These anime are heavily or loosely influenced by Lewis Carroll's 1865 publication Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, or its sequel Through the Looking-Glass. They range between true adaptations, alternate versions, parodies, or stories that take place in a new setting that heavily mimics or alludes to Alice's journey.

Characters with amnesia have partial or full memory loss. These anime feature characters that suffer from amnesia due to an injury or trauma, an Illness, or a Supernatural occurrence.

These anime feature animal protagonists, be they household pets, dinosaurs or other real-world animals. The characters can appear in normal, anthropomorphic or occasionally fantastical forms, for example, the animals in Dogtato-kun are food-based representations of normal animals. Mythical creatures such as unicorns or centaurs are not included in this categorization.

In these anime, an apocalypse has just occurred, threatening the world with extinction. Mankind might be under attack from Zombies, Insects, or Monsters. Or, the apocalypse may have been triggered by a Pandemic, a Natural Disaster, or another cause. Unlike Post-apocalyptic anime where society struggles to rebuild, characters in these anime focus on Survival, or on understanding and containing the disaster.

Assassins specialize in killing targeted individuals. These anime showcase assassins in training or on the job, whether they're a part of an organized group or work as freelancers.

These anime are based on an Otome Game: a story-based game targeted at a female audience. Otome Games are usually visual novels or dating sims, but also can be video games.

BL (short for Boys' Love) is a genre that depicts homosexual relationships between men. BL is the predominant term in Japan. In the West, the term Shounen-ai categorizes romantic stories that focus on emotional aspects of relationships, while Yaoi categorizes more of the sexual aspects such as Smut or explicit content.

Butlers live to serve. They make tea, set tables, greet guests and make sure the house is in order - not to mention, they execute their masters' requests. These anime showcase butlers, and often the Master-Servant Relationships that occur.

Cats are the focus of these anime, whether they're domesticated, lions, or any other type of feline! Common themes in these anime include pet care, or the daily life of a cat from the cat's perspective.

Characters in these anime have gained a way to cheat the system through fantastical means, whether the cheat breaks the rules of a game world, the real world, or an isekai fantasy world. Examples include: a game-based levelling system that appears to only them in the real world; finding or being given a game-breaking item; or acquiring an ability to level up faster than usual, or to instantly access new skills. Special, overpowered abilities aren’t considered cheats if they are game-sanctioned - for those anime, see Overpowered Main Characters.

Dark fantasy is a subgenre of Fantasy that incorporates grittier and more mature themes. These anime often contain elements of Horror, Graphic Sex, or Explicit Violence.

Characters in these anime have a need and there's only one person who can fulfill it, for a price. The "devil" might be a merchant in a Mysterious Shop, a demon or evil being from the underworld, or any number of other individuals who offer a Faustian bargain.

These anime feature Fujoshi (腐女子). Translated as "rotten girl", the term describes women who are obsessed with men in homosexual relationships. Their preferred fiction is anything to do with Yaoi or Boys' Love (BL).

These anime contain elements commonly found in RPGs, dating sims, or other video games. Level systems, experience points, and pop-up windows showing the characters' skills, status, or relationship meters are common examples of this. The characters might focus on completing tasks and side quests to gain experience or to level up, or they might focus on defeating a main boss. The story could also possess other game-like qualities, such as working in conjunction with a System Administrator.

Horror anime create an atmosphere of unease. Like Mystery anime, they encourage viewers to learn more about their world... but there may be secrets that are better left unexplored. Through eerie music and sounds, visceral or disturbing imagery, or startling moments, works of Horror make you worry about what gruesome thing is coming next.

Isekai is a fantasy genre where a person from Earth is transported to, reborn, or trapped in a parallel universe or fantasy world. For beings from other worlds visiting Earth, see Reverse Isekai.

Iyashikei (癒し系) is a sub-genre of Slice of Life anime that is designed to have a "healing" effect on the viewer. Iyashikei anime are typically Episodic, have little to no conflict, and showcase the characters' peaceful lives. These titles often take place in the peaceful Countryside, but can occur in a variety of other locations such as a home, workplace, or school. Common features include mellow atmospheres, soothing soundtracks, and gorgeous background art.

Japanese mythology refers to any number of stories involving kami (deities or spirits), oni (ogres), and/or youkai (fey-like creatures). Anime commonly include ideas based on the creation myth, featuring Amaterasu, Susano-o, Izanagi and Izanami; tales of incredible beasts such as the serpentine Orochimaru; or stories of mortal deities or folk heroes like Momotarou.

Josei (女性), translated as "woman", is a demographic aimed at women from late teens through adulthood. These titles tend to be more mature, often focusing on realistic situations such as work life or romance. Josei is the counterpart of Seinen, a demographic aimed at older teens and men.

These anime take place in a setting thematically similar to Europe in the middle ages. Castles, moats and small villages adorn the landscape, and knights, military forces and feudal kingdoms rule the populace.

These anime feature characters who live with a mental health condition that impacts their way of life, such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, or a personality disorder. For physical ailments, see Illness.

These anime are about an MMORPG: a massively multiplayer online role-playing game. The setting might take place inside of the game if it's a virtual reality, or the story might focus on the MMORPG's existence and use instead.

Young people who don't have jobs or aren't enrolled in school are classified as NEETs: Not in Education, Employment, or Training. These anime feature main characters that are NEETs, or focus on the phenomenon.
