5 Centimeters per Second

5 Centimeters per Second

Although today Tono Takaki and Shinohara Akari live far apart due to a family move shortly after elementary school, they were once two shy young students brought together by their shared differences from their peers. It is because of this that the two built a bond of closeness between them that still survives through their continued correspondence, even over such a distance. Secretly they both fear the loss of this bond over time, and for this reason they arrange a meeting between just the two of them. The journeys both of them take in their minds and in their lives create an atmosphere of intense emotional upheaval, but also a sense of peace. It is a twist of fate and a series of decisions that put the two in place to carry what they choose of their pasts into the future they will create for themselves.

Two people, deep feeling between them, how simple is that? Not at all. Emotional, melancholic, heart moving, calm, delicate - that's how these two anime could be described. Plus breathtaking views (especially sky's!) in both!

cyntez cyntez says...

Even though Air is a magical story ,while 5 Centimeters per Second has the ordinary-life storyplot, they both share sad romance, amazing sightviews and deep feeling of melancholia. What makes them so touching is the idea of love as an unlimited sky beyound everything, where one can find the answers to his heart .And both the main couples are desperately trying to reach this sky and grasp the fragile happines, even if it means to wait another life...

I love how the animators focus on the whole picture especially the backdrops to try and set the mood for the viewer in both Air and 5 Centimeters per Second.  Through the melancholy and tragic times the dramatic scenes are expressed through the emotion of not only the characters but the intense and lively scenes in which they are portrayed in.  The sad yearning of two people for someone they really care about touches the hearts of everyone.  Both stories are about a happiness than can end within seconds, they have a really good message of cherish what you hold dear now because you do not know how long that happiness will really last.

YuiYui YuiYui says...

For a start both of these stories are full of romance and drama, also the development is pretty slow so this makes they pretty similar. Air's story is definitely one that is developed much more over a longer period of time and 5 Centimeters per Second is one pushed into 60 minutes but still both stories are really good and detailed. So I believe that if you liked one you should like the other.

both Air and Angel Beats are the works of Kei, both share the same feeling, similar character personalities, both were produced by the same studio. If you liked one of these two shows be sure to check the other one as well, but keep some tissues near you while you watch this shows, because without a doubt they will be pretty sad, melancholic.

FF3710Freak FF3710Freak says...

Although at first these animes seem to have nothing in common, once you've finished them both you notice all the similarities, between characters getting second chances to fulfill their lives.

And for both you'll need a box of tissues on hand for the later on episodes.

Bvision Bvision says...

This masterpiece (Angel Beats!) has all right to join the Key animation bundle being Clannad, Air & Kanon (2006). And the tear jerking magic they produce. On top of all that they added something extra this time, some comedy and action.

wolfangel87 wolfangel87 says...

The characters in Air and Angel Beats have similar characteristics.  The tones of the characters personalities to one another has the same feeling (probably because they were created by the same person).  The melancholic dramas will leave the viewer in suspense until the final scene.

Responsibility, maturity, acceptance and love; these are the main themes of both Air and AB, though in different forms. Both are about growing up, making relationships, and keeping what matters close.

crimsoneyes crimsoneyes says...

Air and Aishiteruze Baby are similar because in both, a guy must look after a little girl - though the situations are different. Air can be a little confusing but you'll understand it if you think about it a bit. Kunisaki meets the "girl in the sky" which is a story that has been passed down in his family. He then takes care of this girl and tries to save her from her fate. Kippei, on the other hand, also tries to help Yuzuyu and becomes a father-like figure for her. Both anime have amazing imagery and outstanding stories.

wolfangel87 wolfangel87 says...

Air and Aishiteruze Baby are both about people having to take responsibility for a little girl.  There are choices made that effect their whole lives and they have to deal with their individual decisions and grow up on their own, even though the situations are different in both series the development of the main male character through everything he has to go through is the same.  Both Kunisaki and Kippei (Air and AB respectively) have to go on their own journey to find themselves with the little girls being the vessel for them to do that.

Skip Skip says...

Ok this may sound a weird recommendation...

Elfen Lied is a bloody and violent anime, break no bones about it, but the power of the story about Lucy is on the same level as of that in Air. This is a sad anime, but even if you hate Lucy at the start, you'll feel sorry for her by the end.

dokurochan dokurochan says...

While they may not seem similar due to the gore in Elfen Lied, the main characters have big similarities. Lucy and Mizuzu are both lonely girls that have no friends or family who care for them. When they do make friends they always lose them. Both stories are really sad and emotional but they are excellent tales that I recommend if you liked one of these anime.

eaper eaper says...

At first this may seem like an odd combination, but, after you control for all the violence in Elfen Lied, there is a striking similarity between Lucy's melancholic story and what Misuzu, and even Kannabi no Mikoto, have to go through.

The ending of both of these create a sense of feeling that's hard to describe.  It appears that despite being two completely different series, with unique characters and compelling storylines, your thrown ever towards an outcome that you wish would never come.  It's remarkable to see the complexness of these two in this way.

Brunelli Brunelli says...

Clannad's movie and Air work with parallel universes, lots of things happen...  Different from the usual. Other developments. Should prepare your scarves.

bebe4styll bebe4styll says...

Sadness, grieve, love, magic, you choose one. These words sum up both Air and Clannad Movie. If you like heart-breaking stories these are just perfect. They both start off with a beautiful love story for which you might have high hopes and then it ends it in a lot of tears and drama. You have to be prepared with many many tissues for any of the two, for it will break your heart in two.

These series are both very unique, very well known romance/drama series based on H-games. They both have amazing OSTs and art work. Furthermore, they both have very original elements them that help made them as great as they are.

bebe4styll bebe4styll says...

These two animes are connected through the emotions they give, through the feeling of helplessness in face of inevitabilities. Air and Ef-A tale of melodies represent stories of pure-hearted people who have to suffer, to love and keep living in spite of everything. You will love the animation, the way the story goes, the similarities between characters and everything else ! They are both a must-see!

Madoka Madoka says...

I was a litte on edge about linking these two series but after rewatching them both i see they are alike in a few areas. They both of course are great for emotional impact, the selling point that is. but that alone doesn't make them similar.

The actual plots shared between the series can be alike on a few levels and though the events building the splot isn't it's still well put together. Both of course are full of emotion and loss, if you like one i think it is at least worth giving the other a try as they do have some simularity.

The magic and drama themes can be found in both series. Though while Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto focusses more on this magic, Air TV puts its accent more on the actual relations and disturbances of those. You will see some CG art in both series, though the CG art used in Air TV is much more appropriate and more beautiful.

A pleasant Shoujo that deals with life, growth, and realizing dreams. Someday's Dreamers has an art style that is peaceful and calming. Air's art style also creates a lovely world that gives the watcher a sense of "forever summer" and tranquility.

When I first watched "Haibane Renmei", it struck me how the series was able to captivate me, through sheer force of atmosphere. The story - in its weirdness - just slowly meandered along, and most of the characters weren't that powerful as personalities, yet still the world presented was so fascinating that I just had to keep watching. A while ago I watched "Air", and experienced the exact same phenomenon, thus this recommendation seemed pretty obvious to me.

Princess Tutu

Princess Tutu

Once there lived an eccentric author called Drosselmeyer who wrote grand tragedies - one of them was the tale of a prince who sealed away an evil raven by breaking his own heart into tiny pieces. However, before the story could be completed, the author died and the tale took on a life of its own. Now, in a town where fiction and reality meet, the story continues on its tragic course with Ahiru, a duck who transforms into the beautiful Princess Tutu in order to restore the prince's heart. But will Ahiru's act of love be enough to defy the story's terrible destiny and lead to a happy ending?

Air follows up on an old legend of a girl whose life is destined to end up in tragedy. Princess Tutu follows up on an old tale of a princess whose fate was a tragedy. The settings of both anime are in an unknown town where reality and magic are both alive. Although the stories are very different, there are many similarities in the structure and style of the storyline and plot. If you like Air, you'll surely enjoy watching Princess Tutu.

orangexxbumblebee orangexxbumblebee says...

Princess Tutu and Air are both tragic romances, with an air of magic about them. Misuzu and Ahiru are incredibly similar, in the fact that they remain bright and cheery in the worst circumstances. If you enjoyed the contrasting light and dark natures of one, you'll find the same in the other.
