Yeah, so that's the thing about Frieren; she's on a journey of understanding human emotions. She has lived alone for so long, it's not even a tenth of her life she has spent with humans. She only spent time with one human before ever meeting her party, and so she doesn't understand what all things humans go through.
Himmel understood this, and he never really expressed his feelings directly. He understood that she will outlive him for an unimaginable amount of time, and expressing his true feelings may lead to all sorts of troubled emotions; regret of not being able to understand him; frustration of not being able to reciprocate human emotions; unease due to the limited time humans have on this planet. She goes on walking for some fifty years because she isn't bound by the human experience of time only then to realize again that humans get old.
It wasn't a rejection from Frieren, rahter she didn't understand what love, rejection and regret meant at that moment. And when Himmel wasn't there, it hit her what regret means.
True, she doesn't understand human emotions and mostly remains neutral, but she cares to help and makes an effort. This is evident plenty of times throughout the story and flashbacks.
What I love most about this show is not only the way the passage of time is depicted, and not only the importance of having friends (who may be flawed), but also our protagonist who loves to create a field of flowers, sleeps until noon, goes on adventures with her party members to understand emotions which even humans have difficulty with; complicated themes of time, regret, care, defeat, perseverence and hard work.
I'm quite curious as to what about Frieren bothers you.
Is it her neutrality or not being able to connect with humans deeply?
Quite contrastingly, I find her to be very calming. Just watching her make efforts to get to know other people, even though she has no need to, and is perfectly fine in her own company, is appealing to me.
girl, she IS Yuki, and that girl was his girlfriend, they fell in love and so he decided to join his clan in fighting the demons although he's a demon himself, however this failed over and over for eternity. So (for some runknown eason, not spoiling) Yuki was recarnated as a guy in the current timeline.
