Hi all,

We've added a another substantial amount of new anime and manga tags recently. As a reminder, you can post suggestions for new tags, as well as anime/manga that are missing specific tags, in the tag section of the forum. Help out by posting missing ones in the above section! Some of the tags are still a bit thin.

Also remember that you can "love" or "hate" tags using the anime tag browse or manga tag browse pages - you can then filter our watch online homepage by tags that you like, and personal suggestions take the tags into account as well.

And remember that you can check out recently added tags anytime by using the "date added" sort on the tags page.

This time, we focused our efforts on sub-categorizations for isekais, high stakes games (more to come later with these), manhua, and a selection of random ones.

Overpowered Main Characters
ANIME | MANGA

These anime have overpowered protagonists, or overpowered main antagonists. Overpowered anime characters easily rise above the conflicts of their story. When competition is involved, they are typically undefeatable, using their intelligence, fighting prowess or pure raw power to win with ease, always staying ten steps ahead. They might be overpowered because of Cheats.

Cheats
ANIME | MANGA

Characters in these anime have gained a way to cheat the system through fantastical means, whether the cheat breaks the rules of a game world, the real world, or an isekai fantasy world. Examples include: a game-based levelling system that appears to only them in the real world; finding or being given a game-breaking item; acquiring an ability to level up faster than usual, or to instantly access new skills; or having access to knowledge from a past life through Reincarnation. Special, overpowered abilities aren’t considered cheats if they are game-sanctioned - for those anime, see Overpowered Main Characters.

Trapped in a Video Game
ANIME | MANGA

In these anime, characters are stuck in a video game or a Virtual Reality world. Typically it’s a High Stakes Game in which players can’t leave until they beat the game, and in extreme cases, dying in the game means they die in real life.

Demon King
ANIME | MANGA

A Demon King is the main character of these anime. Typically from Hell, this Demon Lord may still live in his fiery realm, or may have travelled to the human world to live and work. Typically male, Demon Kings can sometimes be female.

Summoned into Another World
ANIME | MANGA

These isekai anime feature characters who have been summoned into another world. The characters might be summoned heroes who are needed to fight the locals' battles, or are would-be familiars, or were summoned for some other purpose.

Weak to Strong
ANIME | MANGA

Characters in these anime are weak, but through determination, hard work, and rigorous training, they become strong and masters of their field, whether it's martial arts, a job class in a game, or a hobby such as sports. These protagonists might even become powerful enough to be Overpowered Main Characters.

Apocalypse
ANIME | MANGA

In these anime, an apocalypse has just occurred, threatening the world with extinction. Mankind might be under attack from Zombies, Insects, or Monsters. Or, the apocalypse may have been triggered by a Pandemic, a Natural Disaster, or another cause. Unlike Post-apocalyptic anime where society struggles to rebuild, characters in these anime focus on Survival, or on understanding and containing the disaster.

Xianxia
ANIME | MANGA

Xianxia (仙侠小说) is a genre in Chinese literature developed from Wuxia, and translates to "immortal hero". These manga, typically Chinese Manhua, feature characters that Cultivate Qi, typically to achieve immortality, unlike their Wuxia counterparts that use cultivation to simply grow stronger. Xianxia stories feature Fantasy elements such as Magic, Demons, Gods, and immortal beings.

Wuxia
MANGA (will add as an anime tag if there are any candidates)

Wuxia (武侠) is one of the oldest genres in Chinese literature, and translates to "martial arts chivalry". These manga, typically Chinese manhua, feature heroes who fight against evil. Wuxia stories can typically be thought of as the Chinese equivalent of The Odyssey, taking place in ancient China instead of ancient Greece, blending concepts of heroes vs evil, relationships between humans and gods, mythology, Cultivation of Qi, Magic, and a heavy emphasis on Martial Arts.

Cultivation
MANGA (will add as an anime tag if there are any candidates)

Cultivation (修真) is a Taoist concept that describes extending one's lifespan through practicing martial and mystical arts, with the goal of cultivating Qi: the spiritual life force. Cultivation is a common theme in both Wuxia and Xianxia stories, with one key difference: Xianxia stories typically focus on cultivation for the purpose of achieving immortality.

Battle Royale
ANIME | MANGA

These anime are like Hunger Games: a group of players are pitted against each other (PVP) until only one remains. Battle Royale-style anime typically feature a High Stakes Game that's Play or Die: a battle to the death.

PVP
ANIME | MANGA

These High Stakes Games anime are PVP: player versus player. The game rules dictate that one or more players are the enemy, pitting the characters against each other. PVP anime are often a Battle Royale setup where players must kill each other off until only one remains. Not to be confused with PVE anime (player versus environment).

PVE
ANIME | MANGA

These High Stakes Games anime are PVE: player versus environment. The game rules dictate that players don't battle each other, they must instead fight a common enemy or deal with an external force. Not to be confused with PVP anime (player versus player).

Christmas
ANIME | MANGA

These anime take place during the Christmas season or focus on the holiday. Common themes include finding and exchanging gifts, Santa Claus, Christmas Eve festivities, or other topics related to the season.

Valentine's Day
ANIME | MANGA

These anime focus on Valentine's Day, a holiday for lovers celebrated on February 14th. Common themes include Love Confessions, going on romantic dates, and giving chocolates or gifts.

Zoo
ANIME | MANGA

These anime take place in zoo, whether it's functioning or abandoned. Common themes include animal caretaking, zoologists and research, and guests making trips to the zoo.

Veterinarians
MANGA

These manga feature veterinarians: medical professionals who treat sick and injured animals. In Fantasy manga, they may treat mythical beasts or other fantastical creatures.

Writers
ANIME | MANGA

Writers have a career or hobby related to literary works. They might be an author that works in the Manga Industry or Novel Industry, or they might write poetry, draft news articles, or simply write for fun.

Badminton
ANIME | MANGA

Badminton is the focus of these anime. Training and competing in tournaments or championships are common themes in sports titles, as well as individual or team spirit, or being an underdog who goes against the odds to succeed.

Doujinshi

The tag formerly known as Doujinshi has been changed to Doujinshi Industry. There is now a different Doujinshi tag, used for manga of type doujinshi (as we will add selected ones).

Based on a Picture Book
ANIME | MANGA

These anime are based on a picture book: a book for children that contains many illustrations.

Thanks, as always, for your continued support of Anime-Planet! Make sure you tell your friends about the awesome new tags here! :drinking:

DOUJINSHI, guehehe... Not that kind...

But seriously, glad that it now exists.

Really good and useful tags. Also glad that doujinshi are coming in the near future. I guess semi-official ones and not just all?

We're going to deal with them on a case by case basis and the guidance will likely change over time. The rough initial idea is:

- If there's a physical or digital volume release, likely add it
- No "challenge" webtoons will be added unless they get re-released as a full series
- If it's a famous person (ie Yoshitoshi Abe), potentially add those

With volume you mean something like tankoubon? If yes then that sounds like a reasonable way to sort out the shovel-ware.

Right. Or a legitimate digital volume (for example, a compiled collection with a cover on Amazon JP to buy)

New isekai tags and subtags? Wuxia and Xianxia tags? This is a nice batch of tags that have came out.

Thanks for the reply, I only asked cause this anime felt episodic, https://www.anime-planet.com/anime/durarara
Although it doesn't have the episodic tag.
I personally wouldn't agree, because in the end it all leads to a greater narrative. Even if it doesn't feel like it in the beginning.

But if you have suggestions regarding tags, then this threads would be right:

This is an announcement thread totally unrelated to "episodic". Please use the threads Shin mentioned.
