The film beautifully captures the essence of childhood wonder and curiosity. It doesn't rely heavily on a traditional plot but instead focuses on the sisters' interactions with the magical creatures they encounter in the nearby forest, particularly the lovable Totoro. While the narrative may lack complexity, its innocence and charm make it a heartwarming and unforgettable experience.

Animation (9/10): Studio Ghibli's animation in "My Neighbor Totoro" is a visual treat. Sound (7/10): The film's soundtrack is delightful and complements the story well. The music captures the playfulness and magic of childhood while also evoking a sense of nostalgia. The use of sound effects, such as the gentle rustling of leaves or the chirping of insects, adds to the immersive experience of being in a rural setting. While not particularly groundbreaking, the sound design effectively enhances the film's atmosphere.

To me, this has to be one of the most overrated films of all time. The only thing I really like about the film is how the animation is beautiful for 1988 and the Totoro scenes. Now, let's get into the negatives. While I do love slice of life and how it takes place in a forest, this film pretty much doesn't have a plot, at all. Characters aren't as that interesting either especially how Mei is kind of annoying but Satsuke does have some good quirks. What's worse about the film is that even though it's called "My Neighbor Totoro", Totoro didn't appear until 30 minutes of the film. Heck, he barely even appeared at all.

-Story-

The weakest link in the movie My Neighbor Totoro is definately the story. For the first half of the movie, I was completely bored out of my mind. I don't mind a little slice of life anime, but it either has to win me over with humor or charm, which My Neighbor Totoro, does not deliver on. However, things get interesting towards the second half of the movie, and the second half ultimately saves the film for me. The story that was set up so boringly in the first half of the film comes alive and takes on a form of its own and it tugs at the heartstrings. If they made the first half of the film more interesting, then I would have given a much highere score.

-Animation-

The art in My Neighbor Totoro is absolutely phenominal. It looks absolutely gorgeous, and it transforms backgrounds into environments in which the characters immerse into. The animation was clean, and the designs where great.

-Characters-

This is definately one of the strongest things in My Neighbor Totoro. The characters are very lovable and they can be related too. They are very fun characters to watch.

-Overall-

A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and unfortunatley, My Neighbor Totoro has a weak link in the 1st half of the movie's story. If it wasn't for that then It was really an amazing film.
