story: the manga was a (very) light novel, so theres not much depth to it

although it was a fun watch, juuni taisen isn't really something you'd pay attention to for a long time. it's simply a quick and easy story that you can make theories of or just appreciate it while its there.

compared to the manga, its okay. -- the manga has a lot more detail with the game and the characters ans it tends to string things out for longer.

The basic message in this story is just that fighting is terrible. The story is really fast-paced, and I wish the series was longer to develop the relationships between them and I guess how the whole 'Juuni Taisen' started.

animation: it was pretty good, although some scenes were a bit 'meh'

I like how with each fight, most characters had their own special moves and skills that they used to their advantage. the animation was fairly decent, but with some fight scenes you could really tell which parts were animated from 3d models, and in most scenes the hair kind of just 'floated' behind the characters and it didn't really move with the rest of them.

sound: it was actually pretty good

the voice actors that they chose were pretty good, you can tell that the voices are a good match for each character, especially Boar, Rat and Chicken.

characters: very unique, nice designs!

i'll be honest, one of the only reasons i read and watched juuni taisen was for the characters. each has their own backstory, and its revealed pretty often in the show (save for rabbit and ox)

Each character is somehow linked to their Zodiac, whether it be their designs, personalities, or even their looks, which is a nice touch to the show.

Overall, its a cool show, but It's not worth getting completely invested.

The shape of the world map is decided by a battle tournament every 12 years, between the 12 houses (chinese zodiac) and the shadowy figures betting territories on the winner.

Thoughts

A nice little battle royale anime, the first 6 episodes that is, Oh and episode 12 was also nice, except for the wish.

The animation becomes significantly worse after the 6th episode and the pacing goes out the window (becomes slow, and goes all over the place) additionally you get the feeling like you are watching an entirely different show altogether.

The systems of the story make no sense, the show is supposedly based on real world yet:

  • Some people have powers, others don't but it's never explained why or how
  • The people belonging to the 12 houses have animal parts (ox horns, dog teeth etc.)
  • The sheep man had sheep horns long before he joined the sheep family
  • Necromancy exists, everybody important knows of it but how it works is never explained
  • The best warriors in a world with guns, are using melee weapons and not just in the tournament but even before it -_-

Episode 9: Hello CG. Episode 10: Goodbye CG.

Every twelve years, Twelve warriors carrying the names of the twelve Chinese zodiac signs are brought together to fight a death match with the last man standing receives a reality altering wish, and they have only twelve hours time limit. the show is simply a schlock action gorefest, rejoice, THIS IS EDGY TRASH IT IT'S FINEST, or at least it was supposed to be, since the premise turned out to be a troll. EVERYBODY CLAP YOUR HAND!

Personally, this is my first encounter with a NisioIsin work, the so called master of meta writing, and the show is supposed to be playing on the idea of a Battle Royale being inherently flawed or at least believe it's meant to be. but instead of actually doing something with this idea, he just went for including every negative aspect in them while pretending they're the opposite of what they seem to be.

The show presents the idea by not having a central character of which we follow the story through his eyes, while still making it obvious who's gonna win anyway making the lack of main character pointless. it also makes sure that teh order of which the characters die is spoiled in the ending theme, while giving the characters who are about to die a flashback which reveals their backstory right before they die, all of that while being subjected to their meaningless internal dialogue.

The idea sounds cool on paper, but there are two main problem with it, firstly it's poking at an idea that was NEVER meant to be well written or meaningful, it's schlock made to be entertaining, people watch it for a bunch of completely flat characters slaughtering each other violently, it's watched for the spectacle only, not the story or the character. the other main problem is that it's BORING, there isn't any reason to watch a show that tells you from the very beginning how everything will play out, the audience it hooked at the first are those who were looking for entertaining edgy garbage, not this crap.

Further more, The show also tries to prove it's point by being nothing more than an embodiment of everything wrong in it's genre, instead of subverting them, while NOT having any of it's redeeming qualities, so it doesn't really doing much, it's just being shit on purpose, which beats the point of being self aware of it's flaws, it's just embracing the very thing it's poking fun of.

You might say the show was never meant to be about the fighting, or even a self aware take on the battle royale genre, but rather about the fighters themselves, why did they join this battle royale, and what's their purpose. but that doesn't work, the characters are flat archetypes with not much personality traits to define them besides the Zodiac they represent or their special ability. not to mention there is no reason to give a shit about character or his backdrop of you know that he will die anyway within a few minutes, especially if the viewer was one of the people who were trolled by the premise.

Watching this felt as if the it's mocking me, and it's not something that I'd appreciate, in case you're wondering whether you should watch the show or not, don't, since i just told you everything that needs to be known about the story, and the concept alone is not worth sitting through four hours of boredom anyway.

Temática battle royale que me ha sorprendido muchísimo dándonos un argumento interesante, rápido y entretenido, con personajes bien marcados.

La historia tiene buenos giros, con un final rico que me ha sorprendido.
