Here we have girls defending the common man with unusual mecha. While the characters in Mao-chan are considerably younger than the ones in Sakura Wars, there's still some cute interplay between them. Good to watch if you don't really care for men in your mecha.
Melty Lancer is a futuristic tale of terrorists and genetic manipulation. After being disbanded 5 years ago, the 6 women who make up the special forces team called Melty Lancer have been reinstated -- being led, this time, by a suspicious character. The crew of Melty Lancer must race against the clock to solve the mystery behind Iyenesco, and in turn, to save the world.

Not only are both of these series from-game-to-anime, but both focus on unique technologies (as well as a group of women who need to save the day!). I preferred the animation greatly in Melty Lancer, as it is much brighter and more vivid. In addition, ML was a bit easier to understand without having played the games.

Sakura Wars and Galaxy Fraulein Yuna are both based on a video game.. but the recommendation goes further than that. You should get an almost identical feel for watching both of these -- girls kicking ass to save the world. Both also seem to have some of the same flaws, like rushed endings and not a lot of character development.
Somewhere, some time, deep in the recess of the galaxy, a robotic trio of sisters are shunned by their creators, and left to rot in a supernova. After somehow managing to escape, the cybernetic beauties have one thing in mind -- vengeance. Looks like Earth is in for some trouble -- that is, until it's favorite protectors arrive to save the day! Join Yuna, Polylina, and the rest of the gang as they fight for justice in the name of the galaxy.

Wacky, random girls who save the world? Sakura Wars OVA I and Galaxy Fraulein Yuna Returns are a good match. Not to mention, both have a similar kind of zany humor that is good for a quick laugh.
At the St. Ignacio School for Girls, there are two prestigious groups: the Debutante Club, led by the beautiful and evil Sayaka, and the not-so-popular Etiquitte Club, its sole rival. Shihoko Sakaki, Saori Tachibana, and Kanami Ezaki are three freshman who join the Etiquette Club, not knowing that it is a cover for an elite fighting squad known as the Exstars! While piloting the mecha Battle Skippers, they fight crime, justice, and Makuhari Heavy Industries (run by a relative of Sayaka) to keep the world safe. Watch out, bad guys! The Exstars are on the prowl!

Sakura Wars and Battle Skipper School both have a similar feel and tone related to the usual group of girls battling evil. Not a lot of comedy in BSS (as opposed to Sakura Wars), but I really think if you liked one, you'd like the other.

These shows go well together. One has a group of guys, one is a group of girls who pilot mechas to help save humanity. Each character has a very different personality and has a different backgroud.

Gonzo does it again with this action-packed mecha comedy. She's an ordinary high school girl. He's a counterterror agent assigned to protect her from those who would steal the information locked in her mind. OK, so she's not so normal after all. Armored Slave battles and lovers' spats abound as Sousuke and his comrades try to track down the mysterious Gauln before it's too late.
Full Metal Panic! has the same combination of romantic comedy and mech action as Sakura Wars does, but it fleshes out the plot and characters much, much more. If you liked the idea behind Sakura Wars but wanted to get a little more meat in the story, check out FMP!
