Glad to know we agree. I get why you're frustrated. I think what you're complaining about has two aspects. On the one hand, there are lots of people who simply like the action genre and good designs/visuals and don't care much about the plot or characters, I mean they're just in it for the entertainment. And that's ok; everyone has preferences. I'm the opposite: action scenes bore me to death and my mind switches off when there's too much of it. I value character development, a well-conceived and narrated story and emotional involvement above all else. And then there's all the kids who started watching anime recently and kind of get enthusiastic about stuff because they're lacking a valid comparison. Several times now I've gone back to anime that when I first saw them years ago seemed great, only to realize that, actually, they're not. But we've got the reviews to help us out. When I'm checking out a new anime, I usually skim through all the reviews and when I read something that seems interesting written by someone who's on my same wavelength, that's when I decide to see an anime.
