June 2020 fave shows

During June 2020, these were my top five favourite anime. To be clear, these were based on what I enjoyed most, whether that entailed how much I cried or the nostalgia they provided me.
1 Violet Evergarden

Violet Evergarden

Personally, many of the themes present within Violet Evergarden are extremely precious to me. I've grown up in a military family, with my parents, siblings and many relatives having served/currently in service. The way Violet Evergarden presented the notion of PTSD through 'burning' hit close to home. My father suffers from PTSD and although he is very good at handling it, I can say that I recognise the burning and scars that it left him. Furthermore, the animation and sound design in this show perfectly reinforced the intended emotion; positioning the audience to react to the more emotional scenes. Overall, I really love this show and words can't express how much it means to me.

2 Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

I think by now everyone has been discussing this show. I jumped onto the bandwagon a little late, and boy do I regret not watching it sooner! Kimetsu No Yaiba is breathtaking, the animation, the soundtrack, the voice acting, everything about this series impressed me. The stories focus on Nezuko and Tanjirou's relationship, and the importance of family was absolutely gorgeous. I forced my twin brother to watch the first season with me; honestly, it might've been the best bonding we've had for quite some time. I don't think I can accurately provide critique or feedback as I didn't watch the show to analyse it, all I can say is it brought me enjoyment.

3 Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

It's been like ten years since this series aired, but god did I enjoy it! I personally struggle to watch most horror or dark series, but the rounded pastel aesthetic of this series made it really easy to watch! I loved the dark twists, the absolute despair you see the characters experience. One of my favourite things, which I think is underrated, were the witch's dens. The madness and insanity of their designs and the symbolism found within them really heightened the watching experience. I don't have much more to say, but if you enjoy dark plot and cute animation I highly suggest Madoka Magica!

4 Lucky Star

Lucky Star

Sure, nostalgia may have influenced this pick, but despite that Lucky Star aged really well. The humour and light-heartedness of it all really make it an easy binge. Lucky Star is the type of show I watch when I feel overwhelmed by school or even during a heavier series. So, although my reasoning is short, I do recommend giving Lucky Star a watch, as it may surprise you with how enjoyable it is.

5 As Miss Beelzebub Likes It.

As Miss Beelzebub Likes It.

As Miss Beelzebub Likes was just another seasonal slice of life anime to most, but I'm trash and I absolutely loved this show. Whether it be the consistent aesthetics, the cutesy designs, or adorable character interactions, this show is a good watch for any fan of shoujo. The exploitation of popular tropes and usage of gaps was used very well and provided light comedic tones. Although this show isn't likely suited for every audience, I think those who enjoy sweeter stories will find comfort watching these.
