definitely reccomend! although it might be annoying at first, the story and plot definitely feels a lot better after a while. if you like sport mangas, you'll most likely like this one, it's a gem :) and side characters have character growth and aren't just there to make the mc shine. everyone grows and you don't really hate anyone i guess?

I should probably start out by mentioning that this manga does a lot of things right. It has distilled the most exciting parts of soccer games--namely, the scoring of goals--and found ways to manipulate the rules of how the games are played in order to maximize those moments. Like, the entirety of the second selection and the upcoming Phase Two games have the games end after a certain number of goals are scored instead of after a 90-minute time limit, which literally disallows the manga from having games end 0-1. The manga also structures things in such a way that all of the best rival characters can be retained within the primary storyline and keep competing against each other, because the tournaments are very loose and (at times) freeform. There are some pretty good characters and the artwork is really impressive and, while it can be a bit cheesy at times, the manga creates some really exciting game developments.

The dumbest part of the manga, though, is how you'll have certain people frame what's going on in certain terms and then unrelated people also use those same terms. The best example I can think of is when Ego refers to Barou as a "joker card" and then Miroku also refers to fem as "joker" (ch. 132-133). Or how everyone starts using the "Chameleon" nickname for Reo. But this type of inexplicable group mind is done literally all the time. Like, how all of the plays are presented in terms of the metaphors and lessons and stuff the manga is currently trying to push, as though the characters and the author coordinated their thought processes or something. It's also a little stupid how often players are portrayed as coming out of nowhere. Especially with the many, many characters who supposedly have good vision on the field.

Ego, the coach, pushes the players to learn their own individual weapons (their strong suits) and then find "formulas" that will allow them to increase the repeatability of their goals. Then the players learn how to create "chemical reactions" by combining their weapons/formulas with those of others. Players are also encouraged to break themselves down, "devour" others, and rebuild themselves to be stronger. After that the players learn how to "awaken," which is like arriving at an epiphany. I think it might be the same thing as entering a "flow" mental state by "immersing" themselves into a "challenge." These various mental states are portrayed visually by having eye-auras or metaphorical puzzle pieces or other things.

This series is honestly great, amazing art style and really intense - if you want to get hyped while reading a manga this will definitely get you going.

Main character just keeps getting better and better - not OP and has to work for his success and survival. This can frustrate some people, including me at times, but it just makes his success even sweeter.

Every character in this manga could be the main character, I love how deep the author went into making them individual and so entertaining to watch.

As a huge soccer/football fan, I can say this is the best football related manga out there. This shit is just too good.
