Ayakashi: Japanese Classic Horror

Ayakashi: Japanese Classic Horror

The dark and brooding Ayakashi is composed of three horror stories: the narration of a young woman named Oiwa who was abandoned and betrayed by the one she truly loved, leading her to curse all who stood in her way; a story of two star-crossed lovers – a human and a forgotten god – and their struggle to have a future together; and the tale of an evil and malicious demon who is haunting and murdering a family for unknown purposes. Though different in animation style and tone, each story shares a similar theme: the darkness of the human heart.

Hell Girl and Ayakashi are must sees for fans of the horror/mystery genre. Both anime will leave you amazed at not only the beauty of the animation, sound and scenery, but also horrified at the ugliness of man and the choices he makes.

The second season of Jigoku Shoujo retains the same dark and moody elements of the original JG even as it explores the interaction between Ai and those who seek her services. This forging of bonds between doomed supernatural females and humans is also very present in the latter episodes of Vampire Princess Miyu. Jigoku Shoujo Futamori reveals a deeper kinship between Ai and Miyu, firmly establishing them as kindred spirits.

Both Death note and Jigoku Shoujo Futakomori share extremely similar themes. "killing" someone by writing their name down somewhere. In Death Note the name is written on a note and the person dies in the way specified, in Jigoku Shoujo typing someones name into a website will let you send them to hell.

Unlike Death Note, Jigoku Shoujo doesn't follow the same one person who does the writing, rather following the character who "ferries" the souls to hell.

Both of these shows feature people who may seem normal on the surface, but act outside the realm of normal human behavior to perform groteque acts.  Both shows are episodic, telling a new story every episode as they explore the depths of human insanity.  Each show uses tools from the underworld to help bring the evil doers to justice.  Hell Girl is more focused on revenge, while MTNN is more about Neuro's obsession with solving mysteries, but in terms of how they explore the outer reaches of human nature and people's motives for their evil deeds, if you liked one, I definitely think you'll like the other.

If you liked the creepyness of the lovable Ai's work, you would most likely enjoy Ghost Hunt. Ghost hunt does a great job at portraying close to real situations of paranormals and the like, while maintaining a decent story with a good share of cutesy, and sometimes spine chilling, moments.

Death Parade

Death Parade

When two people die at the same time, they're sent to a place that's neither heaven nor hell: a lavish bar between worlds where the stakes are high and the rules are simple: if you win you live again, if you die you're gone for good. Decim is the bartender charged with serving the souls who enter Quindecim. He may make a mean cocktail, but his true profession is to play the role of arbiter: a judge who determines whether or not a soul is worthy of reincarnation. To aid in his judgment, the bar's patrons are forced to play simple games laced with sadistic twists designed to bring their true natures to light. To Decim, judgment has always been black and white - that is until he meets a mysterious young woman whose fate seems impossible to decide. His indecision shakes the very foundation of the games and raises the biggest question of all: who is fit to judge the dead?

In both entities some entities act as judges or executioners, as emissaries of hell.

The anime will be in an omnibus short format that will tell stories of the strange and bizarre in our world, including UFOs, cryptids, curses, ancient civilizations, supernatural powers, spiritual experiences, bizarre cases, different dimensions, and urban legends, told in a picture show style. The anime seeks to evoke the retro atmosphere of pulp horror stories that were popular in the 60s and 70s in magazines.
