Really very similar, and both pretty good. Surprised no one has made this recommendation yet. Cute girls sweating a lot while hitting balls over a net with lots of yuri subtext. Also both shows have very distinct couples rather than a mass of possible pairings that all sort of work. You basically know from the opening credits of both shows which characters are paired together.

Also both shows do a good job with the sports anime tournament thing, they both have a good degree of tension and detail that makes these kind of shows work.

They're both ecchi sports anime where the main girl ropes her eventual partner into taking up the sport again. In both cases, the second girl (Misa in Kandagawa Jet Girls and Higa in Harukana Recieve) had to quit their respective sport for personal reasons, only to rekindle their love and passion for their sport thank to their enthusiastic and opportunistic partner.

Unfortunately, the one time he was able to pull enough players together to form a team in junior high, they were completely trashed in their first and only match against a team led by up-and-coming setter Tobio Kageyama. Now, enrolled at the same high school where his idol once played, Shoyo's finally going to get his shot to join and play with a top team.
