Twilight – The Anime

When I refer to this as Twilight: The Anime, I don’t mean it literally. While this is a supernatural story, there is thankfully no love triangle between the heroine and a vampire and werewolf. There is, however, a shody plot that incorporates every supernatural story cliché and fan fiction trope imaginal. It’s as if all the delusions that Rikka Takanashi in Chuunibyou or Zaimokuza in MTRC SNAFU spout, you know, the parts that are meant to be the comic relief, were made into the plot to a serious anime. And much like Twilight, it is unjustifiably popular.

Chise is a Mary Sue (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Sue) version of Natsume Takashi, which is too bad because there is initially a lot of possibility with the Chise character. Ellias is the far too seriously written Nyanko-sensei. I’d like to give you examples to support my position, but they would be spoilers and I don't believe in putting spoilers in reviews. And this show, while ultimately a waste of time, does have some merits.

The animation is very well done. While the characters might be two dimensional (both literally and figuratively) the character designs themself are good. The sound is good even if the music is a little maudlin for my taste. And there are several funny unintentional comedy moments, mostly stemming from the lack of understanding of Western names and customs by the Japanese creators. I don’t understand setting a story in England unless you were very familiar with English names, places, and cultural norms. But it is good for the occasional laugh.

2/10 story
9/10 animation
9/10 sound
0.1/10 characters
4/10 overall

I have left a number of comments on other reviews similar to this one, and as I appreciate your review, sir, I will do the same here. I just don't understand how so many people are still raving about how good this anime is and I appreciate people who validate my feeling of " are you seriously liking this crap"

Actually, when the series first began I totally understood the hype. In fact I joined in. I really did love all the characters, the story. Even the fact that it was set in England when the creative team might not know a lot about the country didn't bother me. I liked the approach. But boy did it go downhill fast. Chise turned, like you said, into a Mary sue. Elias turned into an almost literal child, and while I will follow your example of not saying any spoilers, I'm sure that like me you have at least seen parts of the last episode and where it goes and just....no....no.

Thank you sir for making me feel a little more sane for my dissapointment with this thing everybody is calling the best new manga/ anime series.
