I recently finished watching Yuri!!! On Ice and I loved it. I was a little bit uninterested at first but my friend really enjoyed it so she convinced me to check it out and I'm glad she did. I thought that this anime was amazing but like with every anime, it has it's flaws. But we'll start with the positives.

Animation: The animation for Yuri!!! On Ice was just beautiful! I loved it. The characters, places, outfits, everything just looked amazing. The animation fully deserved a 10 out of 10.

Sound: The music was good. I liked listening to the opening and ending songs and I enjoyed the two On Love pieces. I thought all the music worked well for each character and seemed like them. This is music that I would play over and over again. 9 out of 10.

Characters: There is only one thing I can say about the characters for Yuri!!! On Ice and that is "Memorable." Their designs were very unique and each had things about them that made them lovable. The one thing that really stood out to me is that most, if not all, of the characters went through some sort of change throughout the course of the anime. I loved it. I used to hate some characters. Then, nearing the end, I began to like them a bit more. It was great to see some change and that made the characters memorable. 9 out of 10.

Story: Now, story scored the lowest out of all of the elements for one main reason. That reason is that the basic story is someone from the bottom quickly rises to the top. There are a ton of stories like that and there'll be a ton more later on but it's a topic that is majorly over used. Now, what raised Story's score is how it's excuted. Viktor, a five time world champion figure skater, decides that he was going to help Yuuri in any way he can to get him to the Grand Prix Final. Going from there, the story develops and you learn about many characters and see them develop throughout the story. The story was really good and I truly enjoyed it. 8 out of 10.

Overview: Overall, I really enjoyed the anime. I was a little nervous and uninterested before watching this, thinking that it could have been like SAO, an anime I wasn't pleased with. But with a little encouragement from my friend, I watch it and it became one of my favorite animes. I would definitely recommend this anime to anyone.

I hope you all will at least check it out.

Hey everyone! As many of you may already know, Crunchyroll recently concluded its first ever Anime Awards! As much as I love Crunchyroll, and as much as I love the idea of the Anime Awards, I was a little...no, a lot TRIGGERED at the fact that Yuri!!! on Ice won 5 out of 14 categories...5! Not to mention that it will most likely win the Anime of the Year category as well, which has not yet been announced at the time of this review. After seeing this anime dominate the anime awards, I was shocked. To put it simply, I don't think this anime deserves ANY of the awards it won--which you can check out here >> Crunchyroll Anime Awards

Now, I am by no means a Yuri hater, but looking at the show objectively it was clear to me that it was just not as special (in my opinion) as several other anime from 2016, and hopefully after reading my review you will understand why I believe that.

Before all of you Yuri lovers downvote this review, I ask that you look at Yuri!! on Ice from a perspective you may not be comfortable with--that's right, I want you to be CRITICAL.

STORY

This anime captivated me for the first 3 episodes. As someone who has watched many sports anime (Haikyuu, Yowamushi Pedal, Kuroko's Basketball, Free, etc.) I was intrigued by the idea of a figure skating anime. At first we are introduced to our main character, Katsuki Yuri, following a devastating loss in a figure skating finals event. He is relatively old for a figure skater, and it appears his time as a competitor on the world stage is coming to an end...until he meets his long time skating idol in person. This story setup is relatively simple and cliche, but it holds so much promise--essentially placing our beloved protagonist at the bottom of the rollercoaster called life and giving him the sky to reach toward. However, even with a good story foundation, there is nothing that can save an anime from that sinister thing called BEING RUSHED. While watching the anime I couldn't help but feel that the plot was being hurried along, and that some episodes felt like they had no substance. This is where you ask, "Well BonBon, how can the anime be rushed but also lack substance?" Good question attentive reader! My answer is this: after the first few episodes, the story starts to erode. The anime became predictable for me, the character development felt forced and scheduled, and one particular romance *wink-wink people that have seen the show* sprouted for seemingly no other reason than for the sake of having one. Ultimately I stopped looking forward to new episodes every week, resigning Yuri!!! on Ice to the same pile of anime that Keijo was residing in: the "I've already invested too much time to stop now" pile.

ANIMATION

If Yuri!!! on Ice did one thing that I could not really complain about, then it was the quality of its animation. The show looks good, it's as simple as that. The art style isn't flashy, nor does it really stand out in any special way, but it was just a solidly "average" looking anime. The figure skating sequences in the show were well choreographed and looked great, and the OP and ED were nice as well. Did the OP deserve to win "Best Opening" in Crunchyroll's Anime Awards? HELL NO. I personally think that Kiznaiver's OP was many times better than Yuri's. Also, does Yuri's animation justify its winning of the "Best Animation" award? HELL NO. Once again, Kiznaiver's animation was better, along with Mob Psycho, Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, Myriad Colors Phantom World, Bungou Stray Dogs...need I go on?

SOUND

This part of the review is a little hard for me to write...you know why? IT'S BECAUSE I DON'T REMEMBER ANY OF THE MUSIC FROM THE SHOW. To be as straightforward as possible, the only reason I gave this anime a 6 out of 10 for sound is because the opening and closing songs were enjoyable to listen to. In terms of the actual anime soundtrack? It must not have been very impressive...because it didn't leave an impression on me. I am a massive stickler when it comes to the soundtracks in anime, because I firmly believe that a soundtrack can make or break any anime. Yuri!!! on Ice never made me think "Oh wow this music really improves this scene", or "this music makes me feel emotional!" I want to be able to listen to a song from an anime after the show is completed and immediately recall a scene or memory relating to the show. A proper soundtrack should allow me to relive the emotion that I felt when watching that anime for the first time, and unfortunately, Yuri's soundtrack did none of these for me.

CHARACTERS

If any part of this review will get me in trouble with fans of the show, it will be this part. To be brutally honest, I found the protagonist (Katsuki Yuri) to be extremely boring. I love some good character development, and much to my chagrin, I don't think Yuri changed for the entirety of the show! In the beginning of the show he was emotionally weak, and I understand that--he had just lost a major competition. But unlike practically every protagonist ever, he just stayed that way for the rest. of. the. show. I can hear you asking again, "well BonBon, doesn't that just mean he broke the mold of a stereotypical lead character, blossoming into a unique protagonist that faces challenges in a different manner?" Well, attentive reader, it sure does...but being unique isn't always a good thing. Yuri's dependence throughout the show on the other characters inhibited his growth in such a way that I just stopped caring about him, and subsequently began yelling at my computer telling him to "grow a pair". The other main characters were charming, with Yuri's skating idol, Viktor, being silly and aloof, and his rival being a male tsundere. Ironically enough, Yuri's rival underwent substantially more character development then he did--I'M LOOKING AT YOU YURI PLISETSKY (yes, the Yuri's rival is also named Yuri). Overall, I found practically every other character in the show to be more interesting than Katsuki Yuri, which is frustrating because, you know...HE WON THE "BEST BOY" ANIME AWARD.

OVERALL

Despite the rather salty nature of this review, this show is definitely worth a watch. Some people enjoyed it much more than I did, and that is great! But from my perspective, this show was vastly overrated in almost every aspect. The story was rushed and shallow; the animation was good but not great; the sound was acceptable but uninteresting aside from the OP and ED; all of the characters except for the main character were...average. I just couldn't help but feel like the show was a lost opportunity, and that is why I gave it a 6 out of 10 overall.

Thank you for reading my review A-P'ers! Keep enjoying your anime/manga and have a nice day/night! ^_^

The most over rated anime ever. Simply because of the pathetic and unbearable characters and story. Animation and sound are quite good but nothing more :/ I've never wasted that much of my time.
