Kaguya-sama: Love Is War OVA

Jan 11, 2023

Definitely a bit of a whiplashy OVA, they throw you right into the explicit bits at the very beginning and then finishing the episode with wholesome rice cooking...Kinda seemed backwards if anything. Characters lose their personality to facilitate the lewdness. I don’t think there’s any Easter eggs or plot points here so is probably skip-able for most. Animation seemed slightly worse than normal for the rest of the show.

The Dog of Flanders Movie

Jan 3, 2023

✦ spoiler free review ✦ You see this movie and think, oh it's a sad dog movie? I know what's going to happen in a sad dog movie(because basically they are all exactly the same plot of course) But no this movie isn't even really about the dog. The dog is like that side character friend in movies that’s like nice and save the protagonist from something once or twice but doesn’t actually matter much to the plot. The dog was just bait and you fell for it, now you are strapped in for barely a kid's movie(like seriously I'm not sure many parents would watch this with their young kids in... See full review

JR Nishi Nihon: Summer Train!

Dec 30, 2022

Pretty mid train commercial, think you can do better JR. There’s CN/CP commerical’s that have made me feel more and they don’t even transport humans….

Just a simple train journey plot, no development, no inspiring narration, or meotional connection with characters.

Earwig and the Witch

Dec 29, 2022

I feel as this movie didn't get a fair shake. Critics saw that it wasn't basically a CG version of the modern ghibli art style and just discarded it automatically, with everyone else following suit. Yes the art style isn't a masterful work of both simplicity and beauty often attributed to ghibli. Rather like Ocean Waves, it is  departure, however I do think it's more interesting than the majority of mainstream CG animation, being much more expressive and playful. More similar to indie styles, almost like CG claymation.  The characters might not be the most original, but you could probably say... See full review

Dawid Podsiadło: Let You Down

Dec 10, 2022

Basically what I'd imagine from hearing the phrase "Anime Music video" A short story shown through the progress of the song, with engaging characters and emotional weight. Refreshing change from the typical use of animation as just repetitive 'cool' visuals.  Better experience after watching the Edgerunner's anime.

Weathering With You

Dec 9, 2022

Bringing unoffensive, broad audience appeal, linear story telling from western animation to anime. It feels a bit like modern Disney it it’s rehashing of old ideas propelled by reputation and aesthetics over any really creative story telling or innovation. It’s fine for a director to have consistent tropes in his movies but it also requires a higher bar of execution to not feel unsatisfying and tired...I would describe it as junk food anime: quite pretty but forgettable.

I Want to Eat Your Pancreas

Feb 2, 2019

It’s  basically  the cheap thrills equivalent of a heart throb. Yea it does the job, but it doesn’t bring anything new, the writing isn’t particularly inventful, and the execution is good but not masterful. Definitely worth the watch, but no reason to rush to. Story: 2 main protagonists, one has a messed up pancreas, and the other is a dopey useless guy. Wow, what do you think will happen, well yea there’s a few twists but the effect would be the same without them. So you can basically guess the basic plot within the first seven minutes.   There’s nothing... See full review

Fate/Zero Remix

Jan 21, 2019

In short it does its job as a recap, if it has been awhile since you've seen the first season before starting the second season of fate/zero, or took you awhile to watch the first season. This will definitely refresh you on the important plot points and dialogue. To be frank the first season has a lot of filler, there definitely isn't an each distribution between the two seasons. So one could probably watch just this instead  of the first season and still understand what's going on in the second, if one didn't have the patience to sit through the first season. Although being an adequate recap, it's... See full review

Warm, Winter Canada

Jan 12, 2019

Don't get me wrong I love Canada and all, but there isn't much here, even compared to other anime commercials it's a bit lacking in the story department, or general engagement. It's just a generic young couple (although they are like super cute) that visits famous places in Canada with pretty background art, and decent music. The secondary characters also felt somewhat contrived weirdly similar to many of the live action tourism ads I’ve seen.

Suntory Minami Alps no Tennen Mizu

Jan 10, 2019

They're 15 second Suntory commercials with the characters and music from Kimi no na wa, I mean they are decent commercials, and kinda made me want to buy that water. But there isn't really a reason to purposely watch them even in comparison with other commercials...

Hotarubi no Mori e

Jan 8, 2019

In short this anime is an exercise in doing the least to achieve the most, basically using the least amount of time to tell the story coherently,  without major plot holes, and the least number of characters without feeling that the protagonists exist in a vacuum. While still developing a meaningful and engaging story about these two individuals, where their motivations and emotions are easy to grasp without being too straightforward. Even in the  absence of facial expression in some cases. Most aspects are very praiseworthy indeed. The only area where my feelings become mixed is the end, one... See full review

Laid-Back Camp

Apr 1, 2018

The Great outdoors are just perfect for the CGDCT genre,  I'm surprised there isn't many shows like this about other outdoor activities, they'd be so cute >_<. Maybe I'm just bias because I partake in outdoorsy activities regularly, but this seems to be one of better shows in this genre.  Story: I mean it's CGDCT after all, so you can't expect there to be much complexity, it's just a slow paced collection of camping trips strung together. Although good I think there were a few opportunities to have interesting sub-plots. I'm quite surprised by how accurate the camping related content... See full review

A Silent Voice

Mar 31, 2018

Disclaimer: if you are a super critical analyzier of anime, or a manga elitist (just because it disregards the manga doesn't mean it can't be good in its own right ok!!) you probably aren't going to like this movie that much, but I personally am not one of those people...I judge my anime solely with my heart, and honestly this is one of the most heartfelt movies I have ever seen. The emotional pain experienced is only surpassed by guilt or heartbreak itself. In a way it's just a coming of age story, but instead of the "run-of-the-mill version" it focuses around two characters that are emotionally... See full review

Your Light: Kase-san and Morning Glories

Mar 30, 2018

Lacked the emotional power a short should have in this genre, felt more like a summary, almost like a movie trailer. The characters and story is what I expected, edging towards generic, but well done. The music was sweet and fit the story well, but the strongest aspect of this short was definitely the animation style, with a watercolor style background, reasonablely good lightning and no cheap eyes, it was pretty much on-point.

Supercell: Perfect Day

Mar 30, 2018

So when's the anime series coming out? /s...it really feels like it could either be an anime theme song, or the closing out sequence of a movie. A short and sweet montage, with a surprising amount of emotion.  Animation quality is high, good lighting, and nice scenes, but lacks a degree of "crispness". Although it's impossible to really understand the characters in such a short amount of time, and with no dialogue. The quality of the story still gives them a bit of personality and feeling, and really makes you want more! TL;DR why can't there be a full series based on this music video?

Neon Genesis IMPACTS

Mar 30, 2018

A decent web show overall but not a real stand alone piece, just a very small tangential  portion of the whole franchise (however it isn't really related to the rest of the story either) . No continuous storyline, it's a short sincere scene followed by a montage sequence set to respectable music. The background animation quality and lighting is high quality, but the character animation is just average. Overall it's worth the small time investment.
