Both series feature a strange, spooky, and unpopular girl who sits alone, until one boy seems something special in her and initiates contact. In both series the pair find themselves in a close relationship, in which they have doubts & uncertainties about their feelings, their partner's feelings, and the overall status of the relationship.

However, two students, Yuusuke and Shin, take an interest in her; Yuusuke tries to help Maria change her way of speaking so she can make friends easier, while Shin tries to help her subtly in his own way. I highly recommend these two for readers who have liked either Kimi ni Todoke or Akuma to Love Song.

Both KnT and AtLS feature female protagonists that have the same problems/difficulty with communicating their feelings, causing them to be misunderstood and to become misfits in class.  Although the personalities of the two are different (Sawako is gentle and shy whilst Maria is blunt and honest), they both experience the same outcast feeling caused by their classmates.

If you liked either, you should give the other a go.  You won't be disappointed.

When at home, Yukino is spoiled, slovenly, stubborn, and spends every spare minute studying to keep her place at the top; so when she's knocked from the top by Soichiro Arima, she vows to destroy him. One day Soichiro tells Yukino he likes her, but she quickly turns him down since him falling for her means she's ‘won.' Soon after, Soichiro discovers that Yukino's prim and proper attitude is a facade and blackmails her into doing some of his school work. Yukino gets fed up with the situation and stands up to Soichiro, causing him to apologize and re-declare his true love for her after learning what Yukino is really like. Yukino has also fallen for the real Soichiro after his confession of also having to play the role of the perfect student. Together they decide to stop pretending and learn how to be themselves.

While the combination may seem a bit like a mismatch at first (Kare kano - Cheerful girl + gloomy guy, Kimitodo - Gloomy girl + cheerful guy ) both stories have actually a lot in common. They focus on characters wishing to change themselves. Whether the starting point is "Sadako-like girl" or is it "perfect student", the goal in both cases is "normal girl". In order to do that heroines need to change their habits, become more honest, open, and manage to change how they are perceived by their classmates. Also in both mangas the boy is the catalyst of the change.

They both are shoujo with a nice balance of comedy and heartwarming (though Kare Kano go for drama in latter volumes).

Both mangas feature a gloomy girl, completely lacking self-confidence. She is honest and hardworking, but find it hard to open up to others. Thanks to cheering she got from a very active and cheerful boy, she starts to change herself. Both titles are very cute and heartwarming stories about young girl slowly building her confidence and finding friends. If you like one you should give other a try.

One of the other series I first thought of when reading Kimi ni Todoke was We Were There.  The relationship between the two main character have the same types of conflicts and real life issues that have to be overcome to make relationships work.  The naivity set forth by both of the main characters is accuratly portrayed, while the suspense of the series keeps the readers on the edge of their seats.

Peach Girl

Peach Girl

With a noticeable tan and bleached hair, Momo Adachi is a high school student who is frequently misunderstood by her classmates. She's accused of being a playgirl and is the subject of many rumors, most of which originate from her ‘best friend' Sae who is jealous of Momo due to them having a crush on the same boy. Momo's life only gets worse when Kairi Okayasu, who she once saved from drowning, decides to make her his own. Kairi coming into Momo's life only encourages Sae to spread more rumors about Momo and Kairi while going after Toji herself, creating quite a complicated situation for everyone involved.

The first thing I thought when I started reading Kimi ni Todoke was Peach Girl!  Not for the love triangle aspect in Peach Girl but for the misguided misunderstandings of the people around them.  Something so small can be taken way out of proportion if people cannot communicate with each other clearly.  That is exactly what happens in both of these series and in real life as well.  Both series have very good lessons about trying to get along with each other and not jumping to conclusions.

Kimi ni Todoke and Suki Desu are two of the better shoujo 'I just need to confess!' manga out there. While unarguably typical shoujo, both will bring you back to high school days when you wanted more than anything to find requited love.

The characters are so similar in Special A and Kimi ni Todoke.  The romance feeling concerning the main characters in each series builds and builds until the very end of the series and keeps people waiting in anticipation until the end.
