Watch history unfold in this epic tale as the Shura and their ancestors witness the days of the swordfighter Musashi, fight with the one-eyed Jubei Yagyu and help influence the fall of the Shogunate and Shinsengumi; and most importantly, touch the hearts and minds of everyone they meet…

The main character in Shura no Toki is very similar to Gats, and even though Shura no Toki is not nearly as violent or grimey as Berserk, they both are about people who possess great strength but are moddest about their prowess, providing you with those anime goosebumps whenever they dominate a foe and surpise everyone on screen. That written, even though there's not as much violence in Shura no Toki, there's nearly as much action. It's also historical, and Berserk -- although wildly distorted -- is, too. I just feel like Berserk is very serious and makes you take serious gazes into yourself; Shura no Toki is a similar watching experience.

This is a rather difficult reccomendation to write, as these shows don't share much in common at all. Yet there is a reason for me to reccomend these series together, but this reason contains things that would cause major spoilers for both series. So you will have to trust me on this one, also, you may have to see the entire series of both shows to reaslise why this reccomendation works. Lastly, the first 11, more or less, episodes don't properly represent the later excellent parts of Gilgamesh.

Huge, bad ass sword - this is what these two are about. Fighting is main issue, along with hardships of friendship and politics. Moreover, both main characters share similar emotional problems.

Berserk deals with similar themes of self discovery, love and loathing as Utena. They also both feature main characters whose destiny has already been chosen for them, but who through perseverance manage to break the cycle they are in. Thematicallyu speaking, they also both owe greatly to Rose Of Versailles.

Both shows look at the homoeroticism and camaraderie between males. The bloody nature and the passion shown in both shows are also powerful forces to be reckoned with. Berserk owes a lot to the suspense it creates, and the way it does it to Saint Seiya.

One of the things I like about both animes is cruelty of main characters, they simply don't care about enemies and they don't let them live if they cross paths. Both animes share common backstory, because both main characters were best friends with antagonists in the past, and now they are fighting against them.  Antagonists have raised armies and They have only one goal - to conquer the world while main characters are still on the good side. The setting is also similar, a world like ours set in chaos. In Fist of the North Star story takes place in near future while in Berserk it is set in past. The last but not the least fact is that both protagonists, even though they seem mercilles, are accompanied by kids on their journey. Kids provide comic relief elements to the plot.

Guin Saga inspired the creation of Berserk, so they have quite a few similarities.  They both take place in an old-kingdom fantasy setting with magic, demons, and plenty of political intrigue.  The main protagonists, Guin and Guts, are strong warriors who follow their own path, searching for answers about themselves and the world around them.
