Mushishi

Mushishi

It isn't unusual for a person to feel that the world around them is strange and has unexpected secrets lying just beyond their sight. However, for most people this is just an occasional sensation that greets them upon awakening or chases them into sleep. For the mushi researcher Ginko, it isn't a feeling at all; it is a knowledge which guides his travels and motivates his life. Found in the cracks between what is conceivable and what is not, are the varied life forms collectively known as mushi. They surround us and affect us, but their intensely different nature makes them unrecognizable to most. Ginko brings these life forms into perspective for the lives of those most affected and most in need of an explanation.

Both series have a historical Asian backdrop and feature a traveling healer who deals with supernatural cases. If you like one series, I highly recommend trying the other.

Both series have the main protagonist as a traveleing healer that handles supernatural cases. The major difference is with the attitudes of the MCs - Ginko from Mushi-shi is more caring, laid-back, and wants both the Mushi-shi and the people that are affected by them live coherently in peace. Meanwhile Tao Yao is lazy, ego-centric, and only cares about her own well-being and how much money she can make during her travels. Both series follow an episodic format, though the Fairies Albums stories cover 2 episodes per story arc.

Both Bai Yao Pu and Natsume Yuujinchou follow MCs who interact with spirits and help them out. The major point being a book of spirits, called Fairies Album/Hundred Demon Spectrum and Yuujinchou/Book of Friends respectively.

On both anime the MC and their friends help fantasy beasts / monsters / youkai. They are episodic so each episode may or may not will be different from the previous one. Also, sometimes it s has a little of mystery on some episodes for a little extra sauce.

Both of these animes seem similiar to me plot wise. They both show stories of many different people and they also have a bit of the same feel.

Both are journery or adventure centered, characters are all well written. While both tells stories along the journey Fairies album delves into it much deeper. Both of them have incredible art, and character depth.

The Apothecary Diaries

In the East is a land ruled by an emperor, whose consorts and serving women live in a sprawling complex known as the hougong, the rear palace. Maomao, an unassuming girl raised in an unassuming town by her apothecary father, never imagined the rear palace would have anything to do with her—until she was kidnapped and sold into service there.

Both female protagonist utilize their capabilities for some sort of healing. Both characters have great parallels and similarities not only in their indifference in  attitude but also in their moments of "soft-heartedness". Both of them are realistically written to react like how we would react if we are in their shoes; it's kind of refreshing to see the indifference as ironic as it may sound, as it ticks the right places in my mind as the plot doesn't revolve around the main character, as both clearly show that there are lives beyond theirs.

You would really enjoy both when you want a change of pace where the main character has no "I'll change the world with my capabilities because the plot works around me" kind of mindset.
