Lord El-Melloi II's Case Files {Rail Zeppelin} Grace note

Can they stop overusing the Fate franchise? At this point it's getting more overused than Final Fantasy VII

It's probably the most milked franchise of all time in anime at this point. I mean they even had a fate cooking show.

I don't even know at this point. Unlimited Blade Works, that was animated porn and action and shit. Magical Lyrica Illysviel, that was for weebs. Second season was for degenerate weebs. That I understand. The cooking one? They couldn't remake the original again a third time and they wanted to use Original Saber and Dumbshit McName with some food thing because that's "in" right now. I only understood this is Fate because of the name, but not Rail Zeppelin. Nor why this is a mystery thing. Nor why this needs an anime. It's for the weeb females who like dudes in suits but I have never heard of these characters in it. Flat Escargot? Who the fuck is he? Some French hero bastard? Sven Glasheit? Some Swedish warrior? Did he hold off a bridge and kill 40 dudes singlehandedly only to die from a cowardly Saxon bitch floating in a barrel and stabbing him in the balls? Claus Fordedge Yggdrasilmillenia? The fuck? They're just making shit up. This is some ol' bullshit.

Episode 1

Disappointed. Wait. Why am I actually? Oh, yes, I am stupid enough and still believe Fate actually for once might deliver. Yeah, I need to grow up. This is the first step. Uhm..yeah..I've done many of these steps. Gosh. Anyway..

I have 3 big problems with this episode, which highly annoyed me:

1) I hate this particular dumb and edgy trope of "making characters smart" usage here and certainly in many animes before. The trope is basically described when a character A, trying to look as calm, slick and cool, feeds character B "shocking" info, meanwhile the reactions of character B are either voiced by the infamous "NANI?!" or are read from his visibly englarging eyeballs, rigged and full of surprise. I believe 99% of the audience doesn't get fooled by this. It doesn't mean character A is highly inteligent, though it might mean character B is stupid. I feel the latter is the truth in this case.

2) Humor. As Waver was in Fate/Zero more of an otaku, shy boy, nothing has changed and his humor feels childish, embarassing. The same applies to his friend, where apparently coughing frequently blood is supposed to be funny.

3) Waver feels to me as a lead very weak. I am not sure why someone even designed a story around him, but he ever feels to me confused. This show rather reminds more of some adventures of young Sherlock Holmes mutated with Indiana Jones and adding a weird bit of magic. I have no idea where it is going, but with characters like Waver this can't be good.

I don't think this is worth it. As much as A-1 got burned with Apocrypha, sadly it looks like it is TROYCA's turn to realize the material is not here to make a decent show. It is not feasable in my eyes. I am off. Hopefully for the last time.

Well, every individual frame looks great, but I’m not exactly impressed beyond that.

Gonna give it a couple episodes, but if the blondes from episode 0 turn out to be as prominent as they seem intended to be, I’m dropping this real quick.

Hey, Ep 2 was actually pretty good.

If they can stick to a formula of one-case-one-episode, and keep the blonde kids out as much as possible, this might be pretty nice.
Unfortunately, my money is on "no more cases, let's go for a long-ass magical conspiracy mystery with a good chunk of screen time dedicated to the blonde kids, and at least one episode entirely dedicated to their backstory".

Why would Grey worry about hiding her haircut? How many people (apart from Waver and the audience) could possibly recognize her? Also, given that she doesn't think her face is a problem, how about just going to a barber?

Studio is Troyca, prepare for mediocrity. I have no doubt this will be a below-average anime.

Pretty much the same feeling about it as episode 0. I'm mostly interested due to Fate/Zero references.

Eps. 1-3.
Ep. 1- I wasn't too sure about episode one, it kinda felt clunky to me. I wasn't really sure what to expect with this series. I watched the OVA that came out last year, and the detective theme intrigued me enough to check this out. I still haven't finished Fate/Zero, but I remember finding Waver to be immensely irritating, so his adult version, while definitely weak as a character, is much improved. I can't say I like him, but I'm used to difficult detective protagonists who are mildly unlikable, so I can deal. The other characters are either tropes or inoffensive enough. I'm really here for the English setting and the magical detective story. It's odd as an entry in the Fate franchise, but I'll take it. There's not enough detective anime. Also, I like Grey. She's so cute!

Episode 2 was much better, and I actually really enjoyed it, despite the general lack of cluing in the audience to what Waver was thinking. I'm not ok that Waver's still stuck on the last Holy Grail War, even if he did massively look up to his heroic summon. What's the deal with Waver looking so old? Unless I misunderstood, it's only been ten years since the last Holy Grail War. Even considering he's an overworked college professor/researcher who likes cigars, it doesn't really explain why he looks like a world-weary man in his 40's (and acts like it too), when he's 25 at most. I really love the opening and ending songs. They have a nice kind of mysterious and sad quality to them- fitting for a detective show in the Fateverse.

Episode 3- Mystic eyes! I've adored mystic eyes ever since Tsukihime. And we actually get to see more types! More please! I'm actually happy they didn't tie this mystery up in a single episode- 20 minutes is not enough time to do a mystery properly. I don't mind short story arcs though. So far, I'm quite enjoying this show. Yeah, the Holy Grail War is going to factor in probably big time, but, it's the magical shenanigans that I'm here for.
