returning to it. On the flip-side, Psycho-Pass is a series any cyberpunk fan will likely want to re-watch and display proudly as a part of their anime collection.

Pinocchio: The Series

Pinocchio: The Series

One day, the lonely woodworker Gepetto fetches a log and carves it into the shape of a boy; he names it Pinocchio and promises to treat it as his own son.  Gepetto's wish soon comes true when a fairy turns Pinocchio into a boy - albeit still in his wooden form - and gives a cricket the power to speak in order to keep track of the newly-created child. Pinocchio wants badly to become a real boy by whatever means necessary, often becoming selfish in the process and leaving his fairy benefactor to punish him by turning parts of his body into trees. In addition, the townsfolk take advantage of Pinocchio's naivety at near every turn, selling him as a talking tree, kidnapping and forcing him to perform as a circus freak, and tricking him into giving up his money - amongst other things. Can Pinocchio survive these harsh lessons and become a real boy?

Well, if Kite and Battle Angel Alita had a child, the results would be Mardock Scramble.

In essence, both animes revolve around female protagonists, with backgrounds of tragedy and constant sexual abuse/rape, who eventually becomes gun wielding anti-heroes, in a sense.

Beware, both animes are rated mature for a reason, and are quite hard to sit through without feeling a sense of moral disgust. Expect to see gruesome rape scenes (Mardock is toned down though), many mature references to sexual abuse, and finally,  gory action scenes.

Both Ghost in the Shell: Arise and the Mardock Scramble movies provides an interesting cyberpunk world to delve into. Both series also feature the origin stories of heavily cyborged female protagonists, and are excellent pick-ups even without any prior knowledge of the source material. Highly recommended! :)
