DearS

Oct 27, 2009

This is a review based on only the first episode of DearS, after which it was dropped.

There you go, I just saved you from 22 minutes of shit, or motivated you to watch it just for the sake of raging. In both cases: Yes, this screenshot gives off the feeling the entire first episode had, pretty much.

After reading two beautiful rants about it, I just had to see what it was all about, and it was worth it. What a wonderful spectrum of terribleness!

This anime wastes no time being good and starts the episode off with a slideshow of low-quality scenery shots (in the mist) and ends this scene with a space-capsule crashing into earth. At this point, you might still hold some hopes of this becoming something only slightly below average.

Not to worry though! The OP kicks in at this point, completely obliterating any illusions of quality still left, with the DearS singing "I'm your slave" in between the rest of the, already clichetastic, lyrics sung with an annoying voice.

The first half of this episode almost seems to have the sole purpose of letting all of your moralfagtistic alarm-bells ring. It seems to be the accepted norm to see DearS as sex-slaves in the alternate universe this anime takes place in. Now of course, our hero of the story opposes the lust-trend towards the DearS. Because it's wrong? NO! Because in his mind, DearS are apparently face-eating alienmonsters in the disguise of "cute" girls, secretly planning to wipe mankind from this planet. I say "cute", because in no way you look at them, they actually are. The epitome of sex-appeal in the eyes of the animators seems to be girls with huge bug-eyes, noses proportioned completely wrong (almost disappearing into a tiny dot), and mouths barely small enough to eat bread-crumbs with.

While the first half of this episode just tries to smash your sense of morality to bits, the second half was bad in the opposite way on the terrible-spectrum: It was boring. At one point I was just staring at the side of my screen, only to realize I just missed an entire conversation between our hero and his childhood friend, never a good sign.

All in all, watching this first episode gave me the full motivation to write this little rant, and I feel relieved. I suggest this (first episode) to anyone who wants to rage for a while, it's EXCELLENT at doing just that!

3/10 story
3/10 animation
1/10 sound

Loved the review! But now I'm curious enough to watch this shit, and that's never good.

I'll definitely give this a try to rage my heart out whenever I need it. Definitely not now because I'm going to be kinda depressed once I finish Nodame Finale (it was such a splendid show), so watching something as bad as this might enhance said depression.

Thanks for the rant! It was a fun read.

@trm989 - because I did, rite?

I agree with Doommuks. It's silly to judge an entire seasons worth based off of "one" episode.
