While it has an interesting premise under the surface, a slow-burn start and an astonishingly abrupt ending combine to make this one leave a relatively low emotional feel for an otherwise decent work. Story - The MC's cousin comes to live with her in the city, and much to her surprise, her cousin is not the boy she remembers from her youth. What follows is a fairly complicated and slow-paced development of a sort of love-polygon as the MC, the cousin, and a handful of important characters in their high school all pursue various love interests, most of which only last a few chapters before turning to their next romance partner. I won't spoil the surprise, but suffice to say that the ending comes quite abruptly and derails a lot of the story, leaving more questions and dissatisfaction than answers. 5/10; The love-polygon was relatively interesting, and I did enjoy the core premise of the surprise, but I really dislike the specific type of ending the author decided to use. Art - Very prototypical of early 2000's character designs. Not much background art in most panels, but the panels with it are well crafted and visually pleasing. Overall just above average, really. My main gripe is that several of the characters were similar enough in their designs that it was difficult to tell who was whom during a few scenes, made all the worse by the fact that at least one character kept changing their hairdo. 6/10; Aesthetically pleasing, if a bit hard to follow at times. Characters - As you'd expect with a story like this, the strong suit is the character writing - when the story is basically just "people fall in love", the part that needs to be engaging is the people. This one is competent at achieiving that goal, presenting believable characters who show good emotional range and who make beleivable mistakes and decisions. It's nowhere near perfect, and I feel the author could have used the space of their chapters more effectively to convey several things that were sort of back-loaded at the end, but I don't consider that a dealbreaker. 7/10; Rough around the edges, but overall satisfying. Overall - I have to wonder if the general flow of the work was an intended vision from the beginning, or if the Author was somehow compelled to rush out the ending. I could see it go either way, but neither is particularly encouraging. The pacing was almost a bit too slow at the start, and far too fast near the end. I also have some general discomfort at how some of the subject matter was presented, though not only was it a different social climate at the time it was written, I also acknowledge that some of the phrasing I took issue with could be down to the translation I was reading. 6/10; Generally speaking, I enjoyed it well enough, though I doubt this one will stick in memory terribly long.
