Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury

Episode 4:
So, I wish I had it in me to sit here and just make jokes about Chuchu's wild-ass poodle hair and call it a day. That sounds like fun, but...

So, between that prologue and scenes like Miorine's dad being a douchenozzle 2 episodes ago or the protests in this episode, and stuff like the depth that scene with Chuchu on SpaceTime adds to her character... I fully believe this show is going to get to what I actually want from it. Eventually...

The problem for me is that we have no idea how long that's going to take, and what we have to sit through in the meantime is starting to make me want to gouge my own eyeballs out.

I don't give a shit about Gundam school (or I guess, anti-Gundam school). I don't give a shit about teenagers dueling over arranged marriages and pride and petty teenage bullshit. I don't give a shit about a hyperbolic literally everyone proposing to Suletta and then turning around and saying "jk not really." I don't want to watch shitty space-racist teenagers be assholes to each other because they're shitty space-racist teenagers. The prologue made me want to give a shit about Suletta, but everything from the moment episode 1 started has undermined that to where I kinda don't anymore, because 90% of it is just contrived anime specialist school nonsense and petty teenage bullshit. At this point I'm ready for the school to just explode, and I'm not particularly bothered what characters we lose with it.

I can't do it anymore. Stalling. If they ever make it out of this goddamned school, I'd be interested in knowing that they do and how long I'd have to tolerate it before getting there so I can make a properly informed judgement actually knowing what to expect whether to try again or bump it to dropped.
I'm pretty much the opposite. Kinda tired with the usual Gundam war tropes so I find this light-hearted slow burn school stuff somewhat...refreshing. Of coures if this was any other anime I'd be sharing your frustrations and I do understand your frustations. The prologue set a really grim tone and promised so much cool stuff, but the main show is taking its sweet sweet time. But we'll get there eventually. I'm sure. Bandai Namco is too greedy to alienate its fans. They need to sell Gunpla after all.

Episode 4:

Holy shit! Chuchu just straight up clocked that girl! Knocked her out stone cold and immediately set her sights on her friend!

This was a good episode. I am enjoying this. Gundam School is fun, and it actually works as a pretty organic way to introduce newcomers like me to how these big robots are supposed to work. And when the conflict between the Earthians and the Spacians inevitably escalates, I'm betting that we'll see the characters being able to put the things they've learned into action.

Also, I think I'm starting to like Guel a little bit. I'm a sucker for honourable characters, and it seems to me like, although he's set his sights on becoming Miorine's groom, he really doesn't want to have to break the rules to make that happen. Puts him at odds with his father, who is clearly very unscrupulous. I'm very interested to see what his character arc shapes up to be like.

well that's unexpected with a Gundam series. but it's refreshing that it's a change of pace for a more modern twist to it. major Gundam fan so of course wouldn't pass up another attempt at space battles. not to mention it's fun seeing the older model mechs for a change, I've missed those.

Episode 5:
Yeah, okay I take back what I said last week. The school stuff is wearing its welcome now. I don't mind slow pacing. I love a good old slow burn, but it feels like nothing significant is happening. Five episodes and nothing. The only noteworthy development we got in this episode is that Elan is also revealed to be a GUND-Format user which is not really a surprise since it's been confirmed day one that he is going to pilot a Gundam. He is basically a Cyber Newtype stand-in and his number designation is even four lol. This fucker is dead as shit. Maybe there's a chance he'll survive but enhanced humans in Gundam don't get good endings.

The Pharact is pretty cool I guess. Nice to see someone from the Armored Core design team actually design a Gundam. The concept of the jammer bits is kinda cool I guess but nothing mind-blowing. I'm sure the Pharact still has more tricks up its sleeve.

We got a Gundam vs Gundam duel next week...so c'mon show, give me something here. Do something big. I don't wanna sound like a psychopath here but gimme some blood here. The good stuff. Not this low-stakes school duel shit. Gimme large-scale mobile suit battles. Gimme more world politics. More war. More death. Something.

Ep: 5
I don't really get the grievances with the slow burn story development. For once the MC isn't a child soldier sent out to fight constantly. The Pharact is cool and if every conflict is resolved with duels for the rest of the series that would be cool too. Good story writing doesn't need gratuitous violence like IBO had. Now we know her moms subordinate has appeared too, which who knows if she'll try to sabotage her or not.

I'd be honestly surprised if they actually go through with that and settle everything on school duels or something similar. But I doubt it. Something is boiling in the background. People are scheming behind doors, including Suletta's mom, and if the side story materials are any indication she wants revenge...and a revolution. The whole Spacian-Earthian capitalist dystopia deal is pointing to one thing - war. It's just it's all the sidelines so far and it's only being drip fed to us.

Ayo this is some Unicorn Gundam Newtype bullshittery. Like I have so many questions right now. Also, long time no see, Permet Jammer. I haven't seen you since Episode 0. I don't think Suletta activated it though just like in the prologue. More hints that Aerial is somewhat sentient as stated in the novel interquel.

Yeah, I thought Elan was a Four Murasame clone when he was really more of a Ple/Puru clone. Like damn. That last scene was hella dark. It seems that the Happy Birthday song has now turned into some sort of curse in this show and whoever Suletta/Eri sings it to is doomed to die. Fuck. I wonder if the next clone will inherit the memories of the previous one. I'm guessing not. It would be so messed up if Suletta had to fight several different Elan clones in this series. Like I said last week, enhanced humans or in this case enhanced clones don't get happy endings in Gundam.

Episode 6
Great, everyone got trauma to the birthday song.
Even it is quite cruel, but I hope someone realized Elan is not the same Elan anymore.
In one episode, that happy peaceful school life being thrown off the bus.
And that white young figure, will it be Ariel/died Little Suletta like people guessing?

I rewatched the episode again with a friend and...

I noticed something weird during the Prospera/Elnora and Belmeria scene. Belmeria mentions that there’s no point trying to avenge something that happened 21 years ago and she's definitely referencing the purging of Fólkvangr a.k.a Episode 0 but something doesn't add up here - Suletta/Ericht is 4 during the events of the prologue-we know this because it was her birthday-but right now she's 17. She should be in her early 20s I think. I don't wanna overthink this and the scene between Prospera and Belmeria was hella vague to start with but it’s clearly something that should be revisited.

Episode 7:
There's no action but the episode was still tense thanks to all the politics and corporate shenanigans. Everyone all got schemes and whatnot, even an affable guy like Shaddiq. Like what is up with him and Nika? Their little scene caught me off-guard.

Anyway, MioMio stonks go brrrrrr! She's the star of the episode and she gave quite the performance. Her dynamic with Mommy Char is really good and I wanna see more interaction from them. I love how Prospera sized up her future daughter-in-law.

Ep 7:
I kind of wish Suletta wasn't so easily swayed, but it also fits her character and age range. I'm waiting for Gundam Aerial to save Suletta at some point. Since you know, sentient mech and Suletta is destined to get into another messy situation. I'm not surprised by Shaddig and Nika working together. I'm pretty sure it was hinted somewhere

I really want to see who pilots the other red mech. Presumably it's Prospera. Also, she's probably the best spiritual successor to Char

Overall the writing for this series is better than IBO (so far) and at least a couple other Gundam shows. It's one of the few that competes with the UC timeline

Episode 8:
That promotion video was pure perfection. Suletta's awkward dance, the shitty editing, the goat... Just perfect. It's quite ironic Miorine is recreating the very company her dad destroyed 20 years ago using his money and clout. Wonder how will her dad react now that she dug up Cardo Nabo's old research.

Man, Shaddiq is a lot more...cunning than I thought. Looks like next week is a battle episode and Shaddiq's personal mobile suit, the CEK-040 Michaelis, will be making its grand debut.

Suit looks like a Gyan but with a bit of Kanetake Ebikawa's usual flair. Funny because its predecessor back in the prologue, the Beguir-Beu, was more of a Qubeley expy. Wonder if the Michaelis will also have remote weapons or will it be more melee-based?

The mass-produced Beguir-Pente is also mentioned... Wonder if Shaddiq's little harem would be the ones piloting those. Now that'll be a sight to see.

What the heck is this Nu Gundam beam barrier thingy?

So The Aerial's PERMET marker turns blue... Yeah, that's a fucking Psycho-frame alright.

The same blue mark Erich/Suletta had back in the prologue...

But somehow the current Suletta doesn't show any blue PERMET marks... Ayo what the fuck is going on here?

Anyhoo, the real MVP here is Chuchu and her custom Demi Trainer. Like ya gotta have stones and mad skills to go toe-to-toe against a specialized high-spec mobile suit using only a trainer unit-albeit a souped-up version-and somehow manage to last long enough and even hold it off. I mean the way Chuchu bludgeoned the Michaelis with her own sniper rifle... Like damn, that's some 08th MS Team shit right there, baby. A certified Shiro Amada moment. She better gets a massive upgrade later in the show.

Also, is this intentional? Is Chuchu's custom unit a reference to VOTOM'S Scopedog? Like I fucking hope it is because that's badass.

Anyway, solid episode but we got even more questions now.

Some really similar vibes from this fight scene to the prologue. Something about the way Suletta was acting was so unnerving. Similar to what happened in the prologue as a child. The way she was talking to the Aerial, was... different. She wasn't just speaking to an inanimate object. The way she spoke to it just like it was a real person, having a conversation with her...are they connected somehow?

Shaddiq kinda asked to himself if she was a Gundam.(at least, I think this is what he meant?) Was Suletta made to be the Aerial's pilot from the start? Like some kinda super soldier sorts? Idunno I'm just throwing shit in the air but I am so curious for answers right now.

God, I love this show.

The same blue mark Erich/Suletta had back in the prologue...
Oh great, even more fuel to the growing amount of concern for Suletta and her Death Machine

Episode 10:
Oh yeah. Looks like we're building towards to an honest-to-goodness legit mobile suit battle. An actual conflict with real stakes. And the Lfrith off-shoots finally make their appearance!

I'm digging the Ur and its beam gatling gun. Getting some Gundam Seravee vibes from it. Thorn not so much but I need to see it in action and maybe I'll warm up to it.

We also finally got to see a proper glimpse of the Earth. It feels like a half-completed "abandoning earth to nature" thing that some previous Gundam anime have had some people advocate. I wonder if something cataclysmic happened like CCA's Axis Drop or Gundam X's multiple colony drops? Or did humanity simply leave the planet to heal or rot and moved on to space?

Oh and Nika? Like Goddamn. She's actually got ties to some sort of terrorist cell or rebel group for hire. Shit. Oh and new Elan clone. Wonder if each replacement was somehow an even bigger weirdo than the previous one.

Man, episode 11 is gonna be a shitstorm. All the pieces are in place and it's time for war.
