While Manhole would probably be enjoyed by a slightly older audience than Shiki, both are really dark and creepy horror/mystery series about very strange infections/diseases and the characters who try to get rid of them.

Gyo

Gyo

Okinawa was the first affected; swarms of fish with spindly legs rose from the sea, carrying with them an overpowering stench of death. Kaori and Tadashi find themselves in the midst of the incident and quickly travel to Tokyo to ask for Tadashi's scientist uncle's help - but even Tokyo isn't safe for long, and sea creatures aren't the only beings affected by the horror...

Gyo and Shiki are manga about dead things walking around, but are much much more interesting than most things about dead things walking around.

Just trust me on this one.

I Am a Hero

I Am a Hero

The zombie apocalypse has never been more surreal! A mentally unhinged manga artist witnesses the beginning of a zombie outbreak in Tokyo, and he's certain of only two things: he's destined to be the city's hero, and he possesses something very rare in Japan--an actual firearm!

Although they start off slowly (and I mean reeeeally slowly), once they get going and the protagonists FINALLY figure out what the hell is going on, I am a Hero and Shiki are engrossing horror stories filled with all sorts of carnage and the undead.
