Tokyo Revengers

Jul 7, 2022

Tokyo Revengers was quite an entertaining watch. Overall, I enjoyed it and I would recommend the series to others. Unfortunately, that is not to say that the show is perfect--far from it.

In my humble opinion, the main weaknesses of the show were how slowly the plot progressed at times + the utter stupidity and lack of logic that the mc exhibited.

The mc, Takemichi, had good intentions so I can't hate him, but an overbearing amount of his actions were just too dumb for me to brush off.

This is also a good time for the famous saying, "actions speak louder than words." In all the time Takemichi wasted yelling about what he was going to do, he could have already gotten a step closer to actually doing it instead of blabbering away. Some examples of the stupid shit Takemichi did: [SPOILERS AHEAD]

  • He knew the exact date that Draken was supposed to die. When you know someone's supposed to freakin die on a certain day, logically, you wouldn't relax until you were 100% sure that the danger passed and they were safe, but no, Takemichi took the day to freaking relax at a festival assuming the danger had passed. This is a continuous mistake that Takemichi makes over and over and over again: he constantly underestimates the enemy. You have more of a chance to win by overestimating your enemy, then you will be ready for anything, but underestimate them and you're done.
  • Draken laying on the ground with a near-fatal stab wound and Takemichi just screams "DRAKEN-KUN DRAKEN-KUN DRAKEN-KUN" over and over, instead of calling an ambulance. Yes, because standing there doing nothing but scream will somehow save him from death. Emma and Hina were the only ones smart enough to call an ambulance lmao
  • Next, he knew when Baji was supposed to die. And what did he do? He didn't keep his guard up. Baji still got stabbed... while Takemichi was busy holding him in place in an embrace instead of keeping his guard up and watching for attackers. *pulls hair out*
  • He couldn't prevent Baji's death despite knowing when it would happen, okay, but you would think he could prevent Mikey from beating the shit outta Kazutora then? Wrong. For a painfully long amount of time, Takemichi just watches as Mikey almost beats Kazutora to death. Then, at the last moment, he steps in when he could have done so in the beginning. It's like Takemichi's brain has a processing speed that is 10x slower than the average person's. And in the modern world, the average human being is dumb af, so that especially says something.
  • In the last episode, this was it for me: the enemy... the enemy Takemichi has been aware of since almost the beginning... poured them drinks. And what did Takemichi do? He drank the damn thing without question as soon as he heard some pretty lies from Kisaki. *throws table*

I have more examples, but I think you get the point. I enjoyed the show, but these aspects were extremely painful to watch. Hopefully Takemichi will redeem himself in the second season. I am looking forward to it!

*7/10 given for "Characters" due to the side characters that I loved; gotta admit that the side/secondary characters in Tokyo Revenegers were great
