Banana Fish is an extremly good manga, and the anime is even better. The characters and plot are just so amazing and it's a real emotional story. You'd probably like it.

I find them a little stereotyped and cliched and I prefer anime/manga with a more realistic representation of homosexuality and LGBT community :))
