Golden Time

Yuyuko Takemiya's Golden Time Is A Rollercoaster Drama Rom-Com.

Golden Time
is a pretty good romance drama if you're able to look past some of it's weak story elements but at the same time, do expect your emotions to go on a bit of a rollercoaster ride. Golden Time has a unusual love story that deals with a toxic relationship, mental issues and identity crisis?. At it's best GT makes you feel like you're watching one of the best Rom-com Anime ever and sometimes you feel like you're watching a melodrama that is being dragged out a little too long. The show follows a young man and his first year at a private law school, meeting new friends and even finding love but things don't seem to be so straight forward as our main character suffers from amnesia and having to deal with old memories and friends.

Golden Time might have one of the worst main characters i've come across in a while and that being Banri Tada, who is a laid back, dependable but predictable teenage boy. At first we don't think much of him but the more we look into his character the worst it gets, he's melodramatic and has a miserable backstory with the writing really hurting his character. His co-star and lead female Kouko Kaga isn't as bad, she is a rich, self-centered girl who comes off cheery, bitchy and clingy but under that mask she suffers from mental issues, rejection and insecurities. Both are unbearable at times and it honestly feels forced but they also deliver some of the most mature heart warming scenes in the show, both are supported by a fun but underutilized supporting cast that are zappy, charming and funny, which is a bummer we didnt get to see much more of them.

The animation by Studio J.C. Staff was okay, nothing spectacular with the exception of a few visually nice scenes not to mention the many outfits for Kouko which was impressive and cute, this could be credited to the art style. The soundtrack is pretty awesome, the piano pieces are nice like 悲観 (Hikan) to the jazzy 分かっていても (Wakatteite) and my personal fav 恋がしたい (Koi ga Shitai). Overall a good job by the sound team along with the voice acting; Golden Time is not bad and is actually a good romance drama that is maybe stretched out a little long with 24 episodes and a little tainted by its sappy main character but it still manages to be a good drama rom-com.

+ Good Story.

+ Great Soundtrack.

- Annoying Main Character
