Black Rock Shooter TV

Sep 28, 2013

Spoilers ahead. Jus' sayin'.
Story: Story-wise, the anime follows two seperate worlds that each have an emotional tether to each other. The main world is about a middle schooler named Mato who is trying to be a good basketball player in her school's sports club and make new friends, especially with a girl named Yomi. Middle school drama ensues -- Yomi's other jealous friend tries to get in between Yomi and Mato, and it spirals from there. It's typical young person drama -- people want certain friends all to themselves or want attention from a friend that seems to be constantly busy. And there is a... See full review

Samurai Champloo

Mar 11, 2012

I don't know how many people reading this grew up on late-night anime from Adult Swim, the block of programming on Cartoon Network. This, for me, was one of the big ones — right after Full Metal Alchemist and Inuyasha, I'd say. By the time Death Note rolled around I was already on non-dubbed stuff, but Samurai Champloo was at the height of my on-television anime watching. This anime may or may not be tainted with nostalgia. I'll try to remove it from the review. Story: The story is just as all over the place as the three main characters. It follows them as they bounce around the whole of Japan, two... See full review

Je t'aime

Jan 31, 2012

It's a twelve minute... movie, I guess, so I'm not going to bother writing a full review rating everything like I usually do. A dog is plagued by memories of people who are long dead... in fact, mysteriously, every person ever is dead. The dog is the only living thing left on the planet, and just wants someone to throw a ball. The anime relies on visuals and flashbacks into the dogs memories (not important things like how the world got that way, but memories of a ball in a meadow). The background music is touching and the sound effects are great, but there are no voice actors to speak of. It's an anime... See full review

Interlude

Jan 31, 2012

Story: Dude... he has no name, so we're just calling him Dude here... goes about normal life. You see him hanging out at school with his best friend and almost-girlfriend Tama. You see Dude and Tama being taunted by Tama's friends. You see him going to and from school on the train... you see him wig out and start witnessing weird little shadow creatures climbing out of the seams of some horror movie and into his own, to kill or torture people he knows before it all goes back to normal in the blink of an eye. What. He starts seeing a strange girl whenever he sees this stuff, and desparately wants to talk... See full review

Ebichu

Jan 26, 2012

Story: There isn't much of one, outside from Ebichu the house-keeping hamster making observations about her owner's sex life and making dirty jokes. There is a constant of her master dealing with being unmarried and her boyfriend being a useless, cheating bum... and there is the guy that is in love with Ebichu... but it's not really a plot, just how the characters interact with each other. The plot is mostly sex jokes. Lots and lots of sex jokes. Animation: I can draw better than Ebichu's art style, to be perfectly honest. Anyone with the basic knowledge of human anatomy could. The animation is... See full review

Welcome to the NHK!

Jan 26, 2012

Story: Satou is a total shut-in, a barely functional hikkimori. This is a stereotype that is being developed more and more into animes, partially because more and more of them are popping up in Japan in real life. NEETs, their abbreviation for not being employed or enrolled in school, (Not in Education, Employment, or Training), are a huge issue in Japan. So our main character is one of those, combined with being afraid to go outside... except to buy food and every week, to buy food so that he doesn't starve. He lives on an allowance from his parents and lives next door to his otaku best friend. He meets... See full review

Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin

Jan 7, 2012

Story: It starts off with six teenagers being inducted into a boy's juvenile prison around ten years after World War II in Japan. They join a guy who has already been there for two years and share his cell. After some initial hostility, they all become friends and together survive the extreme harshness of the juvenile school. And when I say 'extreme harshness,' I mean crippling beatings, forced starvation, and sexual advances by an old creepy guy. So without giving anything away, the first half is how they get through all of that in the juvenile prison and enter the real world, with strong aspirations to... See full review

Durarara!!

Dec 14, 2011

Story: The story style changes a lot. The beginning of the show is almost episodic, while giving you glimpses of the the personalities of the main characters and their feelings towards one another. However, near the middle they take a dramatic turn towards something more plot-driven, and after that the story becomes more linear. The first half is all randomness, somewhat focusing on a threesome of highschoolers.  The Headless Rider is a mystery that's slowly being revealed and she's the most supernatural thing in the show. Then a mysterious killer called Saika appears and the leader of the... See full review

Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day

Nov 28, 2011

Sorry, I can't write this without spoilers. I'm only ruining about half of the first episode, anyways. If you want the version without spoilers, here it is: AnoHana is about a group of friends who have lost touch over the years, and are brought together by a reunion with someone who knew them back when they were all close. Complex relationships, drama, and occasional cuteness to be had. Now, if you're not looking for spoilers, run why you still can!

Story: AnoHana starts off as being about a guy who believes he's hallucinating a vision of one of his close friends who died when he was around six... See full review
