History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi

History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi

Shirihama Kenichi is a weak scaredy-cat, and his status as the karate club's punching bag has earned him the name of ‘Weak Legs'. One day Kenichi meets Miu and, impressed by her skill after she effortlessly throws him to the ground, he follows her to the Ryouzanpaku dojo. There he finds five great masters of martial arts, and driven by his desire to become stronger, he begs them to accept him as their student - though it won't be easy. Kenichi endures harsh training (and injury) from Akisame - the philosophizing Jujitsu master; Apachai - the Muay Thai ‘God of Death'; Kensei - the ecchi Chinese Kempo Master; and Shigure - the weapons prodigy. Finally after proving his determination, he is accepted by Shio - the 100-dan Karate Master, who had initially wanted nothing to do with him. Now Kenichi walks the long and arduous path to becoming a master himself, all whilst trying to protect those he cares about from anyone who would dare to harm them.

While HSDK focuses on marital arts and Buyuden on boxing, both are about a beginner attempting to become stronger and more powerful. Both also feature a male protagonist whose abilities are far outstripped by the girl he has a crush on. If you enjoy either aspect in one of these manga, then check out the other.

Teppu

Teppu

Natsuo Ishidou is an exceptionally tall and naturally talented high school girl. She manages to excel at whatever she tries her hand at, but her constant success without the need for hard work or determination has left her feeling lonely and embittered. That is all set to change, however, when the teen meets perky mixed martial artists Yuzuko and Ringi. After taking an instant dislike to them and becoming jealous of their talents, Natsuo believes that she’s finally found something to which she can - and must - give her all. With two strong rivals to aspire to, are mixed martial arts the one thing that can fill the void in Natsuo’s life once and for all?

While both of these series have distinct differences, essentially they are both about exceptionally talented youths finding a combat sport they enjoy and must work at. While their motivations for fighting may be different, if you enjoy the hard-working and competitive aspects of one, they try the other.

All-Rounder Meguru

While both of these are somewhat different, they have a similar vibe to them as both focus on competitive fighting sports with a fairly weak protagonist rising through the ranks. While Buyuden focuses on boxing and Meguru on mixed martial arts, if you enjoyed one then it's worth checking out the other.
